I am legit dissapointed if GKids put that warning there. In a way this is more revolting than anything 4kids ever did.

I find it hard to believe that GKids would even put a disclaimer like that, especially since they put out another WWII anime movie, Giovanni's Island, and I don't remember ever hearing about that kind of disclaimer when that movie was released. Plus, GKids has released plenty of other movies, some of which are aimed squarely at adults with no censorship whatsoever (Unicorn Wars, anyone?), so I have to wonder if this disclaimer was through some third party, just present in the specific viewing Reuben saw, or the result of some rando slipping it in thinking no one would notice or pay attention. Regardless, claiming the events of WWII is "a fictional one created by a manga" not only reeks of historical denial/revisionism, but completely spits on the memory of the people who died. It's a bit like the whole "Holocaust denial" nonsense.

A generous reading is they're just doing a boilerplate disclaimer that while it is based on the real Battle of Okinawa and the Himeyuri students were real these specific characters and events might be embellished for the sake of storytelling and to not take it as "what really happened". Titanic has a similar disclaimer in it's end credits since Jack and Rose are fictional despite the Titanic being a real incident.
