It might be too subtle a distinction for some viewers to pick up on but I wonder if the simplest solution would be to use lower and upper case ie. "hero" and "Hero".

This is a really cute and wholesome show, with the underlying element of the seriousness of the Demon Lord story, Ruti, Gideon's party, and the nature of the Blessings, but at its heart it's about Red and Rit's life together.

I love how Rit is a post-tsundere being super aggressive and direct with her feelings. At this rate we'll probably get a confession in the next two episodes at the rate she's speed-running her and Red's romance arc.

"Post-Tsundere" is a great description for why I actually like Rit. Because its so very rare in anime- at least in my experience- and their history means I don't feel like we've skipped the relationship growing to that point. We've just jumped to a much more direct and open point in the development.

I like it, it's cute and you get to see how Red slowly falls for Rit which it's actually quite rare in Anime.

Normally, you see characters falling in love with "Land marks" like one character getting jealous, then, getting red checks, then panicking when he is around and so on.

Here it's blink-and-you-will miss little things that tell you he is falling for her.

I love the light novels, I love the manga, and now I'm loving the anime too.

I'm really looking forward to when they show Tisse interacting with Ruti, it becomes such a great relationship but Tisse is just so adorable at the beginning. They couldn't have done a better job with her voice.

And speaking of voices, 110% what the review says of Rit.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this series going in, but so far it has been the most pleasant surprise of the season for me, and one that is creeping up my priority viewing list for the season. The way the foundation for Red and Rit's relationship is established, and the way that it is building, has been an unexpected delight. Like Richard, I also find the extra effort being put into how Blessings impact the individuals who receive them to be quite interesting. This is practically a throwaway element in most series, one which is used simply to separate haves from have-nots, but this story is showing a more nuanced take on the concept.

As someone who is generally sick of "why doesn't the world acknowledge how awesome I am?" stories, I was pretty disappointed to see Ares being cast as a villain (or who maybe didn't know what he was doing when he chased Red out). Would it be too much to ask a show to place some limitations on a main character's necessity, especially in a show that involves retiring to the countryside? Couldn't there be one story out there about a protagonist finding his way forward in a new life when he discovers he's not the chosen one?

Maybe their efforts to bring him back will be super-interesting, I don't know. But it was a disappointing twist to me.

As a longtime player of JRPGs, I am well acquainted with the “not a true companion trope.” In countless games, you get a character who joins the party for a limited time and then stays behind to do their own thing (or dies) while the main party continues their world-spanning adventure. It's an interesting idea to center a story around one of these characters.

I got the video game connection but thought Red is a "crutch" character you get early in the game, the one who starts strong and capable at the start but one you leave behind because his lack of focus and poor levelling stats eventually leaves his character in the dust. What this describes is "a hero of another story" trope

I like the general idea but this series made two errors: They made his sister the Hero so there are stronger ties in the group than just fighting evil and the fact it wasn't a group decision. Instead of having the Hero's Party come crawling back to Red, they're generally confused as to why he left. Except for Ares who's...

One path leaves open the possibility of the Hero rejoining Red's story and eliminating the slice of life plot... which is the only unique thing here... while the story these people choose guarantees the story will eventually get back to rote roteness of RPG games.

That's my main worries going forward, I would have much rather if kicking Red out of the party was decidedly the right move and the party was a bit sad by him leaving but all understood that it was the best decision. His decision to leave without even telling them also feel very emo-ish "everyone will miss me when I'm gone".

My cynical nickname for the show I thought of while waiting for episode 3 was "The romance of the boob window". 2 Minutes into episode 3 I got quite a chuckle over the waking up from bed sequence.

In all seriousness it is a very pleasant series so far with some underlying cruelty that makes it feel more grounded then your normal generic fair. Whether it will commit to that we will see. I personally doubt this will be a returning hero kind of show. Its cultivated too much of a slow life vibe to change over to shonen action outside of its moments with the hero.

I am just wondering right now if the Richards theories on the nature of blessings driving Rit to wander will play out. It could be argued that instead of just a free wandering type she also can be a protective type. Either way I am sure that the show will focus more on life being a choice not determined solely by your blessing. Like in the chef example: On one hand it does explain that growing your blessing requires killing, but on the other it shows how much someone can do outside of your blessing.

If a world was focused solely on war then its population would quickly diminish, being unable to maintain its civilian support structures.

Every time I watch this show I am in awe at just how beautiful it looks. Everything in Zoltan is so colourful and vibrant, and you can see how much care was put into it all (Rit especially). But it's not just beautiful, it may be a laid-back setting but the fight this week was as crisp and flowing as anything you'd expect. Fantastic stuff.

I mentioned this in the preview guide, but if anyone is curious about Rit's admittedly unusually shaped blades it is not something they just made up, it is an actual weapon called a shotel.

If I am remembering the novels right the killing doesn't necessarily mean murder. Some people will hire adventurers to hunt monsters, and their blessing grows by them giving the final blow after the monster is weakened enough. Typically this would be on something smaller and less dangerous than an Owlbear though.

The episode was very.. teenager. I could understand blushing for someone you feel attracted to but he's old enough to enjoy someones company even if he has never engaged in courtship before. So it felt like we where doing a routine for some 17 year old love birds.

The episode almost reminded me of the very silly Cheat Pharmacist of last season. Because he faced a local who was being muscled out by nobles who represent harsh commercialism of modern society and solved it through an everyday chemist / herbalist shop product.

The overarching story of blessings and exile seemed to have little impact outside of perhaps shades of Rit's anger at the adventurers interrogation.

Outside of Rit's and Red's romance, the blessings are the driving force of the story.

spoiler[The stronger the blessing, the more your free will is imprisoned by it.]

I've got to start this series, cause the comments here sure are not matching the light novel. Maybe they rearranged stuff.......

Rit being a famous adventurer isn't just for show when she sees Red in danger and goes straight for the jugular. Shows how protective she is and how dangerous she can be. Nobody touches her man.

Nice to see Red helping a local business. Also, nice male fanservice!

Even Nao complained about them acting like teenagers, although I think that's more on Red's part than Rit because Rit is pretty forward and direct with what she wants. Case in point, not really being all that embarrassed at Red seeing her in a towel or seeing him practically naked.

Also, Nao is officially my 2nd favorite female character with how blunt and sassy she is, on-top of being an attractive married woman who doesn't care about barging in and seeing other guys naked.
