How do you afford to buy anime? I mean, I've seen some people asking for advice on which anime series they should buy on DVD, neither of which they have ever seen before, or possibly even like yet? Also, entire DVD sets cost hundreds of dollars, so how can people afford to do this?

It's easy.
Save money. Learn where to shop. Our hobby is an expensive one. If you know where to look on the 'net, you can find plenty of box-sets for under a hundred bucks. $70-80 is a pretty good price for a whole TV series. Especially a foreign one. I buy anime only after Rent, Car payment, Insurance, food and bills. Sometimes I can't. Sometimes I can only pitch 10 bucks into the "anime jar" after a paycheck. Sometimes I can splurge. It's just like any other hobby. You indulge it when you can. |

Hmmm they either have a big saving account like me and/or a occupation of some sort that pays them. I love discounts and used/preowned anime so inexpensive and easy to find. So my advice to you tekkenite is to save money up and/or get a job,its up to you really.

To be honest with you, you get better deals on anime now than you used to. Almost all dvd's have more episodes and are dual language. Things are a heck of a lot better now than they were in the vhs days. It really used to suck paying 30 bucks or more on one 30 minute, single language episode of a series when it got released ( Gunsmith Cats, Burn-Up W, I'm looking your way).
So, how do you afford it. Well, a decent job certinly doesen't hurt. Also, a lot of people buy single dvds of a series as they get released. They don't wait on box sets, so their really only paying about 30 bucks every month or two on a series. Thats not too bad. Some compaines are lowering their prices on certain series. I know Serial Experiments Lain is now $19.99 a disk. Also, older titles like Venus Wars and Dominion Tank Police are now avilable at lower cost. Check some places like Best Buy for anime. Some of their titles are cheaper than what you 'd find in movie-only stores. Also, theres a bunch of places you can go online to look for good deals. Another thing you could do: If there's a series comming out in a few months that you know you want, start saving up well ahead of time. That really helps a lot. Really, it's not to expensive to save up and be an anime fan. Unless your into like 10 to 15 series at once. Now that could get expensive. |

Actually, I work my ass off. I buy only boxsets, and I buy only when I work. Buying individual dvds is the most likely cause of going broke quick. |

How? I spend ALL my money on my two hobbies, videogames and anime. That's how.
Now if only those 6 packages for me from deepdisountdvd hadn't mysteriously disappeared in transit then my plan would have worked a lot better. Seriously though, we are talking about 300$ worth of anime that just never showed up without a reason or explanation. |

Work like a maniac and have incredibly high standards so you only enjoy the best of the best of the best. That way you only feel the need to own the absolutely finest stuff.

But yeah, getting a job is definitely the better way to getting Anime. |

Yes, getting a job and saving up is a good thing. Also, after you save...do your research and see what is going to be the best for your money. Save the mediocre series for rental from a library or video store. Read reviews to help you, like ANN's very own Shelf Life.

Yes that would be expensive. But, I think Circuit City would be an even cheaper price, though sometimes they're selections are kind of crummy, but hey, if they got a series that you like, that works. Or like it's said a million times before, get a job. Or, if your parents (or grandparents  ) are real generous, then ask them to help out if they want to.

I rent alot of anime Im also lucky have and have friends with large collections so I borrow alot of anime also. I buy alot more Manga then anime thu.

I work and buy things that I will like for sure, reading a lot of reviews, fan comments and so on. I have very small anime collection, but all these shows I love.

1) get a job. to maintain a low style of living, you typically need to earn around $8000-$10k per year. only AFTER that can you really afford to get "stuff" like anime. naturally, this varies depending on your location and what you consider "acceptable" living. cities are more expensive. consider moving to a smaller city, if necessary. weigh the price of commuting versus the price of living in a big city -- sometimes gas and lost time can cost MORE than it would cost to rent a more expensive apartment. also consider buying a house. sometimes a house with a large loan will be less expensive than an apartment, if you don't intend to move for a long period of time.
2) look for bargains. why buy a DVD for $30 when you can buy 9 for $150? 3) save! if you give yourself $100 to spend per month, and don't see anything worth buying, don't just waste it on junk. save it for next month. at the very least, put it in a savings account so that you get a LITTLE bit of interest on it. every penny helps. 4) enter anime contests. i only ever won once (captain tylor vhs #8, subbed), but if you have free time, why not enter? your odds of winning are always better by entering than by not entering. 5) buy used. if it was watched, even once, odds are that most sellers will only consider it to be worth ~50% of its original value, even if all the bonuses inside are intact. also, see #2 above. |
