Like the review mentioned, I felt completely lost watching the first episode of this season, even though I remember enjoying the first season. I had to go back and rewatch previous episodes to get an idea of what everyone's doing, who's still alive, what all the various terminology means, etc.

I like this show. And the fact that it's overall going to be a short one (apparently 3 seasons?) is a plus in my book.
I highly suspect that Gabimaru's wife Yui does exist, but not only does she exist, but the twist is that she's actually the head of the ninja clan and the most dangerous. And her love for him is not genuine, but controlling him.
So it's nice that Sagiri and Gabi are getting closer.

To be precise, there's really nothing about human sacrifice in the making of a Philosopher's Stone found among the writings of classical alchemists. That's an invention of fiction writers for the sake of injecting drama.

I just got off the phone call with Yuzuriha and she's asked you to keep your sticky shipper fingers off her wife.

I always felt like Gabimaru having his memories restored would've been a better ending for S1 as it bookends nicely with the first 3 eps between Gabimaru and Sagiri. The last couple of episodes only serve to affirm this.

Review has focused mostly on the upcoming confrontation, so I want to highlight how on point was visual comedy in Ep5. Yuzuriha wearing Senta's glasses was funny, yet expected from her, but when we cut to Gabimaru also wearing them for his segment I've burst out laughing. Gabimaru lesson being "Step 1 - breath. Step 2 - break your body beyond repair" was great fun, and an accurate representation of my experience during stretching class. Yuzuriha getting handsy with Sagiri is also duly appreciated, may that ship never sink. But of course, main highlight was Gabimaru holding Mei up for her explanation of the palace layout. To be frank, I'm shocked and appalled this was not used as a screencap for the review.

Agreed... but also, since his whole thing is a trauma-derived obsession with self-sufficient strength, I don't think there actually is a way to humble him. Defeat just makes him double-down again on the idea that the whole world is out to destroy him and his brother and the only option is to destroy them first.

This was so cute. And them both having to stretch to reach the top of the map because Gabimaru isn't that tall either.
Gabimaru's crew are in serious trouble, and I don't see them getting out of it on their own. While Faction:Newcommers turning up wouldn't exactly by a good thing, the resulting chaos might create the opportunity for most of them to get away.

Ok, while purely on technically Yamada is Fuchi's last name as a Asaemon of Yamada clan, I'm not sure it's a good idea to use it in a review with such purpose, we've got at least 7 Yamada Asaemons alive and kicking on that damn island (8 if you count Touma as one), and 7 more dead ones. It's really funny, since quite often ANN reviewers have a penchant for using first names for characters who are referred to exclusively by last names in their shows, but this time it was the other way around. Unless Bolts had mistaken both "Yamada" and "Tamiya" for first names, which now that I think about it is quite likely what actually happened.

I wondered if the Tensen would have developed doubts about what they do, especially after the explanation that each of them primarily focuses on one way of reaching immortality. Sure, they seem to be making progress, but at some point you'd have to have real doubts about whether the goal is achievable, and being tasked with doing nothing but that would wear on anyone.

The blurb for episode 21's review feels like the opposite of the tone of the review itself.
I enjoyed the flashback featuring Ju Fa and Tao Fa. It's the first time we really got to learn about the Tensen. These two clearly feel reluctant about what they're doing, perhaps because they were intentionally raised together to care about each other, compared to the other Tensen who don't seem to display the same emotional conflict, at least not outwardly.

Feels like the story is in the endgame.
But manga readers have said this thing will be 3 seasons, so I can't imagine where things will go, will they take this all the way back to the mainland? Would make sense, as I think Gabimaru would definitely want to go find his wife and there's something going on there...
The new executioners are interesting, first up there's the Shugen fella...
Oh wait, that's the wrong image...
I mean, it makes sense that the chief of the Asemon or whatever is the strongest. But it does kind of rob our Tao fruit baddies of their edge somewhat, as they've made this guy already the most intimidating.
Although I suspect this guy is up to no good, and probably one of those "Ackshully I'm the strongest" characters.
His escape from the island earlier does suggest he's familiar with the place and might even have been here several times, as that sluice gate is the only way out, and it's doubtful he got out by luck. So something's going on...
Then that brings us to our other new executioner duo, one of whom seems to be the sister of the Tenza guy? Would be interesting to see a relation there, and I wonder if she thinks Nurugai killed him... so that should make for an interesting confrontation...
That the two of these are paired together also suggests there's some long backstory to their partnership...
It'll be interesting to see what part they'll all play here.

My guess about why the Tensen have waited until now to decide to leave for ingredients is that they aren't as confident in their situation as they tend to act. We've seen from prior fights that they are killable, even if it is extremely hard to do. The ninjas took down a monster that gave that people from season 1 trouble primarily through numbers. The prospect of direct action leading to conflict with whole armies might have been a sufficient deterrent until now. Luring people to the island would mean that the Tensen always have an advantage. People arriving don't know about Tao, and there are a bunch of low ranking monsters to do most of the fighting. Based on what we've seen, the Tensen having to get this involved at all is unusual for them. I think the shift in approach is because they are at the finish line and no longer feel the need to be cautious.

Also I am pretty sure the Tensen are only leaving now because only Rien finally just perfected the Elixir thanks to his study of Chobei?

Yeah, I don't see the Tensen being capable of surviving on the mainland the way they do here, when already a small group of absolute badasses are giving them trouble, and we can assume that there are plenty more capable badasses back home with armies to boot.
I don't think they really plan "world domination", more like the obsession of creating the elixir of life, and as of yet we don't know what exactly makes Chobei special other than the manner in which he acquired the Tensen's abilities, but he's not immortal.
Frankly, I do wonder if Rein suspected that Chobei would betray them, which is why he took off, but then why the ritual? Is he indifferent to whether the humans or Tensen prevail?
