Yeah, I have to admit that my biggest issue with Galaxy is that the pacing of the movie moves too fast, which is sad because I do believe that it starts pretty well actually, I really enjoyed Rosalina's introduction and her fight against Bowser, and then how Mario and Luigi met Yoshi, I particularly enjoyed Yoshi's recollection of how he ended up in Tostarena. But I do think the pacing begins to derail when all the characters go to space, at that point the moive felt more like a video game, which I don't know if should be considered as a positive in certain aspects.
There's been a lot of talk these days about kids media being too overstimulating, and while I don't think Mario Galaxy falls into the same category as other related media, it lacks a lot of moments to breathe, though there's a few of them. I did find the characters to be likable in general, particularly Bowser, I really liked his interactions with the rest of the cast, particularly with his son, and speaking about Bowser Jr., he was actually a pretty good antagonist, the fight scenes between him and the cast were pretty well done, in fact it amazes me that Illumination, out of all Western theatrical animation studios, seems to do a great job at animating fights scenes, considering that their other works are mostly focused on comedy.
The animation itself looks great, but that's the standard with the majority of the big theatrical animation companies, though I'm surprised at learning that the Galaxy apparently only had a budget of $110 million and a production time of a year and a half, while other animated films cost more and take a longer time to make.
In regards to the abundance of Easter Eggs, having read some interviews, it seems most of them were the idea of Illumination's staff, it doesn't seem like Nintendo has that much of a saying aside from approving how their characters should be portrayed, and for better or for worse it's something that many fans love, in the screening I attended there children, teens and even adults that kept pointing all of the references. Fox McCloud's inclusion felt a bit forced to me, but it feels nice that Illumination were able to include him and it seems he was one of the highlights of the movie for many people.
As far as the voice acting goes, well, I watched the Latin American Spanish dub, since subbed screening for animated kids movies are pretty rare, but all of the characters were voiced by professional dub VAs and all of them did a great job, only Fox was voiced by a celebrity, but he actually has done tons of dub work in the past, so he also did a good job as Fox.

I think like the first one the best way to experience this is in a theater with the moving chairs and wind/mist effects. It’s a fun but paper thin movie but Mario is kind of the same way.

Yeah, the narrative itself is thinner than spaghetti noodles, and it felt like the excessive cameos were their way of trying to compensate for that (To the point where a lot of characters went underused; Rosalina and the Subcon gang being the two biggest examples), but it was fun to watch, and that's all that really matters.

I'm looking forward to watching this once it's available for streaming in my region. Because this seems like a fun time, but not a "pay for a ticket and endure other moviegoers" fun time (and I kind of want to watch it with the Japanese dub).

Rosalina going underutilized in a movie called Super Mario Galaxy is maybe the dumbest path they could have taken

With this sort of pacing they might be able to make a faithful Warioware movie.

This comment just screams "stop having fun guys".
Anyway, I actually loved this movie more than I did the last one.
I thought the humor was better structured than the first one, whereas the first one wanted to take things in a slower but safer way, which I understand. This was the first mainstream undertaking of an animated Mario movie, after all.
While it was a bit disappointing to see Rosalina reduced to a more of a damsel for the rest of the movie, I thought the beginning was excellent and the twist of her and Peach being siblings with Peach having cosmic powers that she never realized she had until much later caught me off guard. It does answer as to how Peach came to the Mushroom Kingdom as a toddler and I was glad they didn't forget that part from the last one.
I'm wondering how the sequel will play that out. I'd like to see that being a little more developed since that was the most interesting part of the movie, for me at least.
Maybe, with the reveal of Daisy, they might make a Super Mario Land movie with Tatanga as the main villain and the sole cause of their separation, maybe?
I'm glad Brie Larson isn't getting any heat by the usual suspects because she never deserved any of that in the first place, though I will admit the movie did attract some of the culture war weirdos out there, I'm just gonna leave it at that.
I did love how the movie depicts Bowser and Bowser Jr.'s father/son relationship with Bowser struggling to maintain his newly supposed allegiance with Mario versus his bond with his son, only to side with his song after being impressed with how much of that galactic empire he created and the spoiler[whole flashback scene with him and Jr. was rather heartwarming]
I thought they handled Peach's more buttkicking personality better here(she actually does kick butt unlike the last movie) while at the same time depicting her relationship with Mario more closely with the games. (Yes, she does give Mario a kiss at the end so heck no to that whole "just friends" thing Nintendo was spinning)
I thought Yoshi was good fun through the whole film and found his little origin of how he got from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom pretty cute and funny. I also loved the bit about Toad's novel and felt that it fit with Mario's brand of humor perfectly.
I thought the depiction of Fox in the movie was great, although I'm a bit confused as to why people say he had more screentime than Rosalina.
Though if I'm being honest, Mr. Game and Watch's cameo appearance in the final battle got me more excited than I was with Fox.
One minor note is that there wasn't a whole lot of needledrops like the last one, which I'm surprised alot of people haven't pointed that out.
I loved the 8 bit and 16 bit scenes nearing the end of the movie, I thought that was rather creative and made me wanna make a level based on that scene where Mario and Peach were racing towards the Space Castle for Super Mario Maker 2.
I thought the scene with Wart at the space casino was pretty cool, though I do wish he could be made the main villain in a future Mario movie. I can definitely see some potential there. I thought the parts of the Baby Mario Bros. and the Lumas were cute fun, though I kinda wished they made the babies have those star superpowers like in Yoshi's Island.
One thing that did make me wonder was that how was Fox's radio able to pinpoint the signal to the radio in Rosalina's observatory when he was from a different world?
That could just be me, though.
But overall, as a die hard Mario fan I had alot more fun with this more than I did the first one, I'm glad it's doing so well at the box office. A shame it's getting savaged by critics online, like some of the comments from RT like that infamous "worse than AI" comment is just face palm inducing.
I thought it was a great movie, and I shouldn't have to apologize for saying that.
Fingers crossed for Wario in the next one(including Danny DeVito being cast).

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I saw this in theaters. But it was still mid. The plot was a bloated mess like they kept rushing to the next spot over and over. I wish it had just a little more breadth.
Also you could tell it was geared more towards kids in this one. Which isn't a problem per se. But CS Lewis once said that if your children's story only entertains children and not adults as well, then it fails as a children's story.

No one's asking you to apologize.
You can like the movie, but calling out someone else's comment or acting like they're "being too negative" is not cool. Even if it sounds pretentious, as long as they're not harassing anybody then they should be free to express their opinions.

That I know but the Mario games have never been known for their depth or complex storytelling even the RPG titles are pretty shallow and simple minded. Expecting an adaptation to improve upon the material as Nintendo still writes these games to be as they always been (and still have no fully voiced dialog post Super Mario Sunshine) is fruitless.

Yeah, I'm struggling to think of a Mario game with actual good 'story' and 'characters'. Even people who hype up Geno as the most request Smash Bros character don't cite a deep, complex backstory for him they just think he looks cool. Mario doesn't even talk in any of the RPGs he just emotes and makes funny noises. Complex narrative has never been a thing. Even in SMRPG two of the most memorable moments is when you see cameos of Link and Samus which were just 'jangling keys' to to speak. The last thing I want is for people to see that "Focus, M" joke video and take it seriously and think Mario genuinely needs to have a complex characters and deep lore/story. Mario movies should just be him having fun and going on zany adventures and I felt both movies delivered even if I agree with some criticisms like there not being enough Rosalina and maybe they shoved in a few too many cameos.
