The series tells more or less the same story as the first OVA. There are actually three OVAs in the set, strung together like two movies. I would say watch the series first, since the OVA kind of gives away the ending, but it doesn't matter a whole lot, since they overlap.
I kind of ended up liking the OVAs better, but eh. Lots of air combat stoic fighting man goodness to be had.

I would say watch the OVA because it was made before the tv series and tells the more complete story with better execution.
If you watched the tv series first then i think you would regret it.
Anyway, kudos to picking up Area 88, your going to love it.

I prefer the OVA's. The dogfights just look better. The CGI planes in the TV series just werent convincing to me.

There were a couple of threads recently involving the diferences between the two. I also consider the original series a masterpiece, but still enjoy the tv series. Despite the slicker animation technology, the OAVs are better directed. The tv series does however have Keiko Terada (who I'm a huge fan of) singing the ending song.
