Following whatever series that drew you in, what made you continue watching anime? Why is that important?

For me, I was drawn in by Sailor Moon during the time when the Spice Girls were all popular and what not. I think it was the independence and freedom that the Sailor Soldiers had was rather inspiring when I was in fifth grade. This whole idea of "I don't need a guy to be good" was quite different from what I grew up with in an Asian family. After that, I watched Fushigi Yugi which had the similar characteristics. The major difference was how the characters evolved from being weak to being strong and even much stronger when there's something precious on the line. I love that striving effort in what I saw and I continue watching anime just to remember that.

i like anime for 3 reasons:
1) they tell fantasy stories, when i watch anime, i can escape from the real world and don't have to trouble myself with troubles in the real world.
2) Animes can go about situations that are sometimes completely impossible in the real world but is still able to let it look like the events could happen, it is not becoming some sick parody or so.
3) The plots are sometimes very good too. series often have 26 eps or so and then the serie really has the time to work out a decent plot.
I know that this isn't always the case but i'm always glad when i find a series who responds to these characteristics Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

I totally agree with you TF, its also the same reason I watch anime and play RPG games. They portray the stories in worlds very different from ours, same reason why people read fantasy, sci-fi or other fiction novels. They take you into their world, away from all the restrictions of our real world, simply captivates you. This is why I always rate my animes first by their world design before plot and characters. I guess its the same reason why FinalFantasy and other SquarEnix rpg games have been so successful all the way for entire series, because they all have very unique world design and good plot and characters.

If you pick a few of the best animes, they all have very unique settings very different from our world, for example a few of my favorites: LastExile, Haibane Renmei, Wolf's Rain, Rahxephon and so on; all have very unique world setting, not to mention most of Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli: Spirited Away, Laputa, Mononoke etc.) or Osamu Tezuka's (Astroboy, Metropolis) animations.

I watch anime because it's a good escapism from my very boring life. Plain and simple.

But also, it's a great way to learn about other cultures (Japanese, specifically) and their perceptions on our world. Anime can be both entertaining and thought-provoking, and there's so much variety to choose from, with the endless genres and demographics. I never feel like I've seen it all, because there's always another series out there that surprises me.

I have always been a fan of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre. Anime gives me a chance to escape and relax after working all day. I got hooked on Trigun and Outlaw Star and then Bubblegum Crisis 2040. It's my outlet, instead of watching soap operas.

I like pretty much everything about anime. The main reason would be the storylines. Anime is way better written and more compelling than anything else on tv is this department. Not to mention the incredible diversity of shows you can find, much more expansive and creative than the majority of annimations here. Other reasons include great characters, excellent music, escapism, and the artistic value.

Another big factor is it doesn't limit itself to FCC broadcast guidelines, there's swearing, bloody violence, and there's offen nudity, I'd be lying if I said I didn't like that, as I was quite sheltered from that kind of stuff as kid. Being an adult I can make my own decisions and are free of restrictions of that nature.

As mentioned above, It helps me escape the real world, anything that can do that, even for just a second is worth being addicted too! Unless it's drugs.. lol... think of anime as a healthy drug! Twisted Evil

The storylines are often intriguing. Anime is more daring with its material than most of the stuff here in the States. It's evoked emotions out of me that lay dormant in me for a long time. I'm so happy I discovered it 2 years ago.

More specifically, a lot of the anime I've watched are very relaxed about certain things that Americans are typically uptight about. Things such as nudity, homosexuality, and expressive romance. They've helped normalize those things with me and was a large factor in me finally accepting that I was gay. If it weren't for anime, I'd probably still be languishing in woeful ignorance of who exactly I was...and it pains me to even think of that.

It's also helped me realize the worth of friendship and also get in touch with my feelings. It's safe to say that if I hadn't watched anime, I probably would've remained the same arrogant, uncaring, self-centered jerk to this day.

I know some folk are going to consider this kinda weird but anime is a lot more than just a hobby to me. It's totally made me see the light and redefined my life. For that, I'm eternally grateful.

Because it's still two weeks between Formula One races and I don't have the money to travel to every ISMA Supermodified event.

Fatalism, Romanticism, Melowdrama etc... anime's often almost operatic by having so many archetypal characters, exagerated emotions etc... stripped down, stylized ... that's what i'm into

Besides fan service and awesome fantasy/scifi art and action Razz
