See You Tomorrow at the Food Court (TV) Source: Manga (ongoing @ 2 volumes by Shinichirō Nariie) Demographic: Seinen Animation Studio: Atelier Pontdarc Genres: comedy, slice of life Themes: CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things), segments Plot Summary: Wada is an honor student who keeps to herself and has an air of mystery around her. Yamamoto is an intimidating fashionista with dyed blond hair and a shortened skirt. Though this unlikely duo seems to have nothing in common, it's only during their daily meetings at the food court that they can be themselves. This is very much one of those anime that you either enjoy or find insanely boring. I fall in the former group due to the chemistry between the girls, some solid jokes and being able to enjoy some dumb banter about nothing. The bit with Wada spazzing out due to the cooking conversation of the other girls sold me on watching the six episodes.

This show was totally off my radar - I thought there was a fairly good chance I'd be going "Meh" and arousing the wrath of Piglet The Grate, defender of truth, justice, and various CGDCT anime
 (Look, I swear to God, I know that anime about laid back girls camping is great...it's not the anime, it's me! It's me!) But I didn't just enjoy the first episode, I loved it.
This is exactly the kind of chill, somewhat eccentric, original, low stakes slice of life type anime that I like on a Monday. The conversations sounded like real conversations and I thought the characters had distinct, idiosyncratic personalities that played well off of each other. All of that is not necessarily a good sign. The last anime I loved that took place in a customer service type area and was 100% weird conversation based was my beloved Snack Basue, which didn't exactly set the anime world on fire. More like set a dumpster on fire according to most people. But these conversations are only slightly weird, and the protagonists are much better rendered and cute waifus to boot; they don't have the mildly depressing aura of life's losers killing time that permeated the bar of Snack Basue, so maybe the anime will do all right. I hope so. Although geez, I really wasn't expecting to add an unexpected late arrival on to my watch list. My plate's getting a little full. Edited to change "Sweat to god" to "Swear to God" though it might have worked either way. |

I really enjoyed this episode and totally love the chemistry between the two leads! The only disappointment that I have is learning that this will only be six episodes.

If this was going to be any more than six episodes, I'm not sure I would have kept it. I'm still not sure if I'll stick out until number six, but we'll see. |

The second episode was a great showcase of the friendship between Wada and Yamamoto. The former keeps things very alive with lots of sudden outbursts/reactions and being a tad needy while the latter is almost always reliable when needed such as dealing with spicy food and getting a figurine. Said figurine revealed the truth regarding Abel. Spicy food wise I agree, I will never get people liking a meal that makes them sweat like a pig.

Dude, sweating helps get rid of the toxins and keeps the ducts clear! When's the last time you heard of a health resort with a no-sweat lodge?
That's science! Ahem. Anyhow, as glad as I was that Takopi's original sin is a half course anime, I'm that sad that this one also only has 6 episodes. It's filled in the void that Catch Me at the Ballpark left recently. Anybody else noticed that while Wada is unconventional in her thinking and all over the place emotionally and conversation wise, she's the one who focusses more on conforming to surface appearances, while Yamamoto, who seems much more "normal" and calm and possessing of common sense, is the one who's out there fashion wise and doesn't seem to worry about blending in? Don't really have anywhere to go with that observation, just thought I'd make it. |

My gripe - especially when it's only going to be 6 episodes long - is that the first episode really didn't do anything to introduce Yamamoto; she was just kind of there while Wada spazzed out. The second episode did a little better but I still wish it did more with it's limited run time.

I think it was more the burning feeling in the mouth that got to Wada and Yamamoto, something I can very easily empathize with. |

Another week, another offering of random conversations. This week things got pretty heated with the Oshi topic. Wada got a bit too intense when it was about Abel but that is par for the course I suppose. Yamamoto getting intense was a surprise since she is usually so calm (they support their Oshi in wildy different ways). The first segment reminded me of my days of trying to learn Japanese (or rather my failed attempt) and Saitou's face is still kept hidden.
Random as hell but I am sad that we are already at the halfway point. |

Yah, half the time I couldn't tell you what the conversations were about five minutes after they're over, but I still enjoy watching the interaction and following along. Very likable, fairly realistic seeming characters.

The discussion on the different ways the Kanji 乳 is pronounced is probably funnier for people who have studied Japanese and been frustrated by the fact that Kanji can have anywhere from 1 to 5 (or even more) different pronunciations (readings). Although the fact that Wada picked that particular Kanji and the words it is used in was probably funny enough.
One thing I wasn't sure of was, if people who could not read Japanese understood why Wada knelt down and started worshiping Saito after she saw what she was writing. Wada realized that Saito was her favorite Duke Abel fan-fiction writer. She previously mentioned earlier in the episode that she was really looking forward to the next release. I'm still fascinated by the complexity of Yamamoto's hairstyle. There's the fairly simple part at the front, then the transverse braid, followed by the radiating locks of hair, and then the back is split three ways so it rests on her shoulders. I was curious how the radiating locks would be even possible in real life, so I checked out some art from the manga which, not surprisingly, is more detailed, and there they look like loose curls made with a curling iron. While I've got Wada pegged as an incredibly toxic otaku, I still don't know who Yamamoto is. While her gyaru look is obviously intentional, she doesn't act like a gyaru. At all. We still know next to nothing about her and the fact that Wada doesn't actually know anything about her either almost seemed to be mocking the viewer.

Wada is indeed rather toxic as clearly shown in episode 4. Yamamoto is the rare person who can deal with her wildly swinging moods and random tangents. The episode also revealed a bit more about Yama's life such as the single mother situation. The generic Wada appearance was ironic giving that the boy/guy in question used to tease Wada for not being feminine enough (the old saying of teasing seems to fit).
I think it was also the first time the show took place outside of the food court for a bit. |
