I could be wrong, but the trailer makes it look like this is going to be a beautifully animated isekai with a slice of life, soothing focus instead of the usual "Let's head to the Adventurer's Guild and blow up the stats recording crystal so I can start forming my harem" kind of an enterprise. Water as a solitary element also seems less dramatic than earth, wind and fire (not the old musical group) and the usual OP magical antics that Isekai protagonists get up to. Since isekai and slice of life are two of my favorite genres, I'm looking forward to it.

I hope it goes a little faster than the novel version.spoiler[ A full half of the first volume passes before he meets another human.] Basically 20 years of fighting monsters with magic. spoiler[Monsters that also have magic.] Basically Robinson Caruso.

Alan45, I'd appreciate if you put any information gleaned from the source material in spoiler tags, thanks.

Sorry about that, the rest of the information is available in the plot summary above. I don't see the information about how much space that took in the light novel as a plot element. The anime will surely change that. |

Except for the timeline, all of that could be gathered from the trailers too, so no big. I'm assuming we can't put links to the trailers since I never see anyone doing it or I'd have put them in with all the other info.

Actually, Alan45, you didn't tag the information I was responding to: spoiler[a full half volume of the source material passes by before the MC meets another human.]
That gets me speculating on things that I don't want to be speculating on right now and it is not information I would have had access to until you provided it. You also gave away something that wasn't clear to anime only viewers in the I'm an Evil Intergalactic Lord before the anime itself cleared it up, so I'm kind of hoping to get you in the mindset of the rules which clearly state not to divulge ANY information (unless in spoiler tags) gleaned from source material that has not shown up in the anime adaptation. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Thanks. |

Should be a fun time, there have been some recent novel adaptations that were less than stellar (looking at you Your Forma) so I can use a solid/good one.

Liked the vibe.
Liked the look. Liked the music. As to the isekai tropes I've occasionally ranted about, It did begin with the typical isekai reincarnation (even including Truck-Kun who has yet to get his or her own anime), but then it took a detour, and this obviously wasn't made to be a cheap cash grab. The MC may well become OP given that he's now slicing rock with intense jets of pressurized water, but at least they're being creative about it and not falling back on an insta-game system power up. it also doesn't look like the MC's going to be having adoring harem tropes dropping at his feet like flopping fish on a boat deck. The MC is a bit of a cypher. We don't know anything about his background, really, but he seems like an odd combination of naive and innocent and also used to hardship and resilient. I don't know if we'll ever find out what his IRL deal was, or if the show's going to discard his former life like wrapping paper, but I wouldn't mind getting a little insight into what makes him tick.. Enjoyed it. |

Episode 1
Yep, this is definitely upper level isekai rather than sub-basement. I'm happy for you, Edjwald! I know how fond you are of the genre, especially when it's done right. I like how not all the monsters are simple antagonists. Some like the Fairy King are downright helpful, some like the dragon are informative and some like the assassin hawk are kind of nuanced, instead of just, "kill-kill-kill!" Seems like this show will be no slouch in the imagination and narrative skill department. |

Thanks, Blood. The show will probably lose some watchers who want a lot of character interaction, friction, or boobs right off the bat. I'm not criticizing those things either; I just know that I can happily stare at a slow paced anime the way some people stare at fish tanks if the anime has a nice vibe, look, music, and a main character I empathize with, and not everyone is built that way. Nor should they be, I guess. Grudgingly. Bastards.
The main character is the only thing I'm not sure of here. In Farming Life in Another World, they took a few minutes to portray a man who had been sick and stuck in a hospital bed for most of his life. It was brief but effective, and when that anime also had a first episode that spent the entire time with the MC struggling to survive in the wilderness, I was rooting for him and understood why he was just enjoying being able to move around. This MC is a blank, and that can work for awhile because there's a mystery to that. It's better than having his background summed up and left behind, like an obligation or an excuse, which happens a lot. And it's better than, say, Rudeus. But The Faraway Paladin was another isekai that was rendered well and had good music but ultimately became boring because of its bland, too perfect, sterile Gary Sue of an MC, at least in my opinion. And if the MC ever moved beyond that, I missed it because I eventually dropped off in the second season. So I liked this show and am looking forward to it, I just hope the MC finds a compromise between too perfect, too bland, or too douchey as it develops, |

@Edjwald
You might want to pick up the novel version. spoiler[It starts with his life on earth before he died.] There may be a site where you can read the first chapter or so. |

I have to be honest: I don't really care about his first life. I'm so used to isekai that I really don't feel the need to know the particulars of what happened beforehand. Of course I'd like him to be an interesting character, but that can be achieved without knowing about his life 1.0, imo.

Part of that is their previous life amounting to being treated badly and getting overworked 90% of the time. You rarely see a isekai mc who had a happy life before his exit.
Episode wise I liked the premiere. They found a decent balance between keeping things moving while also not rushing through the mc building his foundation. Ryou being a bit out there in some regards does a lot to keep me interested. There is something to be said about a mc who works by slightly different logic than the rest of the world, it keeps things entertaining with room for some fun gags. |
