I feel rather conflicted after watching the first episode. Part of that is the show being about a VR death game which is something I am completely done with, especially since it does not seem to have a unique hook to it. The presentation which changes perspective at times is unpredictable, in this case I consider that more of a bad thing than a good one though. On the bright side, the show does have plenty of energy.

Gotta be honest, in such a super crowded season this seems like an early drop for me.

Edit: I should also add that the subs seem a bit questionable.

I think my biggest problem with this anime was that, for me anyway, the weird Super Mario stye CGI characters and world didn't clash with the horror to create a creepy vibe - it just deflated the tension. If the anime is supposed to have comedic overtones I didn't think it was funny enough, and if it's supposed to be a horror show like you'd think an anime with Cthulhu in the first episode title would be, it's not scary enough. Maybe it's going for a Dagonropa vibe or something? I'm not saying it was bad. The pacing and style shifts kept boredom at bay, and there was some fun to be had, so I'm willing to give it a chance to build some steam, but I'm not sold.

Episode 1

No point in discussing the subtitles issue given that ANN has already posted an article about it: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3215164&start=0

ChatGPT translation strikes again! I somehow managed to enjoy the episode despite the sub problem but if it persists, I don't think I can stick around. Although if it gets a dub, then I'd watch that.

I noticed weirdness too, but I kept giving the benefit of a doubt and assuming that "softies" must be some slang term for part time shifts that I wasn't familiar with and that "donations" had some Vtuber context etc. That does suck.

That was probably the worst official subtitles I have seen in recent memory. Not even a minute in and I had to look into what the deal was. And will probably be unwatchable if it continues into future episodes.

Not a great first step into something I want to be interested in watching, from literally having cosmic horror in the name, which hints to Lovecraftian elements. The Fall Guys rip-off did not work with the style they were using, not having the charm that you see in those types of games, nor striking a possibly useful uncanniness. Unfairly, my mind did go to The Amazing Digital Circus, along the lines that show does things more for the pleasant but uncanny digital forms, to sinking horror elements.

And on the Lovecraftian elements. I guess that I can pick out who several characters are meant to be. Big octopus hair lady must be obviously Cthulhu and the yellow guy would be Hastur. I thought one guy looked like a fish so I thought Dagon, but his head looks like a bird instead. Maybe wrongly assuming the previous one I thought the women with red tendrils would be Mother Hydra, but picking another popular one for having tentacles and having a black bow that could be horn like, my guess would be more likely Shub-Niggurath. And kind of figured towards the end that the "charismatic" host, with a black mask, must supposed to be Nyarlathotep, which I guess fits some of his traits.

Not saying any of them could be good depictions of things like Outer Gods, it mostly reminded me of a video I saw fairly recently that said that the Call of Cthulhu tabletop game is oddly popular in Japan. But is common to remove it from the setting and into more modern school settings, compared to the usual Western approach. Maybe why the whole insanity/death thing at the end of the episode feels so weird, in the sense that it looks like a kill but at least what I could gleam from subtitles they were supposed to be still alive just went insane or something. It had me thinking if that is the sort of way it works often in the Japanese tabletops that person goes loses their sanity and ends up like that. Rather than what I am more familiar with, like learning an eldritch truth or realising they got the attention of something they really should not have, which doesn't work when all the other characters apparently just met and got the attention of those types of entities are pretty fine. Not looking at something, peering into the abyss and feel that it is staring back.

I am so on the cusp with this show.

I really like the idea -- a game developer trying to mingle magic and computer code and winding up providing a portal for ancient beings? That's awesome. And I wound up sympathizing with the main character after episode 2, with the background info about her friend or more than friend. The fact that the Great Old Ones are inhabiting human bodies and are still somewhat influenced by their natures suggests that the posessees (<--word?) could be rescued.

But the presentation/art style is more like one of those old American saturday morning cartoons. Even the voice acting of the villains is cheesy and more like something I'd expect from kiddie fare. And maybe this is for a 10-12 audience and I should just cut my losses.

It reminds me a bit of Tasokare Hotel, which really would have benefited from some creepy art styles but just looked like a mid anime. Take the bar scene where the MC was right at the penumbra of light and dark, with the friendly barkeep in light and the bar in shadow. That could have been a really cool scene, and they could have underscored the symbolic point with better art and music, but it was just kind of meh. I don't find the monsters scary and the other dimensional settings aren't bizarre or creepy to me. I watch the anime and mostly I just see some good plotting and wasted potential.

Episode 12 (Finale)

I wonder what HP Lovecraft would have made of this? This was always among the bottom tier shows in terms of enjoyment that I didn't cut loose. It never really sank its hooks into me but it also didn't inspire me to bring out the broom permanently (I think I ditched it for, like, 5 minutes). I like how they handled the ending. I'm not jonesing for a sequel by any means but if one gets offered up, I'd probably check it out. I should probably only be scoring this 5/10 but I'll be generous and go 6/10... mainly as a gesture of appreciation that somebody came up with a bunch of Great Old Ones who not infrequently made me chuckle.

Yeah, there's elements here that make it seem like they're setting up for a sequel of some sort. Especially with that one character who shows up in the epelouge that I don't think we've seen prior.

As a whole though? I was frankly disappointed. Even after the initial shock of the AI subtitles being used for episode 1 wore off, the show just kinda lingered in the background, and just wandered a bit. My problems in particular are as follow:
spoiler[
The plot: It's an interesting take on the Chthulu mythos, but they waste it by only solely focusing on Japan. If this is supposed to have world-ending stakes, then I feel they should have had more people from other countries as characters. Maybe even make a few of the existing ones come from other countries and not just all be from Japan.

The characters: This probably bothers me the most because there's more than a few characters who contribute, but they don't do much to warrant much of role and feel more like they're there just for the sake of expanding the cast. Case in point--

- Tsukasa: Wants to be an actor beyond an extra, this easily could have been a chance for her to try and have her acting shine against the gods, even if futile. Instead she's needlessly "sacrificed" by Eita early on.

- Takashiro: He studies topics like the eldritch and paranormal. This could have been useful, but instead he too is shunted off early.

- MIko's Landlord (or Mama, as they're called): More of a nitpick as far as they're concerned, but I was fully going in expecting the fact that they're voiced by a male to actually be semi-significant in some way (like they're transgender MtF), but it feels more like in the end, they just hired a male to voice a female. Not helped by no one actually calling them by any gender to give a baseline idea. Their role otherwise is inoffensive, they're there, they help Miko and Kanna, but otherwise they're just there to be a supporting role.

- Joe: By far the biggest waste of a character I have ever seen in anything ever. He does nothing until the climax, and even then does nothing but stand around and try nothing else but recruit Kei during most of his screentime when he isn't dicking about eating noodles. He easily could have participated in the game.

- Eita: Saved him for last because he's the most disappointing character and more importantly, most disappointing plot point, in the entire anime. He starts off as arrogant and brash, like he's being set up as Miko's main rival/foe. And that is paid off when he sides with the gods. But then after the tower defence event, this just stops in exchange for him being a cult leader who made a deal with one of the gods to ensure his immunity from when they invade and destroy Earth. Then said god is sent back to his slumber and Eita is just reduced to a spectator with no indication given as to whether his deal was rendered void. What's worse is that he easily could have had a more active role in the climax as the one controlling Tick-Tock Man during the final battle like how Miko controlled Cthulhu. Instead he doesn't show up until after all is said and done.
]

All said, it's perhaps one of the most bothersome titles this season because it easily could have done better with its premise, but didn't. It's nowhere near as badly written as Nyaght of the Living Cat, but it's just infuriating in how safe they play things.
