Episode 1

So this is exactly the kind of show I swore I wouldn't even bother sampling this season... something that has an overly familiar premise. No shock that I crapped out of that pledge the very first opportunity I got. I think I just have to accept that my psyche requires a certain volume of mediocre anime to function as the mature, wise and all-round great guy you see before you today. Or something.

In any case, I didn't mind it. If I was hoping that sampling it would satisfy my curiosity and lead to a quick ditch, my hope has been dashed. I'll give it the ole 3 episode test... unless next episode really sucks.

It seems like this is going to be one of those shows where the title on the tin is exactly what you will be getting. That includes a cliche premise, average animation and characters without much if any depth. Given that the season is a bit lighter than summer I will also view at least 3 episodes. Plus, I freely admit to needing my average fantasy show dose.

I almost dropped this show in the first two minutes when (A) I heard that older sister bro-con's irritating just-took-a-hit-of-helium voice (B) I realized the MC was ten years old and likely to stay that way for awhile. But I stuck with it and am ultimately glad I did.

This show has little to no nutritional value in my opinion; it's popcorn, and cheesy popcorn at that. But, in a weird way, the fact that the show is so campy and open about not trying to be anything more than what it is kind of let me watch it without expectations, and it was okay when watched just for the fun to be had from the watching.

We've seen this concept of talents being received in a ceremony before, with slight variations. The superior (IMHO) Weakest Tamer anime to name one. The Berserk of Gluttony one about the guy whose supposedly worthless talent enabled him to eat other people's talents for another. That anime I quickly dropped and mostly forgot about a world where people ate a skill fruit, etc. But that said, I kind of like this idea of a guy who's stuck in a video game world without being able to use auto targeting or instantly inheriting special moves, or of an MC wanting to be Batman in a world where all the other heroes have superpowers. It wasn't handled well, but it was handled well enough to be watchable.

I'll hang with it for awhile.

Actually Edjwald it's interesting to me that you found this to be campy and/or cheesy, because personally I thought it was pretty straight ahead. The bro-con stuff is so standard it doesn't even register as anything other than, "but of course" with me and same with the ditziness of his Swordmaster mother. Anyway, it certainly seems the three of us are in agreement that this show is unlikely to distinguish itself in any way, but for the time being is watchable.

How busy the season is matters a lot for shows like this one. When you are struggling to stay up to date because so many good shows release it is easier to just say no to an okayish one. With fall 2025 there is some more room for being an okay/mediocre anime.

I wonder how long it's going to take the MC to realize red-headed sword kid is spoiler[a girl]? Since the poster art and ED blatantly give that away, it's not really a spoiler, but...

Since I checked Dawn Beyond on Hidive...I stayed for Classless and happy to see an original (I think) take on the sword and sorcery hero coming-of-age bit. I always thought having to be "special" by birthright or getting a supernatural power were cheap ways to write a character who is remarkable/successful and a bad example for young viewers. It tells people that if you don't have the right parents or some special allowance you can't excel and more obnoxiously that people who are successful are innately "better" than you, so you have no chance. I liked I Parry Everything because the writer showed the more realistic truth that persistence, hard work and intellectual growth are the keys to being remarkable IRL and this show follows in that path. I think this will be a hidden gem...

I think it's the breezy nonchalance that the MC evinces while dealing with what would have to be life shattering developments and his family that is so far a collection of cliches. Add to that the contrast between the MC's expressions of steely determination and hard work and his habitual expression that hangs in an odd limbo between a smirk and beaten-down acceptance.

But the thing is, I kind of like that. I don't really need a grim Solo Levelling dynamic, or an angst parade. In fact, of the handful of new anime I've watched so far, this one is probably the one I'm looking forward to seeing again the most, whatever that says about me.

Arel and him showcasing that you can work outside of the class rules is the most interesting element of the show. He is using a wide array of (simulated) skills and that includes some that only a woman is supposedly able to use. Him looking for a guild showed that people are fully into the notion that class means everything without question (though a class provides useful bonuses).

I think the show could stand to make things a little bit more exciting. Be it the fight against the orcs or the duel near the end, it felt about as exciting as going to buy a carton of eggs. Lilia is a fun addition in how shameless she is.

Yah, if anyone comes a' knocking looking for Demon Slayer level action scenes, this anime is going to leave them disappointed. That said, I still enjoyed episode 2, predictable story arc and lackluster animation and all. The concept I'm still struggling to find the right word for has something to do with a laid back, sly dog kind of approach to a story that is supposed to be intense, so that there seems to be some sort of "Yeah, I know this has been done before and we ain't Attack on Titan over here, but what are you gonna do?" attitude. I find it weirdly refreshing.

Lilia is hilarious. I look forward to more of her utterly dignity-stripping behaviour in the future. Based on my experience from last season, there are three ways this show could go for me:

1) I start off liking it, I continue to like it as the season progresses and at the end I say, "gee, I liked that." Apocalypse Bringer was an example of this last season.

2) I start off liking it, I continue to like it as the season progresses, but at a certain point I say, "gee, I'm reasonably happy with what I've seen, but I have absolutely no desire to see this through to the end." Uglymug, Epicfighter was an example of this last season.

3) I start off liking it, I continue to like it as the season progresses but towards the end, it starts to lose steam for me, although ultimately I tough it out and complete it. New Saga, Scooped Up by a S-Rank Party and Outcast Restaurant were all examples of this last season.

At this point, I have no idea where this one is going to fall.

Ep2-I like this even more than at first despite the reviewers hating it. Lillia is so transparently honest and flips on a dime and Sumire Uesaka's performance really makes the character. What catches my interest is the subversion that skills aren't magic and blessings only make them easier to perform and despite this Allele outperforms the "blessed" and hasn't become Kirito. This also implies the "blessed" could be much better if they put in the same effort he does but they don't so he will shake up things quite a bit when the Dragon Fangs win the tournament.

Also hearing them say "mushoku" keeps me thinking of Mushoku Tensei but here meaning "classless" rather than "unemployed".

I am unsure if Arel is that overpowered purely due to his own effort or if there is something funky going on with the skill system as a whole. There has not been another classless thus far but it would be interesting to have another pop up for comparison.
