I just watched all 3 Gundam UC on the big screen. It's like watching three 1 hour feature quality animation.
Animation quality, both character and mecha animation, is simply too gorgeous. Old School character designs by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko are great. Every character has unique facial features that stands out beautifully unlike stylized character designs we see on many other anime. I've never been this excited with mecha fight since Gundam 0083. Story-wise, it carries the same spirit of first Gundam for the characters while plot and world setting is more up to date. It's similar to recent Star Trek movie as comparison.
Only downside is that you gotta have some basic knowledge of the Gundam universe to understand sci-fi concepts popping up left and right (Newtype, Minovsky particle, and etc). My friend, who never watched Gundam, was totally lost.
For folks living in other states, try to have a film festival watch the movie.

I know what you mean.
That said, I've been really impressed with this series. If you're a Gundam fan, you really need to go out there and see it.
One thing I've enjoyed (with regard to the dub) is that it's very obvious that not only was a quality cast put together, but that so many of them are Gundam otaku to begin with (Sinterniklaas is a HUGE fan, not to mention a top-rate director).
