Why do Romeo and Juliet fight with swords? I don't think I can take this one seriously...

You aren't supposed to really take it seriously. There is a reason they fight with swords, but it is not a common occurrence in the manga. Outside of a training camp where they use practice swords to train similar to kendo or fencing, there has only been one time they used actual swords to do anything and it is explained in the story why they are using swords.
