The first episode was decent. The animation and magical effects are good enough and while the mc does not have much of a personality yet he is not annoying either. I am always in for a magic school setting so I am looking forward to that. First up is solving Tina's issue though, given the effect of her magic circle breaking I wonder if it is seal or curse related. My main worry so far is there being an annoying chibi/loli harem.

One of the frustrating things about being an anime fan is that I constantly find myself having to figure out where to draw the line in areas where I never would have thought it necessary before becoming an anime fan.
For example, this anime is pretty good, except there were little moments that had me asking a question which is I'm sure familiar with anime fans everywhere - namely, why do so many #$%^ing otherwise good anime have to flirt with the borders of skeevy moments involving age inappropriate behavior or incest? That's assuming they don't cross those borders. For example, what old male would ask a young adult male to have a young girl who appears to be somewhere between 10 and 12 sit on the young man's lap in a car that has a back seat? Why would a soon to be teacher help his young student out of the car by giving her a princess carry? Why does the author keep having a similar aged young maid keep falling into the MC's arms? Now, none of this has to be a deal breaker per se. I seriously doubt that the MC and his students will wind up in a sexual relationship - he's a Japanese anime protagonist, so there's a better than average chance that he won't wind up in any sexual relationship - but because this is an anime that pulls this kind of crap, I have to ask myself...is it worth going along for a few episodes and putting up with the irritation caused by these intermittent moments? There's an age appropriate redhead involved who seems to have some sort of charged relationship with the MC, so it's possible the anime will go the "all these students have innocent crushes and she's the real romantic interest" route. But because this is an anime, it's also possible that the redhead is just included as a beard so that some otaku pervert author can keep flirting with semi-pedo vibes, and the real relationship will develop between the academy grad and the duke's daughter who is on the cusp of adolescence. Or there may be no real relationship, and the abundance of preadolescents on the cover might indicate that this is some kind of pseudo harem comedy with chibis and lolis as Smurky said.. Past experience has taught me that when a pilot episode has this many "is this or isn't this skeevy or if it is skeevy, how skeevy is it?" moments, the phenomenon isn't going to go away. |

Episode 1
There's a reason why non-anime loving Japanese people view otaku as perverts and freaks, Edjwald. You are quite correct that the skeevy moments you identified are not going to go away because they are part of the fanservice this show is offering. Remember, fanservice can refer to a range of things. A war show that features a lot of realistic looking weaponry is designed to provide weapon fanservice. This show is designed to provide "cute"/skeevy moments involving younger girls and the MC (male otaku stand-in). I didn't mind the intro so I'll stick around for a bit. It does seem like the sort of show that I will suddenly go, "nah" with out of boredom as opposed to being skeeved out. |

I get that there is no helping it but seeing an opening in which Tina is using multiple kinds of magic detracts a little from the ''not being able to use magic'' situation. Said situation has not really progressed, Ellie is growing more skilled while Tina is still stuck (it must be something like a seal right?). Maybe the outburst of magic at the end will fix things somehow. The chibi harem thing is going to be an annoyance with jealousy already rearing its head.

It is quite the contrast to go from not being able to use any magic to far too much at once. The father suddenly wanting to prevent his daughter from going to school when she is close to being able to was a harsh decision. As for the final test... given the opening I think we all know how it will end.
I am still having fun watching but the chibi harem very much seems to be a feature. |

Ok, no surprises at the outcome, though that must've been a powerful glamour mask for Tina not to recognize her own father. Still, she blew the right side of his mask off, so why was his left cheek the one with the bandaid on it? Did he get frostbite from the remaining part of the mask?

It took a week longer than expected but with episode 5 the school arc has officially started. It made for a rather promising start with lots of new characters plus quite a few possible conflicts. The latter includes some classic anti beastfolk racism and nobles acting snooty. The opening speeches were not bad either, my only complaint is the chibi harem but it seems like Lydia and Allen are pretty much a thing already.

Episode 5
Seeing the headmaster brings up the age old question - why do anime elves have such ridiculous ears? Of course there is that moment (9:30-9:45) where the loli lovers and hebephiles will rejoice, and everyone else will feel a bit squicky. |

Dude, he couldn't have set you up if you hadn't bent down for the kiss, so that part's on you.
That said, I really wanted him to tell his mentor to do his worst. The kiss just made me |

They have to keep him tutoring at the school somehow, no matter how flimsy of an excuse it may be.

Sigh, there always has to be that one noble or royal who has a severe case of small D energy. I fear for a country that has such a prince as its future ruler, it will likely lead to a king such as seen in New Saga earlier this week. The magic lesson was fun and it strongly reminded me of Akashic Records Of Bastard Magic. The harem gags at the end... classic.

You know, I really like Allen a lot, so I get what all the girls see in him. He's very soothing. But those loli harem gags just really drag this series down for me every week. I'm even starting to warm up a little toward Lydia, who's at least age appropriate, and I can just accept that she and Allen kinda have the sort of relationship described in Joan Armatrading's "(I Love It When You) Call Me Names." Ok, not as heavy on the s/m, but Lydia sure is fond of dealing out punishments for him.
He's pecked to death but he loves the pain And he loves it when she calls him names They punish then they think up a crime It's their way of loving, not mine And then the Loli Brigade shows up and kills any good will I was feeling toward the show. I'm not a fan of harem jealousy antics in the first place, but when they're delivered in a chorus of helium voices it's nearly unbearable. |

Anyone annoyed by the chibi harem and their jealous actions is likely frothing at the mouth after this week's episode. The griffin bit was interesting but otherwise it was one long meeting of the Allan fan club and there was even the harem mandatory small versus big breast battle. |

::frothing at the mouth::
Even Lydia's hard-won good will from last week was shot to hell this week with her tsuntsun crap. At least the gryphon chicks were cute. |
