The encyclopedia entry doesn't say anything about it, and normally the ANN encyclopedia is very good about promptly posting such things, so it probably hasn't been.
In the future I'd suggest checking there first. |

I'm 99% sure that Monster hasn't been licensed. I don't think I am allowed to post the reason for that.

Umm don't do that. Don't give me fall hope when none exist. I mean maybe closer in 07 (if the movie ever gets made) but I have my doubts. Check the encyclopedia to see if something is licensed. Hopefully Geneon (at least I hope it is) will make an announcement soon, until then it's just the Manga that is stateside. Till next time, Delta Kiral |

Monster's a tricky series. It's a very long title with only niche adult appeal. That alone poses a huge risk for any local distributor interested in picking the series up, because it's gonna cost a pretty hefty chunk of change for a series that's almost certain not to even make back the cost to license it. It's difficult enough these days for distributors to make 26 and especially 50-episode series worthwhile investments, so a 74-episode series with very limited appeal is pretty much destined not to break even.
That, I believe, is the main reason Monster remains unlicensed, and likely wont be licensed for a good, long while. |

If what I remember is true then this definetly apply to Monster. That is that company are often need the sales of earlier volumes (1,2,3) in a series in order to have funds to dub the rest of the series. This is often why you see a series span 7 volumes, that last volume is profit. So case in point with Monster if each volume was 5 (well 5 on all but one with 4) episodes then it would be 15 volumes long. I think that all we can do as fan of this series is to buy the manga so that hopefully someone see that people are interested in this series. I was also working a theory that asking price jump once the Manga was purchase to become part of a Major movie deal with New Line Cienma. Till next time, Delta Kiral |

i predict Funimation will license it. they've been experimenting with a lot of different genres lately.

If this were a year or so ago, I would've prediced Geneon would pick this up, because this screams of their typical licenses (after all, Geneon picked up "Master Keaton", another show based off of Urasawa's works.
But in this age of caution in anime licensing, Funimation does look like the most likely licensor. As a second guess, however, I would not be surprised if Viz picks up "Monster" because it would tie in strongly with the manga series. |

Blast it all, thanks for dashing my hopes.
Anyway, a certain fansub indexing website, which is usually good about taking down liscensed material once that happens, still displays it. So yeah it's still unliscensed. |

IMHO there whoever wants its is watching the manga sales to see if the anime would be worth picking up.

I won't be picking up volume 2 until tomorrow. My local comic book shop receives their new shipments every Wednesday and he gives me 30% off all manga and comic books so it's worth to wait that extra day.
How do these sales number get calculated? Is it by how many titles a retailer orders? Or is it how many are scanned to be sold at big chain stores? I know for a fact that atleast 10 volumes of the first volume of Monster were sold at the local shop I go to. Yeah that may not say much for the over-all sales, but how many other comic book shop sales go unreported? |

Well of course there are book scan but it's doubtful that will crack the top 150. But sure you look at the total sale and a company could get an idea of what number of people are interested in this series. Remember that the anime is 74 episodes so it would take some sort of miracle in order for this to be release. Also I think that basically if New Line ever (that is assuming Josh Olson finishes with his other script, and his directing debut) gets the movie going then there is a chance that someone might give it a chance then.
Till next time, Delta Kiral P.S. BTW all this monster talk makes me sad, I am going to watch some Monster now. Thanks for nothing. |

Ah sure rub it in seriously though I would love it if they brought this series over to North America. I just read the first manga vol, and holy crow I loved it. I really liked the premise of this story, it's very intersting and entertaining. Especially considering that spoiler[ the one good deed that he did resulted in this really evil character surviing.] So yes please let this one be released.

cant exactly say that it was the one good deed that he did. being a doctor, he's done many good deeds, and saved many lives. saying that he only did one good deed is a bit harsh

I don't know how far you are into this series and I am not going to say anything (because it would ruin it) but Tenma does a lot of good. If you have finished the series, and want more info along with theory and other ideas see here That was kinda like the on going thread when the episodes were still being release. You are right though someone does need to license this. Till next time, Delta Kiral |
