From what I've read, the issue with unpaid taxes appeared to be from neglect of filling out the paperwork/not hiring an accountant to help, and not from a malicious intent to keep the money. As a self-employed contractor whose US taxes are ~complicated~ I'm sympathetic. Also, I've read all back taxes were paid and I'm pretty sure it all happened a few years back, but the legal rulings just came to light recently after the situation had already been resolved.
Anyway, congrats to Minoji Kurata and family!
