To be honest, I've never gone to an anime convention, for those of you who have attended [any sort of anime con] or are planning on going to this one, what should I expect exactly? What do you guys do [beside cosplay and/or maybe look at other people cosplay]? Do I need a large amount of money so I can go crazy about buying stuff over there [since that's the only thing I can think of doing there. I don't really know what else I would see there.]?
And I've been an anime addict for a long time, I just, never really got the chance to go to a convention. =/ Last year a friend of mine invited me, but I had plans around that time [and they were gonna cosplay, and I'm not too into that kind of thing.]

An anime convention is a great, though a little overwhelming at times, experience. As you said, be prepared to bring a good amount of money if you plan to buy plenty of merchandise. And there will be a lot of merchandise.
Besides cosplay, there will be lots of panels & screenings going on. NYAF has screenings on a variety of anime shows. There are also panels & workshops on topics such as getting into voice acting (which I personally attended last year and found it very informative), Japanese music, Japanese culture, & video games. There are even game shows which you could participate in and a maid cafe!
Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam is the guest of honor, so you can go see him. A variety of voice actors will also be there and you can get their autographs. A cosplay masquerade and variety skit show will also be held the convention as well, along with musical performances.
It's alright if you don't cosplay. It shouldn't stop you from having a wonderful time at the convention. Be sure to get the 3-day weekend pass if you wish to fully experience the convention. Although it's a bit pricier, it's much cheaper than buying 3 separate passes for each day.
I hope this helps!
