Yup. Berserk is my #5 all-time favorite.
The violence, as you said, is quite gory, but that only helps contribute to such a great story full of ambition, deception, and betrayl. Did you know the OST is only 34 minutes in length Great voice acting too. Nobutoshi Hayashi as Gattsu sounds very energetic and wild-spirited, all while still giving off a good "tough guy" aura, and Griffith (as "fruity" as he looks) is still percieved as a strong and brooding character thanks to the voicework of Toshiyuki Morikawa. I've also had a chance to play the recently released video game for PS2, "Berserk ~Chapter of the Millenium Falcon - Record of the Holy Evil War Chapter~" (talk about a long-winded title I haven't started the manga either, though I've heard nothing but good things about it, so I'll try to start that as well. Truely, if dark, violent, medieval dramas are something you enjoy, look no further than Berserk. |

Berserk is my absolute favorite anime of all time. The art, the character deveolpment, mood, setting, and story are all fantastic. Kentarou Miura is an absolute genius. I just started reading the manga recently via theHawks, and it is fantastic. There's a lot of stuff they don't include in the anime because it was simply too violent. I highly recommend reading it if you have some time.
Guts is my favorite protaganist of a series ever. Kind of like the anti-hero hero. I could go on all day about Berserk, but I shall leave it at that. I hope to get the Berserk PS2 game sometime soon as well...as soon as I get to modding my PS2 anyway |

Heh. That's an understatment This game reminds me so much of the anime. It really is a great game if you're into the franchise. Everything from the voice acting, to the art, to the music (though only the opening and closing songs are actually composed by Susumu Hirasawa), to the way the story unfolds. I just wish I could read or speak Japanese right now so I could play it .

I'm a HUGE Berserk fan myself, I own all the manga, seen all the anime, etc. When I saw the promos for the PS2 game my jaw dropped. I got it the day it came out, and while the intro is absolutely unbelievable, the game itself turned out to be a real let-down. The first level or so is actually really cool, but then it gets horribly repetitive. The game's actually very short, but to lengthen it they made it so you have to walk back and forth across each stage multiple times... and he walks pretty slow.
The fighting part is really fun, but also gets kind of boring so I found myself running most of the time. But it really, truly gives you the feeling of what Gattsu goes through everyday. I found myself laughing out loud (a good thing) whenever his finishing move would be something completely unexpected and cool. But yeah, the repetitiveness... Anyway, I don't post much but just thought I'd possibly let other Berserk fanatics know what's up. Now I'll go back to re-re-reading the manga while I wait for more to come out |

As great as the Anime is it, in my opinion, still does not hold candle to the manga and I'm not just talking about what has been released in English so far. The story of the Japanese releases so far is beyond amazing and as gory amd violent as the anime is the manga is so on a completely different scale.
Personally I would like to have seen the animation of the anime being of at least OVA quality, which it unfortunately was not. And I could have done without one little line in the first episode that ruins continuity with the manga if someone should decide to continue the story someday. |

Hey, Tony K--
have you had teh chance to listen to any of Hirasawa's other music?? I've been curious about it for a while, after I got the soundtrack, but I havn't gotten around to it-- the thangs are so expensive. I'd love to get some other opinions on his other work. !! Oh, and yeah, I love Berserk too.... |

Well, as you can see in his entry in The Encylopedia, he hasn't done much in terms of anime, though I think he has a few releases of non-anime music too. The only works of his that I've heard are the Berserk OST, the opening and ending from the game, and a little bit of Paranoia Agent. Previously, I wasn't too fond of his work because Berserk was the only thing I'd heard, and with only 34 minutes of music on that CD, I found it a bit difficult to praise his compositions based on that alone. However, after listening to the two songs for the game and some of the Paranoia Agent OST, it's really opened me up a bit more to his style of music. Most of his material seems to be a mix of instrumental and choral. And after listening to Paranoia Agent, it's good to know he can diversify between a little of the traditional orchestral instruments in Berserk and the more modern sounds in PA. But don't let the word "modern" throw you off. Although he does use a little bit more synthesizer, each piece of music is still very true to his style. As for his choral stuff, I really like it. I'm sure you've heard a few of them from Berserk with the male voice chanting in the background? I think that's him, but at any rate, I find pieces like this to feel very full of ambiance and very easy to listen to. If you're curious to pick up the Paranoia Agent OST, I believe Geneon will be releasing it some time in April. In a short time, Susumu Hirasawa is starting to become one of my favorite composers now and I hope he decides to do more work on anime in the future .

Pardon me-- I know this is marginally off Berserk topic, but.....
Regarding other Susumu works-- he also did the music for Millenium Actress, which has good music. He's also a long time non-anime musician on his own, but I haven't bought any of his albums yet. I've heard they're intersting, and hoped you might have listened to them. Still, it's cool that his music in Paranoia Agent is also good-- I haven't watched that show yet, but want too. Here's the link to his site-- www.chaosunion.com/hirasawa/e It's got some free samples of his other music. Also interesting stuff. |

Berserk is one of those rare pieces of film that will leave you breathless. Every time I finished a episode I had a nice, big smile on my face. I was really impressed thats why.
I loved the story development, character (gutts and griffith) and the overall mood was awesome. OK enough of good things there is one thing I didn't like which is "why the hell did it end so soon?" |

True, the frustration I feel at Japanese commercialism is intense at times. I wished that the OST would contain the full versions for several of the songs but, alas, it did not. They did include the full version for "Forces" as a bonus on the last disc of the series, but other than that I don't know how to get my hands on it. |

I have a quick question, and I hope I am not beating a dead horse with this. The new box set has it labeled as Season One, IS there going to be a continuation to the story, mor along the lines of the manga, or is it just getting my hopes up?

i'm guessing they're gonna wait until the manga is done before they do anything else. |

Then you are in for a long wait as the manga seems like it could go on for at least 10-15 more volumes. |
