oh, geez...this is my first post *blush Embarassed blush*

Anyway, I get the Chicago Tribune and I didn't even notice. Of course, I never read women news anyway so that's to be expected. I guess it's a good thing my grandma never throws out the paper. I'll have to read it later when I get back home from school.

Laughing Methinks someone hasn't read much manga

*Ahem* Anyways, everytime a new "Holy crap! Girls are reading comics!" article comes out, it always says the same thing with slightly different wording. Not to mention that there's usually always a flaw (How many times have I read the line "Girls love shoujo stories like Chobits and Love Hina". Although fortunately they didn't do that in this article). I'm going to pretend that the only reason they cited Full Metal Panic was because they were trying to give a bit of info on various manga series regardless of the shounen and shoujo labels.....

Hmmm...I didn't really like the synopsis for FMP! or the categorization as shoujo for that matter. There's absolutely nothing dreamy about Sagara. He's a complete military nut. It seems like that was thrown in just to make the manga seem more shoujo-esque. Illustrator Tateo Retsu even said that it's a boys' manga. Although she added, "with a girl's spirit," but that's likely because the story is told largely from Chidori's point of view.

Incidentally, is not original to the Chicago Tribune, but first ran in the New York Times on 28 December - http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F30D10FE3D5D0C7B8EDDAB0994DC404482

It may not be perfect, but at least the article treats manga seriously instead of ridiculing it. The mainstream media have always had problems taking seriously any kind of special hobby interest. It takes them a while to realize that the followers of a special interest like manga are serious about their avocation. And it always comes as a revalation to them, a kind of "My gawd, where did this come from" moment. (^_*)

Exactly the same thing with "Girls in videogames" type articles. I swear, it's like people have a big "Women in _____(industry)" Mad Lib sheet to work from. Confused

since the examples were right after the article, were they trying to imply that Full Metal Panic is Shoujo??? Rolling Eyes

Full Metal Panic was serialized in Comic Dragon magazine which is a magazine targeted at male audience(a shounen magazine), so Full Metal Panic is shounen.

Shouji Gatou(male mangaka) is the author of this manga and the illustrator is Tateo Retsu(femlae mangaka), even if Tateo Retsu was the author of this manga it doesn't make it shoujo(female mangaka doesn't mean the manga is shoujo) but since its serialized in Comic Dragon its shounen.

I didn't realize FMP was initially serialized in Dragon. Much like Slayers in that regard. Anyway, FMP, like Slayers, is a series of short stories and novels. I'm hoping these will be brought to the US like the Slayers novels are.

As a girl who both reads manga, comics, plays video games, and Dungeons and Dragons I understand this Holy Shit it's a Girl phenomenon. It's actually quite amusing. It's an enjoyable feeling to be a well liked minority. It's fun to say I do that and guess what I have BOOBS! ahem sorry that was a bit off tangent but I just felt it would be amusing to interject.
