Another story based on Greek mythos, but kind of loose, is Colette Wants To Die.

Another example I recall is the short but beautifully drawn josei manga Olimpos, which is a take on Zeus' abduction of the Trojan prince Ganymede. The manga does take liberties with that particular story and how the gods are portrayed, some of which Greek mythology purists may take issue with, but it's at least worth checking out for the art alone.

Ulysses 31 was one of my childhood obsessions, along with that other Japanese-French co-production The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Both showed on BBC1 on weekdays after school when I was little. Everyone spoke about the latest episode at school the next day.

The music of Ulysses 31 was epic, and even a bit scary, though I believe the English-language soundtrack was different to the Japanese version, and that includes the absolutely iconic theme song. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but the Japanese version just doesn't hit the same...

The episode where Ulysses and crew visit the cursed hospital planet and are attecked by creepy metallic plants gave me nightmares! Then there's the depressing episode with Sisyphus, the weird one with bird monsters that adapts elements from ancient creation myths, and so many others that traumatised my childhood mind. Despite this, the show inspired in me a lifelong fascination with Greek myth.

I watched Arion with some friends a while ago. It rather reminded me of Valkyrie Profile or Odin Sphere's take on Norse Mythology, where the gods mostly act like larger-than-life warlords. All we learned from it is the importance of declaring your parentage whenever you meet someone in a mythological millieu, where anyone you're attracted to may turn out to be a cousin, niece/nephew, or sibling. At least they didn't try to apply the line, "you can go half-way in Athens, all the way in Egypt." I want to say I came across that in Ovid's Metamorphoses, but I'm probably wrong.

Shin Mazinger tied Mazinger a bit more explicitly to Greek myths, with the old "Aliens as Gods" formula, or something like it. The franchise always had Mycenae in the background, but Shin Mazinger introduced the idea of Photon Power being derived from Zeus and other gods being hostile to humanity.

I was also astonished by this. The lack of Run, Melos and its various adaptations was also very surprising, considering its use in Japanese classrooms as a teaching material for decades.

I'm pretty sure the heavy focus on Greek mythology was an homage to Z Mazinger, Go Nagai's unfinished reimagining of the franchise from the late 90s that portrayed the Greek pantheon as giant robots, with Zeus itself being Mazinger.
