Biggest surprises to me are that LuPat managed to place in the top 5, KingOhger getting second place over giants like Shinkenger, Donbrothers, and Dekaranger, and not having a single female character in the top 30 rangers
Also poor Kaguragi, the only KingOhger who didn't make it into the top 50 |

I do find the top 10 a little suspect since with all the recent series recency bias is almost certainly playing a role. The fact I haven't even finished Don doesn't help since I don't know how good those other series are. That said I do know a number of the series in the top 10 and they mostly all deserve to be there. My main issue is with Kyoryuger. I remember enjoying it, but finding it to just be fine. Kira, Zenkai, and Jet are all ones I think are over all better. I am very happy to see Gokai at the top though. It was the season that got me and my friend into Sentai and it is great, even if you have no idea about the references.
I'm less able to speak to actors since there are SO many and I don't know a ton, but the list looks good to me from what I do know. Same for mechs, but I'm also happy with the list from the ones I know. Main one I wish made it is MagiKing since that is a CLEAN design. Same for the classic, DaiZyuJin. |

I thought LuPat was pretty well received? It was certainly one I would vote for in my Top 5. Gokiager, Dekaranger, Shinkenger, and Kyoryuger would be my other picks and those all made it as well. So I feel very represented with this poll. The lack of Go-Onger is a bit disappointing though. Rita did make it to #12 ranger slot actually which is pretty impressive given how unpopular female rangers are in the fandom. But there is still a pretty big gap between her and Haruka and Luka down at 34 and 35 though. I also assume the people who voted in this poll are into tomboys when it comes to female rangers between them as Jasmine. I'm glad Ahim at least got into the Top 50 as she's probably my favorite Pink. I am a bit surprised Hymeno didn't rank higher it though given how viral the pairing of her and Rita was back when Kingohger was airing to the point they even did modeling photoshoots together No Pteragordon in the Top 10 mechs surprises me. I think it's genuinely the coolest robo in the franchise. |

Rita is gender neutral, not female |

Well, my beloved ToQgers made the top ten so I'm happy. Go-Busters remain unappreciated, though. And Gokaiger is a fine choice for first place, it's amazing how well that series' legacy has grown over time.
Recency bias is pretty inevitable given the target age of the franchise. There's lots of adult sentai fans, but still, a good number of the people voting in this poll would have been kids and that will naturally skew things toward more recent entries that they would have actually been alive to see. Given that, it's even more impressive to see a relatively less recent show like Gokaiger win the main poll (and Shinken Red, whose show is from 2009, win best hero.) |

Gokaiger continues to be the #1 series and it's not surprising to see why. I think it acts great as both an anniversary season but also an introductory season. Despite the numerous callbacks and cameos I think it makes a great first series for new fans to watch to see what Sentai is all about and once you've gone back to watch other Sentai you can rewatch it to catch all the things you missed. Unfortunate what happened with Gokai Silver's actor though which means his return is not happening in any future plans with the team.
I saw some complaints from people on social media that they should separate the favorite characters into categories next time. Reds, Extra Heroes, Male, Female, Villains, etc. because as of now it gets dominated by Reds/Leaders. I would not be opposed to that. Especially since the villains seem very underrepresented on the list with only a handful of them on it and all of them are the ones that turn good by the end of the series and join up with the heroes. Speaking of which the lack of Yodonna is completely disappointing Gozyuger having only 12 episodes out by the time the results were announced must have hurt it's placing. GozyuWolf ranked 26th but the rest of the ream is really low and GozyuTyranno is completely absent from the Top 100. Despite LuPat being popular it seems Patren 2gou and 3gou are not. They were completely shut out of the Top 100. Despite some nitpickings I'm pleased with the results.
I remember seeing some confusion over this when King-Ohger was airing and I think the best way one of the writers described it was in-universe Rita does not disclose her gender in order to maintain her "absolute neutrality" because disclosing her gender would give the impression that she might be bias in her rulings as a judge depending on if the person she was sentencing is a man or a woman. Although in the spin-off manga they do refer to her as a girl and as big sister. They also refer to her as a girl in the idol episode but she's in disguise there and no one knows she's really the ruler of Gokkan so it was probably fine. Out of universe the character is treated as female by everyone though which is why a lot of people including her co-stars were congratulating Yuzuru Hirakawa on being named the top Super Sentai heroine and at such a high rank. It led to some broader discussions about what it meant for female representation in Super Sentai for girls who normally had trouble getting into the franchise and how Rita resonated with them compared to other heroines. They even had Hirakawa on the broadcast to read some of the voter comments on why people voted for Rita which was pretty cute. |

For sure. It is just a little frustrating that it's hard to get a read on if Boonboomger and King-Ohger doing so well is because of the bias or because of their actual quality. I'm currently watching through Don with a friend and I know that very much deserve to be so high up, but I don't know if I can expect that to continue when we get to the next series. |

Just a minor correction, it's Tori Matsuzaka, not Torio Matsuzaka.
In the idol episode, Rita gets to perform as both a male idol and a female idol. Their first routine is pretty much a LDH idol routine, which happens to be the actress' talent agency, the same agency that manages the entire EXILE TRIBE idol franchise. A lot of supplementary material, with the producer and writer of the show even confirming that Rita was always a gender neutral character to a point that when they are in the process of casting the character, as revealed in the show's production blog that multiple people, regardless of gender auditioned for the character, it just happened that Yuzuki Hirakawa won the role and made it her own.
Best way to describe it is that the actress playing Rita, as far as we are aware of, identifies as female, while the character she is playing is gender neutral. A quote coming from the actress about the role in a TV Guide interview:

It's disappointing there wasn't a wider variety of classic titles on this poll but at least Dekaranger made it but I feel like the Sailor Moon and Evangelion mega polls had more interesting results to talk about.

What makes Gokaiger's legacy even more impressive was how, as people who were around back then might remember, the show had just started when the 2011 tsunami hit Japan and that event changed the whole series. So many past actors started manifesting the desire to return (and bringing along some well needed hope and positive messages) that they had to plan around and make room for them while moving some plotlines to the background. I believe the intent, at first, was just to reference some more recent and successful Heisei series, like Magiranger and Dekaranger. It's amazing how well that turned out in the end.

How much more variety can there be in polls for shows that ended 30 years ago? With Super Sentai every year brings new characters, stories, and robots to choose from so I think those polls would be a lot more interesting than ranking the Sailor Senshi for the 30th time. Without new material being made it just seems like it'd get pretty repetitive unless people suddenly have an epiphany one day and decide to agree Mercury is the best girl out of the blue I think it's impressive that newer shows can rank so highly. It's one thing to respect the classics but the idea that newer material can never be considered better than or should not rank higher is restrictive. And shows like Gokaiger and Shinkenger are around 15 years old at this point. At what point do they stop being considered new and become classics themselves? |

Yeah but "gender neutral" means without regard to gender and is about presentation not identity. That would be x-gender which Rita has never been said to be which is why the character is still being congratulated as being the top ranking female character.
The voter breakdown for Boomboonger showed most of its votes came from adult women. It's a recent show but it wasn't the kiddies voting for it because it's what they last saw. ToQger was also another show mostly voted on by adult women. https://ibb.co/F4KYM0kS Only 18.7% of the voters were under the age of 19. If we're talking 10 and under that drops to 3.4%. Only slightly higher than that was 60+ voters at 5.5%. The biggest turnout was people in their 20s and 30s. The fact of the matter is Super Sentai is 50 years old and a lot of people who were old enough to start with Goranger are either not alive anymore or probably too old to bother with an internet poll on the computer. |
