(Sorry if this is the worng place!)

Title=Question

I was wondering about this for a while. I mean, American companies have to dub the anime, subtitle it, pay for the license, etc. A standard volume costs $20-$30 for 4-5 episodes (6 if your lucky).

And the Japanese Region 2 anime companies don't have to bother with subtitling (but they do have to do Japanese dubs), and they already own the license, etc. But THEIR DVDs cost $40-50 and they have about 1-3 episodes on them.

So why is it this way? I mean, American companies have been said to have paid over $100,000 an episode, and compared to Japan, our DVDs are really cheap!

Thanks in advance,
YRT

Short answer supply and demand. Not only that the market in Japan will support it.

The fanbase in Japan is willing to support Anime by paying a premium dollar for their anime.

And the people selling it aren't willing to change the price, because people will still buy it for that ammount.

Another thing is (that someone explained to me) was because things such as cars and what not are luxury items rather than nessecities, since they get around via trian. As such, they have more money to spend on luxury items such as DVDs and what not, which is generally why everything is more expensive.

And if you think how large this country is also. We are fortunate compared to the Japanese. And it's 3 eps on a R2 DVD at the max. And those ones will be about 70 to 80 dollars.

Whoa never thought about how disposable income could effect things. Damn I am thinking like I am back in Macro 203, and that wasn't a fun class. This is one thing that I actually had not heard yet, and it's a very interesting idea. But more then that it makes sense, if anyone here has been to Europe you'll know what I mean, even with crappy conversion rate for Dollars to Euro the prices are just so much more.
Till next time,

P.S. It's nearly 5 AM where I am and I have work in two hours what am I doing on this site?

^^; you also have to take into consideration their economy...and the exchange rate between the YEN, the USD and AUSD...

---------
I myself buy quite a few Japanese DVD's....and i live in Australia...For me its more a pref of not torturing my ears with the English dubs a lot of the time. But there are a few Japanese DVD's that do come out with english subtitles, mainly Live-Action movies come out with subs. Anime generally doesn't, though in special cases like the FMA: Movie ^_~...Its nice to have the Japanese version of English sub.

Well, you do realise nearly every AUS and US DVD come bilingual, right?

Actually, it really depends on the series. DBZ, for instance, has 6 episodes per disc and only costs around $30-40 at the very most.

Could it also have to do with the REALLY high quality on the DVD's? My Hana Yori Dango boxset has 2 episodes on each DVD and as as result, the quality is amazing, you feel like you're actially *in* the show.

Yes i do...But that is not my point..Generally the cover is changed...and with some English subs, englisharization of titles and such really offends my eyes and ears. I am weird that way. Thus why i never watch English dub anime *shudders at thought*

Agreed. But DBZ is an older series thus is why. If you look at some of the other older series being re-released like SLAYERS in complete boxsets (possibly with extras) it'll be expensive. News series will cost more compared to the older.

The HYD Live-Action? I have that ^^ and yes. Would stand to reason if you have a 4-8GB DVD and put a video on it...the less episodes you put on the better quality image you can record...also audio. But that also depends on the quality of recording. But i do agree the quality of these DVD's is WOW!

Hence why I said "really depends on". Gundoh Musashi is like, 10,000 yen for 13 episodes, which is relativley good, except Gundoh Musashi is universally a piece of crap Razz

PS. 'covers are different/english' is probably the worst bootleg 'justification' excuse I've ever heard.
