Arai-senseeeeeei!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

The manga is so relatable and I love the bold, yet soft art in the series! I'm syched for the anime, but the manga will always be top for me. Currently, I've been reading a lot of yuri manga and Morinaga-sensei's works have been spectacular, but I think I like KiniOto more than any other yuri manga I've read. The big page spreads are breathtaking. I wish Arai-sensei the best and I can't wait until volume 3 comes in English~
I think I want merch like keychains and pins to show my love someday, too. I also want them to be that vibrant shade of green so they are instantly recognizable from afar. Lol

Had not seen/heard of this before - it just shot to the top of my watchlist, though it might take a while for it to premiere since it seems like it got announced recently.

Lifted from Wikipedia:
Quote:
On July 30, a statement was released by Kadokawa in which they claimed the discrepancy was a "proofreading mistake" and that the marriage reference was based on "editorial speculation". An accompanying statement was released on the official Witch from Mercury website in which these claims were repeated, in addition to implying the events of the series are open to interpretation by viewers

Hmm.... Kadokawa again....

I don't feel like sitting through another 12 to 20-something episodes just to be told my eyes aren't working correctly.

Any fans of this series able to tell me if this will be worth the time, or are they just roommates. Rolling Eyes

None of that happened so I think Wikipedia is lying to you. This is an actual yuri series. The only miscommunication I remember was a few people trying to claim Mitsuki was non-binary or something along those lines but that was just some people on social media being weird.

It absolutely did happen... but also the controversy over a cast interview in a magazine and Bandai's post-cannon hand wringing over Miorine and Suletta's relationship status has absolutely nothing to do with this manga or future anime adaptation.

That said @LinkTSwordmaster, there has been spoiler[kissing and *gasp* hand holding in recent chapters of the manga (not yet in the available official English translations though) so they're absolutely not "just friends"]. It's a pretty slow burn cute story about teenagers though, so don't expect anything too explicit.

Really nice getting some insight into the author. I can definitely feel how Sumiko-sensei came up with this series and why it feels so relatable and real.

Thanks, there's a couple of other yuri series getting announced lately, but the art style of this one really stands out. Sumiko Arai very much gets a thumbs-up from me after reading the interview. Is odd though that the link to the interview now seems to be down? Am I missing something?

I know that Bandai Filmworks likely will not be on the project, but Kadokawa is a common thread on both series, and if the manga volumes make it clear in no uncertain terms that they're serious, it's not a comedic misunderstanding, and this is supposed to be a relatively grounded story, I cant help but wonder if the anime version will be as clear in its intent & un-altered from the manga.

Tinfoil hat theory? Yes, but Kadokawa and Bandai are major/minor shareholders in even ANN, and with the link to the article down, there's that little creeping thought I have, that like the Gundam situation, that something was said during the interview that isn't flying with someone involved - it could just be a website malfunction though, I'd like to hear from a moderator as to what has happened.

It's not been since NANA - which is now 20 years old and in spite of tonal vibes is not an anime featuring a yuri relationship - that I've seen something like Wasn't a Guy at All and it's art and thought internally "ah, this actually could be something special!"

And while it was a different company managing it, I will remind longtime yuri viewers that when Sentai Filmworks released Loups=Garous in English a decade & a half ago, the main character was voiced by a guy and the subtitles changed - it stands out as a blatant/intentional/malicious alteration, one that I'm not going to forget particularly soon, and Kadokawa certainly does not read as if they're any more trustworthy after Gundam.

Regardless, hopefully the interview goes viewable again, and thanks to it, I now know something cool exists that I did not before. If something goes wrong with the anime, I at least can try to rent/borrow the books at some point.

Oh, they're talking about Gundam? I thought they were talking about a controversy that happened with this series. What does Gundam have to do this with this at all?

I only read the interview once so I don't remember every thing they talked about but the only things that stood out to me that I can recall off the top of my head that might be a problem was either maybe some kind of copyright issue with the music lists or maybe since they used the word 'queer' in a translation of what Arai said at one point which seemed a bit out of place when I read it. But given how stickler Japanese PR can be it could also just as easily be a simple typo they feel might make the mangaka look bad so they asked ANN to remove it, change it, and maybe submit it again for approval.

Nothing, but Bandai broke some people's minds by saying they didn't want to confirm any romance in their kids show made to sell plastic model kits to the point we are now seeing conspiracy theories that they're on a mission to eliminate all yuri from anime.

This series is the epitome of a slow burn so unless the anime adaption changes something people are going to be left hungering for something but maybe that will appeal to some people. I'm more of a WataNare fan myself. 2025 is shaping up to be a good year for yuri anime adaptions so we're not exactly starving no matter what people are into.

Does anyone know where the interview went? Link I got from both Google and Reddit lead to a 404. This thread exists, so the interview did at some point. Does anyone know why it got taken down?

I'm hoping that now that we're starting to get back into weekly business hours, we'll be able to find out what happened.

It went from being one of the main banner articles featured at the top of the site to completely gone in around a 24h period.

I went and hunted it down and I really like the vibe. It reminds me of Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad a bit. Am very excited that there's gonna be an anime coming soon, though I am left wondering how they're gonna pace out episodes when some of the pages and chapter arcs seem to start and stop in short order....
