MUCH EXCITE!
Losing count of all the sequels for January, last I counted it was on 11.

Even when the first two seasons were utterly disappointing, I still haven't given up entirely. As a car enthousiast, I just really want this to be great.....but are those even realistic expectations at this point? Or should I better drop this and finally go watch Initial D instead?

I don't know anything about this series other than its poor reputation, but you should definitely watch Initial D.

You should without a doubt watch initial D but don't expect any "realism" from it either.

Initial D is a much better series, clearly written by someone who was around during the height of Japanese street racing in the 80s/90s and loves JDM cars. It also has characters that are actually memorable and one of the best soundtracks in anime. Sadly that passion doesn't seem to translate as well with MF Ghost.
Although it still has the very unrealistic scenarios of an under-powered Toyota beating cars with much more power.

Yeah, the lack of realism certainly was one issue I had with the show, suspension of disbelief only goes so far. But if that was the only issue with show and it excelled in other areas, I could still overlook it. But there's barely a story, the characters are about as paperthin as they come, and the worldbuilding (and more particularly everything about the whole MFG competition) just makes absolutely no sense at all. The soundtrack is about the only saving grace....well, and the simple fact that it's about cars. Otherwise I would have long dropped it.

Worst thing is, as a direct result of MFG, I've gotten a bit hesitant to even start with Initial D. I just don't want that to turn out disappointing as well....
(But only one way to find out....as sideways as possible!)

I've had a lot of fun with MF Ghost. It's different from Initial D but it has its own charm points and carries on the legacy. The fact that so many seem disappointed with it is bizarre to me, because I came into it right off of watching Initial D and it basically met my expectations.

Anyway, excited to see Season 3's date is finally set! I've been really looking forward to it after Season 2's cliffhanger ending! Smile

I got into MF Ghost after I watched the HK/Japanese version of the Initial D movie on Netflix at a family vacation at a rental in the Poconos 2 Thanksgivings ago, and saw that it had a sequel, and then the anime came out right down my alley with seiyuu oshis and Serika singing the OP with Motsu. Looking forward to more soon.

Woo-hoo, a premiere date!

Boo, obligatory negative reactions (which are entirely valid).

I started watching Initial D mostly knowing it for the Eurobeat and the memes and the charmingly bad CG cars. What I didn't realize is that at its heart it's a damn good tournament shounen. The main characters have colorful personalities (well except Takumi at first, but that's by design), the opponents are suitably threatening, and the action is compelling and dramatic. By later seasons even that early clunky CG has evolved into some really slick and dynamic camera work. Sure, the driving sometimes stretches credulity a bit, but it's all for the sake of pumping up the excitement. The most important part is that the characters feel like real people, and you get to watch them deal with personal issues outside of their cars too. It's just a really solid show.

Woohoo! I got into Mother [expletive] Ghost after watching Initial D and LOVING it despite not being a car aficionado. I’m so glad there’s more to see and tell of Kanata’s (and Takumi’s) story!
