I'd say do not start him out with the anime if you are trying to get him into Angel Sanctuary. I am the biggest Kaori Yuki fan you can find now, but a couple years ago before I read her manga and even ever heard of her, I watched the Angel Sanctuary OVA and HATED it. The ova is really more of something you should show to someone who is already a fan of Angel Sanctuary, because that's pretty much what it was. It was made to celebrate the manga coming to an end in Japan, and well, it really doesn't do the manga justice. The anime is only based off what, the first two volumes of the manga? It really doesn't even start to get into what makes Angel Sanctuary so great. I say get him started on the manga, and feed him a few images from the artbook every once in a while.

Most definately the manga. I've loved her stuff for many years, thus I have both the anime and the manga. However, the anime... bad... quite bad. I found it ok, but only because I liked seeing characters I already knew animated and with voicing. The story in the anime is just spliced and key events and characters in the manga are just missing. So, just go with the manga.

Thanks much you guys, I was just unsure because I got roped in by the art book, then simultainously I found the manga and anime movie. Your right though, the Anime does it NO justice, it was cute, but so much better could have been done, and I hated how it ended!! GRRRR Thanks much guys!! I'm still open for more suggestions if anyone else has anymore!

Since he's an adult and a guy, he might prefer something more macho and intellegent rather than silly kiddy slapstick comedy. Like Berserk, Blade of the Immortal, Hellsing, Priest and Vagabond. (Anti-hero, action, blood, dark). I know most guys around my age love these type of manga since it doesn't involve the usually kids "coming of age" hero stuff. Maybe even GTO if he like crude humor/comedy.

Two things...
1) Not all guys want to read masculine books. In a matter of fact the person who's writing this is a guy and an adult (well, technically) and he doesn't give a damn about macho manga. Actually, I steer pretty clear away from them. No, I'm not gay. It's just my manga preference that's strange.

Okie, for starters, I agree, not all guys are into "macho" things, infact I REALLY hate guys that are like that. *shutters* We've both looked into Hellsing and I liked it better than he did. We both liked Slayers, he likes Chobits more than I do. And for those of us who are fans of Angel Sanctuary, we all KNOW that Angel Sanctuary is everything mixed into one. Its got action, love, lust, and the end of the world! Hell it even has someone taking Heaven itself! It pushes more contriversy buttons than I can even begin to touch on. Comedy.. thats just a bonus.
Robert is the same way as Brightshadow, "Macho" manga just doesn't do anything for him, he finds it less than interesting. It takes no moral thought, its just not mentally stimulating.
Roberts the kinda guy who likes Trigun, not for the shooting but for the moral points, he likes Outlaw Star for the moral points as well. Be it ok, we BOTH liked Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and Invader Zim, thats purely for entertainment purposes only, Jhonen just does good work. He likes things with heart, and a moral at the end, a good guy, a bad guy, and even sometimes a love story.
Again I agree Angel Sanctuary is NOT some silly slapstick comedy, I found alot of it less than funny, while some of it was funny, there were other parts that were sad and touching.
Now that that is off my chest, I still want to know what the total is about what to start him off with, and where the art book should come in heh.
Thanks Much,

Art Book? You could probably throw that in anytime once you show him the manga. When I first saw the pictures I just started to drool...
On the side, another manga he may be interested in would be Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind. It's both in manga and movie form but I think the manga is infinately better.

The Art Book was what got me into Angel Sanctuary, it was just so beautiful! Infact its what inspired me to start drawing in the first place.
But anyway, I'll take you up on your suggestion, after all me and him have the summer to cover these things. I get to teach him how to shop for Manga and stuff.
He arries tomorrow, so the over all vote is start with the Manga, I'll let him read the one I got from the mall and then if he really wants to read more I'll let him start in on some translated stuff I found on the net.
Is Clamp any good?
Thankies Much people!!

Yeah, the artbook is really what got me into Angel Sanctuary too. My first run in with Angel Sanctuary was the anime. That I didn't love, I just hated it. Wasn't intrested at all in where it came from. Then I get on the internet, and start seeing all these absolutely GORGEOUS drawings, and I find out they were from Angel Sanctuary. Course I'm an art student, so I'll read anything for the art, but I was happy to find out that along with the art Angel Sanctuary turned into one hell of a good story.
