The show is very well made, and the art alone (those shots of sunlight pouring through windows on distinguished looking academic property that looked both casual and intimidating at the same time) reminded me of what it was like to be a new student in college (though I assume the performing arts school in this anime is a high school). I was interested in the MC’s story, but I went along when the narrative shifted to the reluctant prince and a long flashback, and by the time it shifted to the BFF of the reluctant prince I was getting a little impatient.

I think that's because the melancholy is strong in this one, and I wasn't a 100% in the mood for that. I'm already getting a lot of melancholy this season (can you get melancholera?). Most notably on Even Replicas Can Fall in Love but even on Thursdays alone I'm getting some from Ramparts of Ice and Kirio's Fan Club though it's with a fun mix of humor in those shows. I'm also getting some from Haibara's Teenage New Game +, but it doesn't feel earned there, and I'll probably drop that one.

So we'll see. I'm definitely giving this one some time to develop because as I said, it's quality work.

Edited to fix some lines that got unevenly spaced for some reason.

I usually really like Takako Shimura, but this manga was an exception. Its clearly an adaptation made with care and I will watch it, but yeah, for myself so far I just didn't really connect with these characters in their short stories. I hope eventually they will add up to more.

Episode 3 is really a step up. A great portrait of multigenerational emotional abuse, its causes and outcomes. I guess it works because the stories are so strongly intertwined and so the format is a strength, which honestly didn't really feel the case so much in eps 1 and 2.

This show will never be a favourite for me; the braiding storytelling lets it constantly hit big emotional moments, but the lack of room to breathe reduces my investment. Its also quite an effortful watch as theres no real effort to ground you in whats happening. All of which is why its the only Shimura manga I dropped, I guess.

But when it works it works, and the subject this week was just right for the format for me.

Ep4 was ok, the fan segment was kind of cute but nothing remarkable.

Episode 5, though, another great episode! Our character of the weeks parents are in Soka Gakkai (its not named, but thats what it is) a Japanese new religious movement.

Unusually for such fare, the parents aren't painted as villainous in the least. They don't do anything wrong and are pretty considerate about their daughter having her own space, communities and even going to Awajima.

But she is softly repulsed by their belief set, and she's trying to distance herself from it and from them- and process the shame she feels about it, even as they have been supportive of her.

Its kind of an odd show that skips between ho-hum episodes and episodes that are some of the best material of the season, due to the braided format. When it hits, though, its right up there with Journal with Witch, which shouldn't surprise me from Shimura.
