I see we're talking about Sherlock Holmes (more or less), but I want to mentioned that even the OEL manga publisher, Manga Classics has also did a OEL manga version of A Study in Scarlet (and unlike other OEL manga, it's in color which makes it feel like a webtoon if you read it physically).

Other recent mystery series deserving of a nod here include The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-doji from the Spring '25 season (that it was never picked up for legal streaming is criminal) and the currently-airing Shabake; the former refutes seemingly-supernatural cases, while the latter gradually builds one.

There are many anime that there is no choice besides "that" Milky Holmes is even worse since it has many seasons a movie and ovas. Even If some were licensed it would not mean much, its a good anime (the movie being what i liked more), so, don't expect any other way to watch it all besides "that". Stella no Mahou is also good, the visuals help, all the colors makes it somewhat unique, it can be licensed, but well....its a very random anime...don't hope for much. |

A funny coincidence, as I'm currently finishing Granada Television's (live-action) Sherlock Holmes series, with Jeremy Brett as Holmes. So good. For a while, anyway. Last couple of seasons are a little weird.
I remember Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes in Lupin III Part VI. They kind of wasted the potential of that, though. |

Gosick will always be the GOAT of mystery anime and I'd say anime in general to an extent.

I'm surprised Colombo was big in japan, since I always associate detective anime to the Sherlock Holmes style of story.
Colombo usually would have the episode focused on him piecing together a case by finding clues and interrogating peoples, mostly by just asking them basic questions. They'd usually keep the conjecture for the very end. Holmes style usually mostly have the detective read a copy of the script ahead of time and then just constantly make ludicrous deduction, not bothering to eliminating any possibilities and just going straight for the correct one trough writer fiat. It always remind me of this sketch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKQOk5UlQSc But I find very few anime detective use the Colombo method. |

Undead Girl Murder Farce. I'll never forgive Crunchyroll for changing a title that didn't need localization in the first place.

GOSICK is probably my fave detective anime. I can't recall if the mysteries were amazing but I did learn that you can stop people from feeling your pulse by using a tennis ball under the arm, which meant I picked up on the twist in other detective media later on and got to impress people with my knowledge. So thank you, Victorique.

Gosick needs more recognition. One of the rare anime that made me look into reading the source material. Unfortunately, the novels have not been translated.

An interesting genre, "Detective". "Detectives" and similar police are such stock leads its tricky to delineate once you've expanded beyond the pure procedural. Pluto? Patlabor?
Well, two shows I'd certainly include that I think are often overlooked are ACCA 13 and F: The Perfect Insider (which also has an enjoyably shlock live action series, with even more ludicrous mysteries). |

Lets not forget that before UFO table made it big with the fate series, they had to dirty their hands with a futa anime. Futa koi is one of the most boring romantic comedies to come out in that decade, the main characters were junior high aged so it had a huge obstacle right here.its gimmick, be sue all the boring galge based romantic comedies had a gimmick, was that in the town where it happened all women had a twin sister. But as previously mentioned, it got a pretty crazy sequel that happens 3 years later, futakoi alternative, even the mc changed to an adult who returned to the futa town to take charge of his dad's detective agency. It was pretty fun as it added a Mistery to justify having a detective and all the female cast from the previous series returned. We even learned that out new mc is the ex bf of one of the teachers of the previous series. |
