That's The new, just had no space to write it.
Anyway, doesn't anyone find that animation on old anime like Escaflowne, DBZ, Rurouni Kenshin, Sailor Moon, and Slayers better than the new stuff coming out these days? I just really like how everything looked back then, it had such a soft comfy feeling.
I feel that the newer anime's animation just doesn't compare, sure it looks better technically, but it just doesn't have that same type of charm the old stuff does. Take shows like Which Hunter Robin, Gatekeepers, Monster, Hibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, and One Piece (<- ). All these anime look great sure, but the animation just doesn't pull you in like it does in the older shows.
I feel like when Alan Shazar (spelled wrong I think) is having his past revealed and everyone sitting around in that circle, it's like I'm there with them too, cus I'm so into the show (show being Escaflowne). Or those times Lina Inverse and the gang are running in those underground tunels in secret labs, that all looked so classic (from Slayers). It's like you are witnessing some great old art.
But the new animation just isn't the same. Sure I like watching One Piece, and I thought WHR and Monster were great, but they weren't as comfortable and warm (well OP is always warm, but it could be better animated). They weren't as alive! I'm beginning to sound crazy, but really, that's how I feel about it all.
So.........anyone else here thinks older animation is better too?

I personally prefer the more resent animation because it looks crisper, although this could be due to the fact that i never watch shows on DVD idk if older shows look better on DVD but when i watch them a lot of them are poor quality which bothers me. As for style i don't think much has changed. I do agree that escaflowne looks great but again i really don't see any major difference besides pure quality of animation. For reference i am basing my opinon on stuff like Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, the Miyu OVA, and the Ah My goddess OVA, although i am sure i have seen more stuff considered old. As for the new FMA FMP Monster Elfen Lied (i really thought this was great animation) and a whole bunch of other
IDK if you have seen the SDF Macross but that is so horrible animation, idk if i will be able to watch it.

Wasn't there a thread just like this a little while ago?
Handdrawn has a certain something to it. I wouldn't call SDF Macross animation horrible at all, I'm sure 20+ years ago it was groundbreaking, it just seems very dated now. I like my share of both worlds, but something about handdrawn animes is more striking than computer-cell animes.

I definitely prefer the look of newer animation, especially since it seems to be more consistent than some of the older stuff. One of your examples, Sailor Moon, always struck me as really not that well drawn, at least not all the time...the transformations and attacks are done nicely, but the in between can get really sketchy.
Fushigi Yuugi is also really inconsistent, with some episodes drawn nicely and some looking like the animators did it in five seconds.
Of course, not all newer animation is done well...I've been watching xxxHolic and every episode there is at least one thing to cringe at, mainly character proportions (at times Watanuki has reminded me of a daddy long leg...all appendages and no body/head)

Slayers and Serial Experiments: Lain came out at about the same time (Lain is 1998 and Slayers is 1995 to 2001) so I thought that those were odd examples to use. Incidentally, those are the first two anime series I collected so they're both very much old-school for me (yes, I'm a youngen).
Do I think that earlier anime series had better animation? No. If you take a look at the average animation quality of older series and compare it to the average animation quality of newer series, I think the newer series are by far the better. Of course, there are notable exceptions to the rule.

I think they both have their place, it really depends on the artist. A computer cel animation can look amazing if they really have the talent and the effort, but I think hand drawn animation was to technically limited to do everything they can do now. I do love new animation though, there's a few notable old anime as far as quality goes but I'd say overall I prefer the style and quality of newer titles to that of old ones. I watch an old anime and it just looks dated, I can generally tell right from the start that it's an older title.

I definitely like the newer style better. Some older shows like Ranma 1/2 seem so hirribly ugly to me I can't stand to watch a single episode. Its not just about the computer, but everything just seems more dynamic and pleasantly angular.

I haven't actually seen too much anime really, I can't get it too easily where I live, but I just notice the changes with time. I don't know about Sailor Moon too much, I never liked it, and I vaguely remember it to look alot like Slayers when I saw it so many years ago.
Anyhow, I see the majority prefer the new animation style. I really like that old sketchy look to old anime, but the newer ones are so clean and crisp, maybe even shiny at times. I really appreciated the older art more, especially hand drawn art, even though I suck at it myself. I didn't know Lain and Slayers were out at the same time, I really have no knowledge of release dates. But I can tell that Lain is probably much more crisp looking than Slayers is.
Maybe it's just me though, because I also prefer older movies. I pretty much don't like any new movies, and prefer older ones (even black and white) over them.
It's just that with the hand drawn art, it may look sketchy and not too clean, but that sort of makes the whole thing a whole lot more comfy looking, well, for me anyway.

Funny how Vision of Escaflowne, Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball Z, and Slayers are being considered as "old".
It's not like you're talking about Space Battleship Yamato, Mobile Suit Gundam, Lupin III, Votoms, Cutey Honey, and the like.
Maybe you're feeling a lack of connection or warmth with the computer animated anime of today, but perhaps you're overthinking it, and that's why it doesn't feel as comfortable.
My problem is with today's anime is the many, many, many recent shows that have the same cookie-cutter character designs.

I'm pretty new to anime. I've always liked it, but never got the chance to get into it properly, even now I guess. But those examples are the oldest I've seen pretty much.

The thing is you're comparing old anime of moderate length (besides DBZ) to some new anime that are 100+ eps like One Piece so of course they'll animate better. But there are just some new stuff old anime will never compare to like Cowboy Bebop, GiTS (actually most of Production IG's stuff), Last exile (most of Gonzo's stuff) you get the picture
