(A) Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! (TV) Source: Manga (ongoing @ 17 volumes by Mai Tanaka) Demographic: Shounen Animation Studio: Satelight Genres: comedy, fantasy, horror Themes: gag humor, mythology, school, workplace Plot Summary: Haruaki Abe is the kind of guy wouldn't say boo to a goose. But when he starts his teaching career at a high school full of creatures that go bump in the night, he soon discovers that his students have no such qualms. Air Date & Platform: October 08, 2024 (Tuesday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: 24 episodes ---------------------------------- I read that Crunchyroll has been holding this anime card close to its chest too. The Japanese release date is October 8, so maybe it'll drop on the same day other places. The trailer sort of has me thinking this will make a okay pilot with a hard to sustain long term premise, but maybe I'm being overly pessimistic. [EDIT: Fancy opener stuff added. -TK] |

It's one of the handful of non-sequel new shows I plan to sample. I'm a sucker for monster school settings. Enjoyed Rosario + Vampire back in the day but not sure it would stand up to a rewatch.

The trailer makes it look like a fun time plus monster schools are still a relatively rare setting wise so count me in.

That was a fun first episode. It got everything I hoped for with a weird school, a lively class full of yokai and a teacher who is scared of his student but is trying his best despite that. Said teacher having special powers and the OP showing that he can go mad shit bonkers like he is possessed makes me even more interested.

Yeah, with the second episode it is clear that the show is going to be a dumb fun romp. Nothing particularly amazing but it is making the most of the premise and being a teacher in a very foreign environment. The physical examns being such an event is a fun example.

The last few episodes have been the best ones and that is either due to Haruaki not being in the spotlight or him toning it down a little bit. The show has sadly not lived up to its potential, a big part of that is Haruaki being a very acquired taste.

The end has been reached with episode 24. The show was no masterpiece but I had fun watching and the second half was considerable better than the first one. That is mainly due to the episodes getting a tad more creative with their set-up and because of Abe sensei being toned down a little, though he can still be pretty grating at times.

The second half was better than the first I thought. I don't remember any of the characters' names except Abe, whose ancestor is kinda famous. But it was really bugging me that the cyclops characters kept saying they wanted to "look you/me in the eyes," when a) even binocular people normally say "look me in the eye," which, being literal in the cyclops' case, would have made a kind of cute joke, and b) Japanese doesn't use plurals that way, so this was a missed opportunity by the translators.
I also could have done without the uniform fetish, which seemed pretty tacked on for no reason. Anyway, if they did another season, I'd watch it, even if I don't care if they do or not. |
