Anthologies like this are interesting to appreciate the variety of animation styles, or to see how a particular director's visual or narrative style developed, but as stories they're usually either too simple to be interesting, or frustrating because they're interesting but too short to deliver more than a teasing snippet. |

Considering that Crunchyroll is streaming it exclusively in North America, it's entirely possible that CR also has physical rights, which sadly means that nothing could ever come of it. |

I'm admittedly a bit confused and saddened by this take on Running Man. It's one of the most influential works for popularizing anime in the West, right up there with Akira in its exposure level for a particular generation. It was also one of the defining pieces for the cyberpunk trend for anime in regards to animation style, coming out alongside Bubblegum Crisis and just before Appleseed and Akira. I think Ai City and Megazone 23 were the only cyberpunk anime prior to Running Man. It's fine to not enjoy it very much, but I take issue with explicitly and emphatically stating that it isn't a classic of '80s animation. |

Taku Mayumura was one of the big names in early Japanese SF. His novel "Administrator" was brought out in English by Kurodahan Press, but they very recently ended operations, so it may be difficult to find now. IIRC Mayumura was also included in at least one of their "Speculative Japan" anthologies.
The only book of his I've read is "Nerawareta Gakuen" (which I'd render as "The School in the Crosshairs"), a short YA novel about a boy and girl whose school is being taken over by mysterious transfer students who have psychic powers. Short, simply-written, and with a timeless message about banding together in the face of encroaching tyranny, it's a great book for anyone who's learning Japanese. It was made into a live-action fllm in the 80s, and some years back inspired the anime film, "Psychic School Wars" (the one with more lens flares than a J.J. Abrams Trek movie). Similar to Mamoru Hosoda's "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," "Psychic School Wars" was conceived as a modern-day sequel to a classic of YA science fiction, but unfortunately it didn't turn out out nearly as well. There's another anime film called "Time Stranger" that's also based on Mayumura's fiction (and is also a rare anime with Moto Hagio character designs). There might have been a UK release of that at some point, but I don't think it's ever come out in the States. |

The 480p stream of this classic is dissapointing, especially considering that a perfectly fine HD master of the movie exists in Japan. I love this anthology, I watched in cinema during a festival and was blown away. Otomo's segment is fantastic, clever and visually impressive with its many playful details, but as a big fan of Yoshiaki Kawajiri I also adored the Running Man segment which simply is a treat for the senses if not for the mind. The Rintaro segment bookending the movie is my least favorite but it's an visually interesting, creative experience, nonetheless. I hope a blu-ray release will follow soon.

I guess it's like when Netflix Philippines had Gurren Lagann, where it's apparent the 480p stream was based on the Bandai Entertainment DVD masters. Maybe Aniplex wanted viewers to buy the Blu-rays. |
