This release is so dumb! I thought Netflix is st*pid because they are a American/Western company that do not understand how anime should be airingand released but for ABEMA? And for CR, I'll just assume that this is part of the licence is to release the mini episodes the same time as ABEMA Premium bcease they are considered as a "premium subscription service". This just killed the hype once a proper 1 episode per week starts airing from July.

I'll hold on to this until the traditional weekly episodes starts. It just sucks that for a couple of years now, some of my most anticipated series either have production issues or the animation is sh!t and/or something like this where the release schedule sucks!

Each episode is 10 minutes long and together they present episodes 1-6 of the anime in "chronological order."

This is somewhat surprising considering that anime onlies will have to wait until the seventh episode airs to continue the story.

This is a bizarre release plan. I've never been a fan of dumping a series all at once as it can make it go under the radar very easily and get forgotten very quickly (ReLife had that problem back in 2016), but this is worse. Yes, it is still going to have a normal release schedule in July, but those who are most excited for this adaptation are going to watch them right away and then have to wait two and a half months for new episodes. Then on top of that they chop them up into 10-minute half-episodes to confuse things.
A shame, as I adore this manga. Personally, I would have just released episode one like this.

Also, I love that they felt the need to stress that these mini-episodes are in "chronological order". Are they planning on pulling a Haruhi and air them out of order in July? Lol

One thing that isn't mentioned in the article is that I believe these "mini-episodes" have different opening and ending themes than the regular full episodes will have.

F CrunchyRoll.

With everything I've been hearing about them, I'm glad I pirate my anime through torrents. Been doing so since before CR popped up.

From what I recall, ABEMA is streaming a new mini episode each day until the end of the month, and then making it free to watch. CR must have gotten permission to stream it all at once.

1. This wasn't a CR decision it was ABEMA and the production.
2. Just don't watch it.

Don't even know how your comment is related to early streaming, but I guess people got tell the world about a streaming platform that lives in their heads rent free.

I was also wondering if they were doing a Haruhi with needing to point out the chronological order part. And I share the sentiment about the multiple episode releases. For me, that tends to mean something will slide into the "when I have time" category, and keeping up with weekly stuff means that that doesn't happen frequently.

From the article, it looks like CR is doing its end of things based around what ABEMA is doing, so this seems like a permissions thing creating a wonky schedule. Unfortunately, like you said, those weird schedules can result in people losing track of a show and it under performs.

Oh I wasn't blaming CR for this, as they are just mirroring ABEMA's release schedule.

Doesn't make it any less strange though. Having half of a cour split up released early is an... interesting decision. For promotional purposes, just an early release of episode 1 would have sufficed (a bit like what they did with Demon Slayer or with Ghost in the Shell later this June).

Streaming has been around for awhile, but the current period where a lot of companies want a piece of the pie is fairly recent. Many of these companies are still trying to figure out release schedules, promotion of new content and monetization. That a company is experimenting with the release schedule is not necessarily a bad thing. While this trial may eventually be evaluated as "Well it seemed like a good idea at the time" it doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.

The standard once a week release on a specific day of the week with a length based on a standard half hour time slot with advertisements is a relic that dates all the way back to broadcast TV. It need not be set in stone. We have already seen extra long first episodes, and two episode initial releases. We will probably see other changes as the companies realize that they are not straitjacketed into the old format. Half of these companies haven't yet figured out how to make a profit. Eventually "best practices" will be figured out, currently it is the wild, wild west out there.

The very first thing I saw when news aggregates were first posting about this was confusion on whether this is just the first episodes chopped up or its own separate thing. So in addition to everything already mentioned, this also engenders a subset of people who never bother with the main broadcast because they see a 12 episode batch drop and think they need to watch that before the premier next month. So I don't know how valuable of an experiment this is when there's seemingly no upside and a bunch of things very obviously wrong about it

Didn't they already learn this during the heydays of the OVA/OAV
