Ya...if by good stuff you mean the spoiler[ rape of underage girls numerous times] than yeah, they could cut that out. How is that good stuff again?

Personally I am against a live action Kite movie without all of the graphic scenes. Those of you who have seen the director's cut on dvd may not know what I am referring to, because even that version had certain scenes edited out. As such, the actual director's cut is incomplete and without the graphic rape scene of Sawa as a minor. Yes, it is difficult to watch this scene, but as the viewer you need to understand that this scene establishes just how young she was when Akai became her guardian. Also, by including those disturbing scenes you come to understand just how depraved and perverse Akai was. He completely abused Sawa physically and psychologically without any concern to her well-being, she only served his desires. IMO without these scenes the viewer just does not grasp the exceptionally atrocious environment Sawa was forced to grow up in after Akai (and other creep) killed her parents. Furthermore, if the graphic scenes are going to be edited, why stop just at the sexual scenes? The graphic violence is equally difficult to watch and truth be told, for a live action version, it probably would be best for minors not to see it.

IMO without all of the graphic scenes in their original context, a live action version will not successful communicate the desolate conditions that Sawa lived in. The world as she knew it is debauched well beyond mere violence. Also consider another film, IMO in Perfect Blue, the rape scene was considerably more difficult to watch. Without that rape scene, the psychological effects and suspense would not have been as powerful. Lastly, you need to consider who exactly was the intended audience of Kite and Perfect Blue in Japan? I believe that particular audience is not the same, as the one who will pay to watch or own a toned down version of either.

I've seen the uncut version of Kite, and think it won't make much of a difference if they leave the rape sceens in it or not. Removing the rape sceens will most likely make the movie more enjoyable. As a girl, I was apalled by the uncut version. I like the anime and all, but those sceens were just disturbing to me. The cut version managed to send the same message to me without going into pornographic detail. Since the director's previous movies have had their share in sex scenes, I'm confident the LA movie won't have to get to far away from the content of the original cut version. This will also make it easier for the female population to see it, especially those dragged to it with their boyfriends.

Hmm... there were IMO a few scenes that were poorly cut together in the first edited version of Kite. There was a lessening of the psychological impact, and I personally would have done just a couple of things differently. I suspect that if the directors/writers are thinking about creating this movie and keeping it in context, they will use a lot of implied scenes.

I ran across (and still have) a file that was subbed, completely unedited, uncensored, and uncut... including having the extra 15 some odd seconds that isn't even in the director's cut version.

It even had the media blasters credits which tells me somebody on the inside got a DVD/print/file or whatever seperate from the release that's sold.

In the end though, I fully agree that it is necessary to make the changes. There is no way it would be appropriate to keep it that heavy in the sexual content for a U.S. based audience. Although it should be an "R" rating because of what would be implied, there are many ways of affecting an audience other than through graphic means. In fact, sometimes implication can have a greater impact than just presenting it in a raw form.

Yes, there probably should be some nudity in the film for it to work correctly. But it's not the end of the world and it's not necessary. This is not meant to be a film for people to get off on sexually. And if you do get off on this type of thing, you probably have some issues that I'd rather not know about.

I saw the TV edit (no sex scenes), and the directors cut (with sex scenes), and I could care less which I watch again, it's a good story either way, the sex scenes have no real value in the story.

I think it's pretty messed up how when it comes to sex, everybody get offended. Now I know there's a difference between sex scenes and rape scenes, but if it was normal sex scenes, people would still be getting bent out of shape about it, I believe.

Just make it real violent, and nobody will complain. Violence is better than sex anyways. Rolling Eyes

I watched both animated versions and in my view, I would rather watch the uncut version (even though the "director's cut" left out some) mainly because that's what Yasuomi Umetsu intended, and he gets all my props. Plus the uncut version had more of an effect on me (albeit a in a disturbing / "shock value" kind of way), whereas the heavily edited version was merely so-so....of course, it aint for the kiddies though......

so I would approach the live action in the same way....even though it won't be directed by Yasuomi-san, I probably would still measure its quality with the uncut animated version......

A live action version of Kite hopefully will not end up in theatres, it will probably be direct to dvd. But even if it does go to theatres, since no mentioned this, the intended viewers for Kite is not women or anyone under-aged. Kite is absolutely for mature audiences only and if you understand this, then you will understand that the intended audience (adult men), will not care for or support a considerably toned down version, PG-13 or R. If you are a woman who is offended by the graphic nature of the anime version, then please do -not- watch this anime.

Interestingly enough, I recall that my animation instructor once asked me, why make something live action when you can animate it and do so much more? You can literally push the physical boundaries of the events and characters depicted and you usually do not need to concern yourself with censorship. The animated version of Kite already exists and it contains considerably more disturbing material, all of which contributes to establishing the “world” Sawa lives in. Kite is no fairy tale, nor spoiler[ does it have a happy Hollywood ending], it was not created with such intentions, nor would the intended audience in JP want it that way. Kite presents a harsh world of brutality, betrayal, executions, and debauchery… this is hardly the stuff of fairy tale dreams. Rolling Eyes

Do you remember WHO is going to be directing it? Rob Cohen, the director of XXX, The Fast and the Furious. His movies are the movies all the teenage boys love to see, and they'll be making sure all those little teenage boys can get into the next Cohen film cause otherwise there goes their money. And then of course, there's 'Cohen has stated that he will not include "graphic adult situations", particularly of the rape found in the anime.'

I agree that a woman would probably have a problem with the un-cut version, but I love my cut version of Kite. Sawa rocks.

Oh yeah, anyone remember that No Doubt music video that was a tribute to Kite a few years back? The one that had the bathroom scene and all that? I forget the song's name...
