Occult Academy (TV)

Quick plot intro: Maya inherits a school dedicated to the occult from her dad when he dies, but she hates the occult despite seeming to be pretty handy with it.

I watched this one by mistake on Crunchyroll, thinking it was Highschool of the Dead. I may have stumbled on the better occult/zombie type anime of the season by doing that. It seems like it has potential for a smidgen more depth to its plot than this sort of series usually has, which is okay in my book. Of course, it's too early to tell if this is going to be an awesome show, or just another so-so series that makes a hokey tie-in to the occult in order to be edgy or whatever companies think having occult elements in a series does.

On the plus side for me, I didn't find the character's too irritating, and the designs seemed okay. Pending how things pan out later, the story seems less preposterous than typical, and the music isn't terrible. Still, I can't think of anything that stood out to make me say, "I have to follow this series for the rest of the summer!" I'll keep watching as long as I find nothing better, and I'm hoping this one does something to separate itself from the rest of pack before it's done.

Pleasantly surprised by this one, I hope it lives up to or beyond what the first episode was like. I'm glad the main character isn't just some annoying bitchy girl because I hate characters like that. Though it could be too soon to tell. I feel and hope that this has the potential to be more than an average occult/ghost type story, so I have pretty high expectations for it. Am I the only one who wonders if spoiler[ the girl who was turned into a spirit or whatever gets to return to normal? That would suck if she was just a random casualty, it wasn't that clear. Also I was a bit surprised when Maya cuts her father's head off, and even more so that I flinched because of it. Anyway I'm looking forward to the introduction of who I'm assuming is "#6" - our naked time traveler man and what he has to do with the story. Also interesting is that he's from 2012 (from what I've read in the plot synopsis), the "end of the world" prediction date, where as Maya is on the cusp of the "Y2K" panic, being from 1999. I though that was pretty neat-o Smile]

This one is not so bad (and by that I actually mean it's good). I thought the first episode kept too many secrets and didn't do much besides introducing a single character. I see some potential here, but at least as far as episode 1 is concerned this is nothing but ordinary.

As for the girl, it was quite clear. spoiler[She returned to normal.] However her hair was not so lucky.

After watching first episodes of HotD, Occult Gakuin, Ookami-san, and Amagami, I'd say this my favorite new show of the season at the moment.

People may have been trashing Anime no Chikara for not living up to expectations, but honestly, so far their anime hasn't been bad, at all (and where is my Night Raid?!).

Either way, this is certainly one of the more memorable opening episodes around. I'll be sure to follow this show.

I'm kind of getting the impression that the mechanic dude's costume is a sort of reference to the mechanic from Baccano?

spoiler[In the Mayan calender the world ends in 2012... A nice play on our heroine's name.]

That was A LOT better than I expected it to be. This show doesn't feel like anime at all, also that cliffhanger definitely has me interested in where the plot is going.

This was a surprising watch for me considering how skeptical I've been of Anime no Chikara's past works (Sora no Woto and Senkou no Night Raid). The first episode was funny, had a decent amount of depth special thanks to what we learn of Maya and some decent supernatural intrigue/ action to boot. If Anime no Chikara can keep these elements consistent throughout the length of the show, this could be a surprise hit for me this year. Very Happy

I really liked the first episode. Hopefully Occult Academy escapes the Anime no Chikara curse.

Just streamed the show over on Crunchy. Right now this is the best of the current Summer crop until Shiki comes out. I really like how they took the first episode to really establish Maya's character and give solid explanations for her opposition to the school. spoiler[Hating the occult because it only does harm is a great way to look at it. Demon summoning, curses and the such are never good after all. Its a pleasant twist to the normal take on being excited over supernatural powers. Also her reaction to her reanimated father was to smash his face with a suitcase was great. The beheading scence showed that she knew that thing was not her father so she could smack it around. Maybe it was even cathartic for her to do that according to her flashbacks. It really showed her to be a smart, strong and even caring person. Maya is a great great female lead.] As others have mentioned I also got a classic Ghostbusters vibe. spoiler[With the ectoplasm goo, the spirit flying around scaring everyone and the gothic tower reminded me of Sgourney Weaver's Gozer gateway apartment building. ] Maya needs to remember 3 rules : never cross the streams, never think about the Staypuffed Marshmallow Man and when asked if you're a god you say YES!

Not quite sure what to make of that little bit at the beginning (the teleporting and such), and #6 appearing at the end of the episode.

and yes, the penis shadow was hilarious.

Overall, this show has a great mature-audience feel to the artwork, and humor (the teacher snotting on her hand and then grabbing the suitcase was great)

I felt the same way about this one and am not quite understanding the amount of praise its getting.

This is looking good, reminds me a bit of Ghost Hunt, but that is whether they decide to make it even more serious. I will also say that there was a couple lines that got a nice chuckle out of me like Maya spoiler[calling the goth guy "Porco Rosso"] and Smiley saying spoiler["Don't get cocky just cause you are a little possesed"]. It is not much but I just found it funny, also with the spoiler[possesed girl still needing her glasses, asking not to hit the face and afterwards having that crazy hair.]

Also yes I did spoiler[the shadow of the nude time traveler's penis, I got a bit of a terminator vibe with that.] Gotta say I am likeing the main girl so far, so far she is not so bad, but it feels like they are trying to tease us with giveing shots of her nether regions, though unlike others it just being dark. Though really will have to see more to get a good idea of the show.
