Ok, so I've been into anime for awhile now but I've just recently started collecting it. Therefore, I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to all the technical collectors stuff. Honestly, I don't care much what the collector's version of stuff is, unless it's an anime that I absolutely love, in which I want to spend the extra money to get the "better" version. I want to purchase the full series of code geass. However, when I search for it on Amazon, I really don't know what the hell is going on. I'm seeing stuff like "R2" and all this crazy stuff, and it's very confusing. I also commonly see stuff like "viridian collection" and etc. Also what's the significance of getting the "OVA" version of things?

The cheapest route would be to get the 2 "complete collections." R2 is the second season of Code Geass. So, to get the entire series, you will have to buy Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Complete First Season (http://www.amazon.com/Code-Geass-Lelouch-Rebellion-Complete/dp/B004G9UXEY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308199999&sr=8-1) and the R2 complete second season, which hasn't been released yet.
If you can't wait, then you can buy the 7 parts of Code Geass (3 for the first season, 4 for R2). This will be a significantly more expensive route. |

Hrm. This really should be in the Retail forum, but I'll answer it anyway before it gets moved.
Code Geass is split into two 25-episode seasons. "Code Geass R2" is just the name of the second season. As for OVA and Viridian Collections, ignore them. Code Geass doesn't have an OVA, and Viridian Collection is just a subtitle for Funimation's somewhat-budget releases. Bandai released Code Geass, so, you can ignore that too. The Code Geass special editions for season 1 are chock full of special inserts with behind the scenes info and little comic strips. The freaking huge LE has a music CD and a English radio drama CD as well. But if price is an issue, stick with the complete collection. R2 is still released in singles at this point.
Now for all the various terms you might see, let me try to cover all the bases. Funimation generally releases things in either half or full season sets, and eventually rerelease things under either the Viridian banner or the SAVE line. Both of these are basically cheaper reproductions of past shows. Sometimes Funi will do a super boxset that will have all episodes in a set, like the upcoming One Piece Season 1 set, but its been my experience that Funi seldom goes down this road. Bandai releases things in singles format first, and typically does LEs for their bigger titles, and eventually puts them into their Anime Legends complete collection sets. An OVA is typically a short series or a couple of standalone episodes related to another show. They are kind of a supplemental material to the show proper, usually with a higher budget and fewer content restrictions. Hope this helps you enter into the fabulous world of anime collecting. Thanks so much everyone for the help! And sorry about posting this in the wrong forum, my apologies. I didn't realize that bandai and funimation did things so much differently, thank you. I do have utawaraerumono in the "save" collection and my s cry ed and eureka seven dvds are anime legends. Thank you very much though! Like I said, I'm pretty much looking for the cheapest route to get the dvds unless its an anime I am dying for.

I think the Veridian line is going away, due to the new Classic Line from Funimation.
Note that some releases are starting to be DVD/Blu-Ray Combos. So now there is only the following releases: Original Release (usually in half-seasons) normal & special editions (special editions come with a nice box to hold both halves of the season and some sort of special item) Classic Line: the re-release line for stuff that is popular & sold well. Stuff like Gunslinger Girl, Trigun, and several others. They come with the entire series for under $50 (less if you look). SAVE editions: the cheap stuff, this stuff did not sell well, or it's in it's last re-release. The only problem is that they all have a rather ugly green colored cover art, however all of the ones that are like this do have reversible covers with better art on the other side. Bandai does have a similar thing to the Classic Line, called Anime Legends. These include stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Scrapped Princess, and even more recent stuff like The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (season 1 only). |

Haha but Veridian is their environmentally friendly line, they can't get rid of that! I mean I guess they COULD just make all of their releases "environmentally friendly", but they would just require them to make sense. And after all, they wouldn't be able to squeeze another $20 out of collectors. You know, people use to complain about ADV doing to many re-releases (Evangelion). But I think Funi is giving them a run for their money. I mean how many versions on Speed Grapher and Mushi-shi have there been now? |

I think there have been three of each. An initial boxset, then the viridian, then the SAVE. Except Mushishi just had two viridians or something in a row; it hasn't had a SAVE release yet. |

It started as the 'enviromentally friendly' release line. Then people figured out that meant 'your DVD boxset is made entirely out of cardboard.' It didn't go over well. Now it's just a first-run value line. I wouldn't be surprised if they drop it, actually. |

Well don't forget both had individual single releases, you know back when Funi still did that kind of thing. I tried to collect both of them in their original print single release and fail miserably. Also Speed Grapher had a "special edition" single release which came with art booklets and some other little stuff.
Yeah, as DuelLadyS said, there was a time that it was it's selling point. I tried buying a few with the hopes that I could help do my part for the environment, but I didn't really see what was different. Does anyone know if Funi ever actually said what made them "eco friendly"? |

Like I said, the first Viridian sets were literally 100% cardboard cases. Imagine a folded-up piece of paper with slots to poke discs partway into. People HATED it. They pretty quickly axed that whole thing. Whether or not the current stuff is still 'enviromentally friendly' at all, I don't know... but I don't think I've heard that line used for it since they dropped the paper cases. |
