okay, so in my anime club there are these girls who are all about "yaoi this and yaoi that" especially when they're watching scenes involving two males (usually involving non-homosexual moments).....
well, I'm a guy...so I wasn't too clear as to what was going on at the time (ie. I was a little surprised that non-homosexual women would cheer on any direct or indirect yaoi references).....Since straight women usually don't actively cheer on homosexual moments in other areas of interest (ie. U.S. live-action tv, etc.), I wondered: is this something that carried over from Japan? Or is this something that came out of fan-girlism? Or maybe from something else? .....or maybe those girls at the anime club we're, um, unique and eccentric??.......I dunno, so any answers are greatly appreciated.... arigatou... |

I'm gonna say complete and total fangirl-ism.
Girls go "ga-ga" over bishie guys...with their wispy hair and pretty looks. So, putting two of them together...and kissing even...fangirls are in heaven. Not that it's a bad thing...girls need an answer to jiggly breasts and the many "ass-shots" that get spattered across anime. Who knows, maybe it's easier to "cheer" for two guys getting together when they're only cartoons, rather than when they're in real life. |

Legolas and Johnny D. worship are signs of the fangirls. There is a growing shift in interest toward the male-male loving with girls these days. It is perhaps a sign of gender equality, as men have been attracted to lesbian stories for along time.
Of course, love for the bishy seems to be concentrated much more in fangirls than other groups. My sister doesn't like the bishy much, while my female friends like the bishy. |

I thnik king_micah is right. Yaoi is very popular in Japan and is becoming popular in US too. While it's true that girls don't generally like homosexual stuff, fan firls like love to seeing their favorite male characters "getting it on".

At first yaoi wasn't very appealing to me, but with shows that slowly turn you into accepting shonen-ai *example, X* it actually becomes rather appealing. I'm not at the ranting stages yet, but I have a couple guy on guy couples I like.

That they do, girls need something to drool over as much as some guys need their "jiggle-effect" and "boobage". I think it's great that girls have something to be crazy over, but, I like both, so, even better man. 
Men aren't the only ones who've been attracted to lesbian stories, there are girls who enjoy these stories as much as any guy would. Could be gender equality, but I think it's something more along the lines of finding something the masses of girls can view.
There actually quite a few girls who cheer this on in porn, using real people, ya know? Well, it could have been carried over from Japan, or, it's something that was here before and Japan helped fuel that fire. |

now now, can't exclude guys from liking shounen-ai. Not sure if I'd go so far as to say all-out hardcore yaoi though. Okay, I wouldn't. I don't know any guys who are into yaoi... shounen-ai is another story, however.

Well isn't this an intresting bit of conversation. Girl on girl? Guy on guy?
Basically coming from a straight guy I give much props to the females that like and enjoy this sort of anime. What is there to understand really other than appealing to what you like. I think a certain beer commercial once asked. Why ask why? This applies. If I recall Angel Sanctuary had a little incest goin on or something. That bothered me a little more than the whole homosexuality ordeal. But to each his own I say. D.W. |
