I don't think ANN posted this news, probably because most of it was already known, but it's funny to see Skiffy spinning this like it's a whole new programming block.

Anyway, this gives folks a better idea of the (relatively) long-term plans for programming the block:

***

Sci Fi Channel Adds New Anime Programming Block

July 08, 2008

Sci Fi Channel will treat anime fans to new series and movies in its weekly Ani-Monday programming block, Monday nights from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. beginning in July. Ani-Monday will feature a collection of movies, series and shorts from Starz Media's anime distribution arm, Manga Ent.

Sci Fi's Ani-Monday will feature the exclusive U.S. premieres of a number of highly anticipated series and movies including series GURREN LAGANN and GUNDAM 00 (licensed by Bandai Ent.); as well as the movie STRAIT JACKET. The block will also include the TV premiers of classic anime series NOW AND THEN, HERE AND THERE and DESCENDENTS OF DARKNESS.

Other fan favorites set to air in the block include: BLACK JACK, BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, DEAD LEAVES, GHOST IN THE SHELL, GO SHOGUN, KAI DOH MARU, "Macross Plus," MD GEIST, NEGADON: THE MONSTERS FROM MARS, NINJA SCROLL and STREET FIGHTER ALPHA GENERATIONS.

Much of the programming for the Ani-Monday block is coming via Manga's new partnerships and distribution agreements with Bandai Ent. and Central Park Media Corporation.

Many of the programs in the block will be made available for download on digital platforms after their airings on Sci Fi, with clips and additional information available at www.manga.com.

Descendants of Darkness? Nice! That's on my would like to see but not enough to buy blind list, so I'm glad to see it coming. Good job, Sci-fi.

Now and Then, Here and There? Shocked

I was hoping Adult Swim would air it back when it used to regularly air anime during the week. Glad to see it finally get on Sci-fi. Very Happy

Oh lame! Some mod edited my post title to change 'Skiffy' to 'Sci-Fi.' Thanks, guys, way to suck out the gentle mockery that made my post vaguely more than just a cut-and-paster ....

Well, this gives me my chance to watch Gurren Lagann and rewatch Now and Then, Here and There...all in English, finally. -.-'

I've heard way too many awesome things about Gurrenn Lagann, but know next to nothing about the show itself, so this is a welcome broadcasting! Now if only I could boot my folks off the TV...

You could have just watched the fansubs. And it's not like it'd destroy your chances of buying the DVD or watching it on TV either. Even the "lol, what is buy?" crowd is buying Gurren Lagann at an astonishing rate, and it's only better for them, since it's the subbed only release. I think I may wait for the dub release, but if they're going to pull the 4 episodes a disc, 1 disc at a time, and for a higher price, I'll immediately buy the sub version, because otherwise I am paying extra for the dub.

Either way, I'm glad Sci-Fi is playing this, it might, depending on how word spreads, be one of the biggest anime on TV ever. And it's more instant gratification, as you get two episodes a week. And the time frame is way better than Death Note or Code Geass, as it's a Monday night and at 11 and 11:30.

It's not going to be the biggest anime on TV ever. That award goes to Pokemon, with DBZ nipping at its heels, and Naruto screaming to be added over time. If you're talking about the biggest "mature" anime on TV ever, FMA, Inu-Yasha, Cowboy Bebop, and GitS were [as] cash cows for a while. Death Note will probably join them, but even then I don't think it was quite as hard of a hitter...oh, wait! Bleach. Duh. Big duh.

As for my fansub policy, I try to wait for things to come out on DVD, and only use fansubs as preview material within two episodes if I can't find a friend who owns the show OR it hasn't aired on TV.

Even then, I never use Bittorrent or any downloads. I look for streaming sources, and if I can't find them, I give up, because I DON'T download illegally, and I prefer things in English anyway, with few exceptions. (Like Gankutsuou, Saikano, Fantastic Children and other shows with painful dubs.)

Buckle your seatbelt, Gurren Lagaan is beyond awesome.

I'm surprised they'll be playing Dead Leaves as well, I always thought it was a more obscure title...

They already played Dead Leaves earlier this year, actually, along with several of the other one-off movies and OVAs currently on the schedule. If it weren't for the recent broadcasting rights pick-ups from outside licensors, Ani-Mondays really wouldn't be anything more than repeats across the board. Razz

Awesome, they're playing Now and Then, Here and There as well? I've always wanted to see that, and can't wait for Gurren Lagann as well.

Looks like my VCR's going to be busy on Monday nights! (yes, laugh at my outdated technology) Very Happy

Awesome. I've always enjoyed watching the Ani-Monday block. This looks very good. I'm super psyched for Gurren Lagann.
