I doubt a franchise worth billions of dollars and hundreds of billions of yen would be "hurting for ratings". Think about the ages of the Sphere girls. They range from 19 (Kotobuki) to 25 (Takagaki), meaning there's a chance they watched Pokemon (or at least played the games) as kids. It's reasonable to assume they're doing it out of nostalgia, and even if they're not, it's still cool.
