Hi, I have been watching the anime adaptation, and while I think the quality isn´t that good, that isn´t the issue I want to discuss..
I just don´t get how this manga hasn´t been licensed in the U.S. market.
I have read that HSDK DVD (Funimation) has sold pretty well, beyond expectations.
The manga is ranked 4 in most manga reading sites..
Although it is a long manga, I think it would sell well.. So anyone knows why isn´t this manga licensed??
I mean the only reason would be ecchi, and Viz has a tendency to avoid this.. But well opinions, thoughts??

It being bootlegged all over the place probably isn't helping- I've noticed that a lot of longer, highly bootlegged series are often passed over by VIZ and Tokyopop in favour of lesser known, but still great shorter series [Tokyopop's picked up a lot of older 2 to 3 volume Mag Garden titles lately- Witch in the Artemis is a great book. I love finding stuff I've never heard of], or titles that have started running more recently in Japan [Rinne for example- this way they can stake a claim on it before it's bootlegged all over the net], or are less popular w/scan sites but have a niche in manga markets [Cross Game's been a long desired wish of many manga geeks sine the days of Short Cuts].

All that said, send VIZ an e-mail. Tell them you want it! That might help things. All they see right now is a lot of people who don't buy their books talking about it. Not saying it won't happen though- it all depends on if they think there's a market that'll be able to support a long series like Kenichi. Considering how many long series VIZ is finishing off at the moment, it's also possible that they simply don't have room in their schedule for it at the moment.

If you think VIZ avoids ecchi, you've never read Bastard or the Pulp magazine titles have you? Their Signature line has had a lot of crazy titles too, like Golgo 13. HAving watched the anime dvd's, I'd say Kenichi is pretty tame compared to a lot of what's out in the bookstore market.

Yeah I get your point, it could be like Ranma or Inuyasha, same company and they depict naked female sometimes.. So maybe they dont really have that much of a trouble with that..

My guess is that it's the length that's scaring them off. Also, I think I remember reading somewhere that sports manga don't sell very well here in the US, which could be another reason. It's a really long series, getting longer every week, with no guaranteed success.

Well yeah, but it isn't a sport series.. I mean Prince of Tennis IS a sport series, although they look more like DB lol..
But I still think is the ecchi that might be pushing Viz off this title.. But well that is just my suposicion I might be wrong.

I don't think ecchi would be a major factor. This is the same company that published Bastard!! and Midori Days.

Of course, I've never read Kenichi, so I couldn't really say whether it is more ecchi than the others. But unless it's got multiple drawn out sex scenes, I'm betting not.

It isn't a sports series? Isn't it about a guy training at a dojo? That sounds like sports to me. Prince of Tennis has got the yaoi-fan angle working for it, which I think Kenichi lacks.

Ranma also is about a boy training in a dojo, yet isn´t a sport manga.. Dragon Ball also had arcs where Goku trained martial arts, yet it isn´t a sport manga, its a fighting manga.
I see your point, but catalogizing it as a sport manga wouldn´t be that correct, is more a figthing manga than a sport manga.
Also Kenichi doesnt have sex scenes but it has lots of ecchi moments.

With Ranma, you have to remember that it's Rumiko Takahashi, so that absolves it of any perceived vices-- also, that the training was not the main point of the series. It's more about comedy and the "martial arts" on display are often preposterous perversions of the term.

Goku never trained in anything specific, like Karate or Judo or Tae Kwon Do-- he just got general fighting training. With chi blasts.

Like I said, I have no idea how well Kenichi adheres to the sports-manga thread. I just threw it out there because that was my first impression of the series.

Define "ecchi moments".
You mean things like seeing girls in an onsen? Panty shots? The main character falling face-first into the main girl's breasts? All that and more have been in other series published by Viz. I really don't think it's the ecchi that's stopping them.

Here is a little summary of the series:
Kenichi Shirahama is a 16 year old boy that gets beaten up, long story short he is a pussy and goes training in a dojo because the dojo's owner grandaughter is hot -and in the process, to make himself stronger- he has 6 masters, each one with his/her own speciality like Muai Thai, Usage of Weapons, Karate, Chinese Kung Fu, Street Brawling & Philosoper and of course the Dojo Master which is (as cliche as it sounds) DAMN STRONG..
As the series progress Kenichi becomes strong, but also gets targeted by Ragnarok a group of bad guys.. And thats more or less where I am at right now..

It sounds cliche, and IT IS cliche, yet is VERY FUNNY, has good fan service, interesting read Smile

Yeah, well I'm not the person you need to be selling it to. Confused I don't read scanlations, so I'm never going to try it unless it gets brought over here.

Email Viz.
