Well, I'm looking at the series and PERSONALLY, I don't think that this series is so special. It ain't bad but it ain't good either and there are a lot of other anime out there that are much better than Neon Genesis Evangelion. (In my opinion then)

But since the most of the animefans worldwide are so crazy about this anime (and off course, i needed to be the exception Razz ) I would really like to know what it is about this anime that you guys like so very much.

ps: don't start flaming me because i'm not a big NGE fan, if you don't agree with me, that is fine, i have no problem with that at all but if you're gonna reply, reply than usefull by answering my question, thank you

If you sit really close to the screen and stare really hard, you will see naked ladies. And who doesn't like naked ladies? Are you with me fellas?

I know that for a lot of fans, myself included, it's not just another fighting mecha anime or another comedy herem anime, even though I do like those genres as well. It happens to have some depth and tends to make you think and not just veg out in front of the TV. Plus if you don't want to think about your anime, the story line is at least interesting enough that if all you really want to do is veg out you can.

OMG NEWB ILL KILL YUO TILL U DIE FROM TI!!!11one! Ha, just kidding. Yes I am a very big fan of Eva, it happens to be my favorite. The reason I like it, is, sure it's a mecha figthing anime, but unlike Gundam, it actually has kind of a deeper meaning to it. It is pretty physcological, and it's not mindless and stupid fighting (G Gundam anyone?). It also has really awesome characters. The only character I don't like is Rei, she's to quiet, she needs to be loud and German, like Asuka. To say you don't it isn't very uncommon. I know some people who don't like it, and hey that's just not their bag, so whatever. It's either you love it or you hate it, no in between.

(And of course, as Aaron said, the nakedness)

May i ask did you get all "the physcological/mental things" in it? You might not like it if you dont get the "full picture" of the anime. Im my opinion out of all the animes I've seen its my favorite anime overall, and my favorite mecha anime. But then again it might because it was really the first good anime i saw and got me hooked. I mean i used to watch DBZ like 24/7, but i never thought of branching out until my friend showed my the first dvd of EVA, then i went out and bought it off ebay. So maybe it was because the first so called reall anime i bought, and how different it is, and how in-depth it is. But some people just dont like anime or any shows that make you use you brain while watching them. So some people like EVA and others dont.

Well Ramiel, you obviously haven't been exposed to much Gundam if you're thinking it's a shallow series.

Gundam, particularly UC Gundam, is much more about social issues and takes place on a much more epic scale than Evangelion. Each series has its own subtle undercurrent of a theme (even some of the "shallow" alternate timeline series like Wing).

Evangelion is an important series in that it opened up and legitimized a wholly different approach to mecha series. It's a series with intricate characters and a lot of symbolism. By that account, it's quite good. It's not universally likable, as the characters can be abrasive, the story is often convoluted, and the ending still raises debates to this day. But it's hard to discount the impact the series has had.

It was the first show I saw with really harsh emotions... deep despair, pain, self-hatred, isolation, loneliness... and good deal of psychosis as well. Sure, you can watch it as a giant mecha show... but I like it better as a show of self-realization and coming to terms with one's feelings of rejection, separation, anxiety, and despair.

The mecha action is mostly superficial to me. It's the emotional play that I love most....

Hey, I actually liked the insipidness of G Gundam...

Amen, brother. Amen. Wink I liked EVA for a lot of reasons (see above comment on nakedness), but the only thing I can say as to why I liked EVA as much as I did is: The head trip, man. It's all about the head trip.

I liked the ideas in Eva. I just didn't really care for the characters, except for Kuja, but it was a decent show nonetheless.

I only watched the first half of the show, so I'm sure this opinion won't count much to those who love Eva, but.... I'm sure it gets really good and all, and I'll probably finish the show someday, but.... well, these first 12 eps or so-- there's really not much to them. Monster of the week routine, fan service flying around, one dimesional characters that don't really interact much, etc.

I know, I know, all the sh*t is supposed to hit the fan somewhere in the middle, so I'm sure it gets really good, but I gotta say-- if you have to wait 12 eps (that's what?-- 4 hours of viewing time) to get to the good stuff, that is, IMO, a very flawed show. Everyone always talks about how deep Eva is, but hey, you've got to grip me for the whole duration of the show, not just the second half or the last 1/3.

Now, if someone were to say-- Eva: hey, that's a pretty interesting show that is pretty deep and has some great mind twists toward the end, and is full of lot of goofy mindless action and fan service in the first half-- well, that might seem like a more realistic description of the show (say, the way many people describe the first season of Kenshin versus the second, which I agree with).

Eva fans-- would this be a pretty realistic representation of the show to you? or do you think it actually is deep for the first half of the show? Curious.

^ I would say just the last six or so episodes make it worth while.

I wouldn't say that's a terribly inaccurate portrayal of the beginning. It does take a while to set up and let the basic personalities steep, but even in the early episodes you can see the general trend of personalities and how they will relate to things later. You can look at the early episodic nature, but keep looking for the snippets... when Gendo talks, when Seele shows up.... etc, etc.

It really does hit the fan in the middle of the show, though... that's when betrayals happen, interests diverge, and the things get muddled.... that's when it starts being more important what's going on in peoples' heads than otherwise.

True enough, namely Shinji's isolationism and self hatred. I guess you could say that the importance of these character traits don't come into crystal clear view until the EOE movie. However, without the initial deceptive lightheartedness of the series I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much as I did.

Asuka is one of the most memorable characters in my mind to date, not because of her troubled past so much as her spirited personality (which is more clearly shown in the initial episodes IMO than the later). Others were just simply good clean fun that have found fond places in my heart "Both Of You Dance Like You Want To Win", "Unfamiliar Ceiling", and several others that I've since forgotten the titles of.

For the most part I think I'd find myself in agreement, though I don't beleive that people who found eva to be a poor anime are any less intelligent, alot of people didn't want to sit through the anime two or three times to digest the whole story.
