I was a little taken off guard when Crunchyroll pulled one of it's last minute schedule changes and premiered this anime today, and even more taken off guard by what a study in contrasts this anime was. I knew something was up when they flashed the word suicide up there in the advisory warning in white letters at the beginning of the episode, but even then, I wasn't fully prepared. The anime basically takes a cute, childishly drawn, naive alien that would usually be making pon pon sound effects and drops it in the middle of an emotionally brutal bullying situation.
It's as if somebody took Erased and spot welded it to Chi's Sweet Home. This isn't the first time I've seen something like this. Wonderegg Priority was also a strange fusion of emotionally disparate elements, and The Weakest Tamer also took a kid with an endearingly cute, almost shapeless familiar and gave the kid a brutal background in a surprisingly dangerous world, but this show is like The Weakest Tamer on crack. I'll be honest, shows about bullying aren't my favorite viewing material. I applaud this show for being original and for tackling such an emotionally charged subject, but I don't know if I'll watch more than three episodes if things don't keep curving toward the better over the next two episodes. I do appreciate that the bully's own situation wasn't over simplified though. |

I was warned beforehand that due to bullying making my blood boil the anime would likely not be one for me. Reading the comments here and elsewhere very much confirms that.

Episode 1
When I sit down to "enjoy" some entertainment, want to know the number #1 thing I have ZERO interest in watching? A child being bullied to suicide. So you can imagine my reaction to THAT scene. Jesus effing Christ. However. Having gritted my teeth through this double length episode of hell, I don't believe I am watching a soul-less exercise in misery porn. I am trusting - and that trust BETTER be justified - that at the end of the day, this will be a worthwhile and non-nihilistic experience. Clearly my heart is going to be a torn bloody mess but I *think* I won't regret sticking it out. Curse you, Japan. |

What honestly surprised me is how they actually brought up the concept of adult intervention into the mix and how it usually goes nowhere when it comes to bullying. Or worse, actively encourages or causes it.

I could kind of pick up the basic gist from look at the promotional that this was going to be a probably miserable experience, which I think that I had to kind of disassociate to not take a hit to my mental health.
I am kind of scared where the dog is fitting in. What does Marina do to the dog? I am a little curious what the name of the show means Takopi's sin is. My initial expectation was that Takopi was going to go monster mode and kill her bullies, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Other thoughts could be that just him giving the ribbon that ended badly in the first timeline, that it was a sin. And third theory I am having, probably prematurely, is maybe we will find out that he has caused Shizuka mother and Marina's father to star their affair, but I think he said that we are starting at his 3rd day on Earth. |

Oh god, DP, did you have to mention the dog? My blood ran cold when Shizuka said that she'd be okay as long as she had Chappy. My immediate thought was, "yeah, okay, Chappy's toast." Talk about your classic death flag. Seeing Shizuka hold Chappy's collar shortly before... well, you know... leads me to a certain conclusion about his fate given this is a show that doesn't seem super interested in pulling its punches.

The series is only 6 episodes long, and honestly, I was kind of happy when I found out about that because it will leave less time for stewing in misery.

Episode 2
For most of the episode, I was like, this is pretty well made but its kind of just misery porn with a creature that irritatingly goes -pi. Then the last 4 minutes changed up the context a lot. Shocking? No, but feels like what the story needed. At least has me on the hook for more. |

Episode 2
Was Marina intending to kill Shizuka in the woods? At the very least she intended serious physical harm, so Takokpi's action was justified (he likely did not realize his own strength). My guess (I have not read the manga) is the music is lying and Marina's death will not bring a happy "spring" into Shizuka's life. |

I know you're not watching, DP, but I'd say we learned the meaning of the Takopi's Original Sin title. Oops. I am not convinced that Marina is actually dead, but I'll enjoy the thought until I learn otherwise. The episode was testing my last nerve with Marina being her typical a-hole self, Shizuka being her usual defeated, passive self and Takopi being its usual utterly useless self. And then that magical moment when it beans Marina with the Magic Turn Back Time Camera. I had to laugh because I'd been sitting there, mentally fuming, saying to myself, "hey you dumb pink space octopus, why don't you just kill that Marina bitch... it would solve all of Shizuka's problems and make me very, very happy to boot!" And then it literally happened (maybe). Shizuka's happiness at Marina's (maybe) death was a sheer delight to behold.
Anyway, it's safe to say this show is not going to unfold in ways I find predictable. |

Honestly, I'd be perfectly happy if this series ended right at the end of this episode! If she wasn't mentally and physically assaulting Shizuka, I'd actually feel sorry for Marina given her family situation.

Like Blood said, I'm pretty sure the original sin just became clear.
And like Piggles said, I doubt that Marina's death will be problem free. If nothing else, Shizuka showing up with bruises all over her face the next day will probably make her an obvious suspect. I'm not sure if I want to keep going with this anime or not. Watching a pure being from the planet Happy being corrupted by humanity's gutterwash isn't exactly fun. Watching Shizuka rejoice in the death of another kid - even one acting like a total scumbag sadist - was a little disquieting too. Not saying that I don't get the emotion, and I'd understand relief, but unfiltered joy accompanied by a sprightly musical arrangement makes me wonder if Shizuka is about to embark on a quiet life of problem solving by assassinating people instead of directly standing up for herself. That said, I sure as hell hope Shizuka's dog is still alive, but that's kind of the point...what am I getting out of this anime where I've already watched one suicide and I'm worried about whether a suffering kid's beloved dog has been killed or not? Where childlike elements are infused with the worst humanity has to offer? I'm not sure. There's definite talent involved here though, but I'm going to be royally torqued off if the author doesn't have a redeeming point after all these excruciatingly hard to watch scenes. |
