I'll be honest, I dropped off of You & Idol Precure around the 3rd episode.
Dipping back in to see the premieres of Cure Wink and Cure Kyun Kyun were fun, but overall I've found the writing, tackling of it's theme (so far), and characterization a bit underwhelming. But, I can see why folks like it, and I'm only dropping it to complete other seasons in the Precure IP -- currently making my way through Splash Star, and plan to tackle Smile soon after.

Thank you for the coverage -- you bring up a lot of points I agree with! My highlights were your mention of Cyber Idol Mink threw me back decades -- it was one of the first manga I ever read from my local library.

Also, "hit with the stupid brick" is a hilarious phrase, and I want to add it into my everyday vocabulary. Laughing

When I think of magical girl idols, I think of Creamy Mami and Full Moon. I'm sure someone can comment on whether Girls x Heroine got into the idol business, but I'm less aware of their brief run.

I appreciate Rebecca's concern about not dealing with a serious transgression seriously enough. I noticed this in a different magical girl show and I reckon it's still a show for kids and it's more important to show the cycle of seeking forgiveness after doing harm rather than overemphasizing (or both cases properly emphasizing) the harm and its effects.

Right now I think the biggest thing holding You and Idol back is trying to stick too closely to the Precure formula. It's one of the big problems that Happiness Charge had; in that show, they came up with some interesting concepts about multiple international Precure teams vying for popularity and attention, but then did nothing with that as the show just conformed to the bog-standard Precure conventions. You and Idol likewise has brought up this interesting intersection (and possible conflict of interest) between the team being the prophesized saviors of Kirakiland who must battle evil and being idols using their powers for mundane activities, but so far it has only really skirted around the potential of that. It remains to be seen whether they'll do anything more with that, but right now the shows feels constrained in a way the last couple seasons (Wonderful especially) hadn't in trying new things

I do see where people who would prefer Kimi to Idol to be more ambitious are coming from. That said, I think it does a great job of being a return to form season with likable characters, or maybe I just have an unusually high compatibility with this season. I personally am not really into idol culture, which is where some of the more unique aspects of the season is derived from, so I'm kind of surprised I like this season as much as I do. I do feel like the Cures have managed to form a really great bond with each other along with Purirun. Most seasons do a solid job of that, but I think Kimi to Idol does it notably well in comparison to other seasons (maybe not quite the best in this one aspect, but up there in my opinion).
It's not all that similar when broken down to its component parts other the pink Cures being similar (and even I'm not exactly 100% sure about that. I can't help but have a little trouble reading Uta, but I'm not sure if that's the show being intentional or me overthinking it) but I can't help but say it feels similar to Fresh Precure overall.

I think You and Idol is simply a season that wants to do classic Precure but with some savory small innovations to make it fun and interesting. Like not being a Pink Blue Yellow team, and some really interesting writing beats like Kyun Kyun rejecting the call because she was traumatized.

I think one of the things Kimi to Idol has really got going for it is a great sense of humor and comic timing. I'm not sure I recall the last precure season that I've found as funny.

I do have to agree that it has been a bit of a slower start. To be fair, I only recently started watching Precure with Wonderful being my first and I have since seen the first four seasons and am currently watching the fifth. But so far it feels like a more standard approach to the Precure formula, which isn't bad, I more or less knew what I was getting into. But it does feel a bit lackluster at times, which is a bit disappointing considering we are finally dipping our toes into the idol theme. Which so far has been a bit underused.

Don't get me wrong, I like what I'm seeing. But having seen a lot of idol anime over time, I do think there is a lot of potential here. And so far the most we've gotten is Purirun uploading all kinds of clips to the Internet. I don't want to see the show going into the dark sides of the idol industry and there is absolutely no chance this is happening. But I'd love to see an actual concert that gets attacked or something, not only the virtual spaces or whatever these are where the evil monsters are defeated.

But to be fair, this has only been the first of four cours, there is a lot that can and will happen. I hope we do get a lot more finisher songs because honestly, that would be the biggest disappointment if we don't get a bunch of amazing songs from an idol Precure anime.

Miracle Tunes had the girls be idols and magical girls.

Though all the GirlsxHeroine teams were their own idol groups too, I think (not in their shows, but IRL).

I didn't want to assume about Miracle Tunes, but I figured that was what their deal was.

I had a couple friends initially bristle at that. As long-time sentai enjoyers, I dragged them all over God's Green Earth about it.

I mean right now Gozyuger is having the same problem of introducing an interesting conceit (the Gozyugers all competing against one another for rings) only to be too scared to fully commit to it and just sticking to Super Sentai convention lol. Which is especially notable when we're not too far out from shows like Donbrothers and King-Ohger which actually did go that extra mile to present something fresh

I was specifically referring to the fact that the colors weren't "right"

Precure's experimented with colour in the past too, especially in the two seasons before this one (first non-pink lead! finally another orange! finally another green!), but some people get really into what is or should be allowed. I'm on the side that experimenting with colour is a good thing and I get sick of the pink/blue/yellow trios and pink/blue/yellow/purple quartets.

I think Cure Summer is actually first non-pink lead, not Cure Sky. One could also make a case for Cures Black and White being non-pink main cures, hehehe.
Indeed, more unique colors would be nice. Give me Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black team!

I don't mind seasons where the colors are atypical at all, but yellow's been gone enough that I'm starting to miss it.

That's true, Summer is rainbow.
