What are some of your least favorite manga styles and why? As for me, I hate the artwork in Saber Marionette J. The characters' eyes were WAY too huge and one person's boobs were bigger then her head! It was painful just to look at the cover art at the bookstore... Anime dazed

I tend to not like it when characters look too much like other ones. Every guy that Yuu Watase creates looks almost exactly the same (like the ones from Ceres and Alice 19th).
Also, it's not that I don't like shoujo, but most shoujo styles look a little strange. They sometimes look flat. A lot of people might like Paradise Kiss, but the art isn't exactly attractive.

I also rather dislike Saber Marionnette J's style. The character's faces are oddly shaped, and ditto on the breasts. I don't really like styles that are overly sharp or angular; I suppose I like my characters to have an 'organic' feel to them. Overly shojo-esque styles featuring characters of androgynous genders, gorgeous to the point of unreason, faces that look identical, and not a child, adult, or old person in sight (or at least a well-drawn one) REALLY irk me. I suppose that for this reason I don't like much of CLAMP's artwork, or Yuu Watase's. Those styles seem more eye candy than story and character portrayal. I'm more of a shonen person, and I like styles to be varied and diverse. Simple, cartoony styles that focus more on a character's personality than their looks usually are more appealing to me.

I have a bit of a personal dislike for the art style in Battle Royale. Excessive blood, snot, tears and etc doesn't work for me.

The only time in manga I can think of where a certain style (barring just plain bad art that ignores the basics) annoyed me to the point of anger was in Shadow Star. Everyone looked like an anorexic little girl, EVERYONE, even the grown men. Every time I turned the page, I wanted to yell out "JESUS CHRIST SOMEBODY GIVE THIS KID A SANDWICH!". This may not really qualify as a "style" so much as an inability to draw anything but stick girls, but it bothered me enough to mention here.

Hm, I'm the opposite of everyone else here, it seems. I like shoujo style more. I feel that to make a character's personality more realistic, it's good to make them actually look like a real person. Shonen comics like to simplify and abstract, but they tend to go too far. The characters no longer look human but like some sort of hobbit/pokemon creature with a big mouth.

Also, I tend to not like anything wherein the artist bastardizes female anatomy too much. It's a bit baised, but I'm just plain sick of comics where the women are all either nothing but a sack of boobs, or all look like 12 year olds. The story in these comics tend to be total crap too, which doesn't help.

I agree with the Battle Royale statement, excessive bodily fluid is irritating - this is what killed Gon's otherwise good artwork for me. That and the fact that if the character Gon weren't in the comic at all, it would look far far better.

Oh, and just in case I haven't pissed enough people off yet: I can't stand anything drawn by Ken Akamatsu, his artwork and storytelling is as bland and tactless as possible.

I've seen more tactless than that. I dunno, I like how he draws his faces and bodies... but maybe that's just me.

Heh, no offense taken. I do agree though, some shonen styles caricuturize to the point where it's ridiculous. Though technically not shonen, some of the characters in Cyborg 009 have such large noses you'd wonder if they'd been sticking them in nuclear waste.

It is definitely a style, just very stylized (not meant to be a pun). The funny thing is that while my instinctive reaction to character art like that is "ugh" I've found that almost every time I've grown to like the series and the characters, whether we are talking about manga like Shadow Star or anime like Cowboy Bebop.

As for me, I can't stand a style that was common in the 80's. It's a bit difficult to describe but The Venus Wars is a good example of it. It's a kind of a style which almost makes you think the manga artist thought leaving white spaces is a sign of laziness.

Well some people like creativities. They want to see dragons and vampire and stuff that's very imaginative and out of the ordinary, think one piece. While others like same old boring "pretty boy" and beautiful girl in their shojo. Actually that's what I dislike most about a lot of shojo titles. The characters are just drawn too cute (Peach girl or high school girls) and pretty boys that are skinny as hell (Legal drugs).

Except that half the guys I know really are that skinny. And drawning a character as beautiful or cute is the same concept as the ridiculous amounts of cleavage you see in shonen titles.

The gigantic sparkly eyes of females in Shoujo is what scares me the most.

Well, I, for one, agree with you, Haru, if that makes you feel any better. It would be fairly pointless to give my own sentiments on shoujo art as you covered most of what I wanted to say, so instead I'll try to reply to the topic at hand.

Now, despite the fact that The Rose of Versailles is a masterpiece, its artwork is too dated for my tastes (I feel sacreligious for saying this!). The same applies to many other older works, but in most cases the story is good enough that I can overlook it.

Additionally, I'm not very fond of excessively distorted and cartoonish designs (this is kind of a general description, but I can't think of how else to describe it). A lot of manga fall into this category, but I think I will second Nikku and use Saber Marionette as my example. And, just to be fair, I might note that shoujo artists can be just as guilty of this; look no further than the pages of "Nakayoshi."

I have to agree that Yuu Watase does tend to lack range (she is one of my favorite artists, though Very Happy ), but I'd like to ramble a bit about your second comment. I understand that there are people who don't like Ai Yazawa's style (so I'm not attacking you or anything, as this is a thread for favorites; I'm just getting slightly off-topic), but I think, artistically speaking, that one must still admit that she is stylistically effectual. Her use of negative and positive space is flawless, her character designs are consistent, and her art is realistic without being overly detailed. Yazawa is able to sophisticatedly capture the essence of a person's emotion with as few lines as possible, and I think this is what truly makes her such a prominent manga artists.

Er, sorry for babbling like that.
