I read the concept and thought this sounds an awful lot like The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't be Magicians. Then I looked the dates up and found out that Witch Hat Atelier was written first on the off chance that anyone wants to make a big deal out of it.

I'm not familiar with Studio Bug the way I am with studios like Mappa and Madhouse and Bones, but from the trailer, it certainly looks like no end of love has been lavished on the production of this anime, and even I've heard some buzz, social media recluse that I am.

Yeah, a lot of people are already calling it the masterpiece of the season. I am relatively sure that it will be good but high expectations can sometimes sting.

I've read the manga. I think its a good and interesting story but what really stands out is superb art. I'm sure the anime will be good but I'm not as confident of masterpiece status as even with great production a lot of the design strength seem almost built for the manga line art style. But we will see! Its got potential and seems a heartfelt adaptation.

The first episode is a testament to the idea that simple storytelling isn't simplistic storytelling - it can just mean clean without a lot of excess BS or stereotypes. Especially when the music and artwork and animation are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in giving the world a sense of texture and depth. I haven't watched episode 2 - this is a show I want to let settle while I think about it for at least a couple of hours - but the pilot lived up to the hype, and there's a lot of hype. I predict a buttload of comparisons to Frieren.

1/2:

The start is indeed simple but the second episode added a lot of details to the unique use of magic and the setting. I prefer getting details over time rather than being bombarded with tons of information in a single go. I particularly like the clash between magic being able to make the world a better place but it still needing to be feared because it can do a lot of damage too. Given the witch who gave Coco that book and wand/pen I am willing to bet that there are still remnants left of the freely casting witches of old.

The presentation is very fairytale and magical, the whole experience is.

Something they could have easily done here is keep Coco's situation secret from the other witch apprentices, I am glad they didn't do that. Other wise we have to become friends with them again after her secret is revealed. So good for that.

I know this has done before this example, but Coco's background and situation felt like Luke Skywalker. Protagonist dreams for something bigger, but lives in the middle of no where and accepts what their life situation is, until tragedy strikes.

Its good, didn't really doubt it.

I still think it looks better as a manga, theres such a natural synergy there, but its a fun story especially in what they will be covering this season.

To be fair, the manga art is among the very best there is and there is also some real creativity in regards to things such as paneling.

Yah, the rustic nobody embarking on the hero's journey is one of those archetypes Joseph Campbell talks about. From Arthur to Frodo to Coco.

Watched the second episode and it's all good.

I wonder when it comes to the English dub, so far all the mages except for Coco have a European accent, and it seems the better you are, the most of an accent you have. I wonder as she improves, will Coco develop an accent.

Speaking of, Agott's voice actress, just a few days ago became the first witch in the history of the Fire Force / Soul Eater universe, and now she is continuing the witch trend.

A lot of anime have taught me not to hate characters that have only been recently introduced but Agott will need to work hard to get off my shit list. Coco could have easily died during the test and the reason Agott gave for doing so was as selfish as can be. Not to mention that the age argument is pure bs with Coco not knowing much about magic at all.

Besides Agott being a twat the episode was magical. Some of the locations such as the underwater city make me desperately want to see everything the setting has to offer. I rarely have that feeling, Harry Potter is one of the few others to make me feel that way. Coco and her struggle with her nearly giving up several time was magical too and the location felt like peak Ghibli.

So maybe I am imagining things, but just me or it seemed Coca had a bit of an accent towards the end of the episode. Nothing obvious, but a word or two I heard something different than her normal voice. So maybe my theory is correct when it comes to this dub. Maybe by the end of the season, Coco will be as European as everyone else.

Well some characters are meant to be hated in the beginning, and they character develop before you know it you care about it. Remember Bakugo from the early days of My Hero Academia, the kind of person he was. I speak of a manga reader, so I can't speak for the anime only's that don't know what will happen, all I can say is wait and see.

All am I going to say in my opinion, Bakguo was way worse than Agott in the early days. And look how he turned out, let's see.

Agott should get in trouble, right? She initiated a test without permission, doing so at what she should be aware is a dangerous time and not ready. I thought apprentices in these sorts of stories get in big trouble, maybe even threatened to be kicked out as she is interfering with something her master has a plan for.
