Strange Dawn (TV) Source: Original Demographic: Animation Studio: Hal Film Maker Genres: adventure, drama, fantasy Themes: isekai Plot Summary: Yuko and Eri are two normal girls who are sucked into the alternate world filled with tiny people. The people of this mysterious world sees them as their "Great Protectors" who can protect their land in a time of strife. The two girls set out on a mission with a group of warriors from the village to find out how they were brought here and how might they return home. However, there is a war brewing and these two Great Protectors are the political tool that every faction lusts for to rally the people to their side. Air Date & Platform: July 11, 2000 (Tuesday) Available on: YouTube Episode Count / Runtime: 13 episodes ---------------------------------- During a recent spring cleanup I found my dvd boxset of Strange Dawn and decided I might as well watch it. Having now reached the ending I am once again floored. It is not rare for a show to end with question left unanswered (although Strange Dawn does have a lot of them) but the bigger thing is what the point of it all was. Yuko and Eri never really made any decisions during their stay and as they leave that world has become a worse place due to their appearance. Lots of death and chaos. I was wondering if anyone else has seen the shown and what they made of the ending. Was the ending about how you should not expect a savior to arrive and solve all your issues for you? Was it to be fresh in that the mc's refused to be heroes? [EDIT: Fancy opener stuff added. -TK] |

Was Strange Dawn directed by the same person as A Tale of Perishing?
I confess I've never even heard of this show before and had to look it up. It's a 25 year old title so I *guess* that's why I've never come across it, but it is still rare for me not to at least have heard of something from the 2000s. Anyway, not having seen it, I'm in no position to answer your question. |

It is indeed not an anime you see mentioned all that often. I am a sucker for tiny people in a huge world (or rather the opposite in this case) and was thus recommended to watch it and things like the nice visuals (for the time) and interesting premise make it something unique.

You've kind of made me curious about checking it out which I can do on YT. Damn, I just have so much other stuff to watch, not sure I'll ever get around to it.

I haven't heard about this show in maybe 20 or more years. I heard it had release problems, with part of it (?) maybe not getting a dub? There was a fellow on rec.arts.anime.misc who thought the world of it and was really, um, pretty upset about that. Everyone who saw it said it was very well made, good characters, pretty drawings, good music and definitely not just a kids show no matter what the little people look like. There is a pretty positive review here on ANN, dated 2002, which says the dub is ok for the two girls, but poor for everybody else.
I had no idea that there's 13 subbed eps on YouTube, so I am very glad y'all posted this. My take on the ending: spoiler[ war sucks, peace good, getting sucked into doing what a system says you should do because yadda yadda whatever is bad. ] animenewsnetwork.com/review/strange-dawn |

I have not come across many other people who have seen the show but most that did are very positive about it (besides the ending). I have to admit that I went into the show expecting it to be very fluffy due to the tiny people and it is not that kind of show, the cover does make it look like that though.
