I was actually getting quite interested in seeing who else had seen Midori Days and what they thought about it. Since Tony gave the go ahead I'll make the new thread myself. I'll copy Frentymons posts since I think it was a very good one and we'll see how it goes.

In an attempt to save this thread, I'll write a good opener in your stead.

I watched Midori Days (Midori no Hibi) about two years ago, and I really enjoyed the series immensely. The concept of a girl living as the right hand of the guy she has a crush on and their daily lives progressing was slightly odd at first, but after some getting used to, led to many endearing, cute, sometimes humorous, and very sweet situtations. The one thing that stands out to me about the series would definitely be the characters. I liked how the supporting characters besides the main characters Seiji (who has a reputation as a delinquent) and Midori (who mysteriously turns into Seiji's right hand) weren't just throwaways, as would be typical of a series with such a twist of events. The doll otaku (forgot his name) endeavors really made parts of the series, and Midori's interactions with him made me love Midori that much more. Seiji's classmate Takako provided an entire humorous episode which I really enjoyed, the flashback of how his sister Rin whipped him into shape was really something worth watching, and the little neighobor girl (forgot her name)'s determination is really cute. With Midori in the picture, everything becomes even more interesting, whether it turns into something competitive or whether it's just more satisfying to have Midori there watching as an idle observer.

Seiji is much more than your average harem lead. He's bold and is neither conservative nor perverted. I can entirely understand why Midori likes him, he's one of the best leads I've encountered in these types of series. Also, his delinquent background proves that he's no pushover and he's no whiny Suzaku-esque "defender of justice" either, but he does definitely have a conscience and is above most delinquents.

Midori really made the show for me. I really liked the contrast between the shyness she displays when she isn't with Seiji and her being herself when she is. Her determination and energy really make her a great character, especially when she tries really hard for Seiji. The spoiler[cosplay episode was one of my favorites, "Midori Police! Here to arrest your heart!"] I found even more cute than "Uguu!" (Ayu from Kanon). I really liked how she was able to live her dream everyday; how before she would long to even say one word to Seiji, and now she can talk to him anytime she wants.

I wasn't entirely happy with the ending spoiler[her memories being erased felt like a bit of a copout], but in some ways I'm glad they stopped there. There really can be an opportunity for spoiler[Seiji and Midori to start a new relationship, especially since Seiji didn't forget anything and will be entirely open to Midori.] The manga storyline after what the series animates got kind of silly and out of hand, so I think Mr. Tsuneo Kobayashi (who I really have come to admire because of his work on Twelve Kingdoms) picked the right parts of the series to animate.

btw I don't really like Kohta, he's too much like any other character from any other series.

Is it just me or does Seiji remind you of Ichigo from Bleach? I saw the first 2 episodes subbed at Otakon in 2005. It seemed really cute and I thought it was ok. My gf really liked it so I picked it up and we watched it. I was pleasantly surprised. It has so much cuteness in it when it's centered on Midori. The thing is it never seemed to be TOO cute. I thought the idea of Midori being on Seiji's right hand was a nice original idea. I think the length of the series worked very well too. It worked good as only a 12-13 episode series. Anymore episodes and it would've just felt like it was dragging on.
[EDIT: Fixed some quote and spoiler tags. Be careful when quoting spoiler material; copy-and-pasting directly won't preserve the tags' functions, so those have to be re-edited manually. ~Zalis]

Only two animes have bought me to tears from laughing so hard- This and Fumoffu. So absolultely hilarious. Better still, they really could've ran with that "right hand girlfriend" deal. the jokes write themselves. But they didn't. Kudos to them for that. Then of course it was warm, touching, etc.

I haven't seen the anime, but the manga is one of only about four or five titles I've given a "MASTERPIECE" rating to; it's not totally original, but it's perfect. I haven't seen the VIZ Media manga but I doubt even with their history of gross incompetence, I doubt they could damage the sheer magic of the manga.

Has the anime been licensed? How does it differ from the manga? Is it just as funny?

Midori Days is one of those animes I can watch over and over again and not tire of.

While I enjoy the story, the characters are what I like the most.

Seiji spoiler[is so much more than the typical anime delinquent who only likes to fight. To me, he seems more like a typical high school student who wants to be liked, to be loved, but whose uncanny fighting ability gets in the way of that. It scares off the other students, especially the girls, and it makes him a target for other gangs who want a piece of him, leading to more fights.]

Midori spoiler[is interesting to me because her personality is almost completely opposite as as Seiji's right hand than in "real" life. Normally, she's shy and unable to express her feelings to Seiji, but as his right hand, she's energetic (almost hyper) and constantly confessing her love. However, even in "real" life, I get the feeling some of that energy shines through once she gets to know you and opens up.]

I agree with frentymon that the side characters are all nicely developed and have interesting stories.

But, I'm going to have to disagree with frentymon in one area. I liked the ending. To me, spoiler[it showed how much Midori grew through the series. Even though her memories of her time with Seiji were gone and she seemed to be back to the same shy girl who was unable to express herself at the beginning of the series, she found the courage to confess her love to Seiji. She risked rejection and didn't know how Seiji would answer, but was rewarded by his confession of love, too. ]

Just my thoughts Very Happy

I think the ending really worked actually.
spoiler[
By having her forget her memories it's all up to Seiji to make things work now. She might remember what happened but he does. He could've decided to not stick with her and once she awoke bug out. By having her not remember it's up to Mr. Tough guy to put it all on the line this time. She poured her heart into it the first time, now it's his turn. Besides, imagine the fun of having to explain to a girl you love her because she was transformed into your right hand and you too grew on each other???? See how well that goes.]

Liked it a lot despite it's strangeness. It was funny and even at times dramatic. It also was very well animated. It's a worthy addition to my shelves of anime.

Don't underestimate Viz on this matter--I've heard from the AoD reviews that the Midori Days manga suffers from censorship, typoes, and awkward phrasing such as "Dear Seiji" in place of "Seiji-kun."

Ye gods, the same old story, is it? I've heard VIZ Media's top translators got shackled to the nigh impossible job of localizing Detective Conan, but the comapany's size and devotion to cutting cost resulted in hiring a lot of newbies that lead to the problems you cited. The same happened with TOKYOPOP, of course, but then again TKP wasn't originally known for quality anyway. My sister's Sailor Moon graphic novels by MIXX are so badly bound they can't be open anymore without destroying the volume.

It's so true!
Though I have to admit that it really short, every episode of it never misses to touch your minds and hearts.... every episode is really detailed and complete!

But I really don't why guys so love this anime? (besides the reason, they want a midori in their hand)

That would be Takamizawa's reason Wink

Really, I don't know if my reasons for liking this series are any different than a girl's.

First of all, it makes me laugh. Very hard. But even with the comedy, the series doesn't lose its dramatic edge. I think a good example of this is the spoiler[convention episode, where Takamizawa has Seiji and Midori help sell the Midori puppets. While being very funny, this episode also shows how much Seiji and Midori have come to care for each other.]

Secondly, even though the premise of the series is so outlandish, I find the characters' reactions to it very believable. spoiler[Seiji is freaked out at first but grows more and more accustomed to it as the days pass. Midori finds herself in a situation where Seiji can't get away from her, so she's free to confess her love, embroider those shirts and do all those other things because there's not much Seiji can do about it. However, as the series progresses Midori realizes what an impractical solution being Seiji's right hand is and wishes the situation to return to normal.]

The only area where guys might like the series better than girls is the fanservice. But while it added to the comedy, I think the series would be just as enjoyable to me without it.

Again, just my thoughts. Very Happy

Despite a couple of really weak episodes (6 and 7, IIRC), the series as a whole worked for me, and I loved the ending. So few anime romantic comedies know how to end right, but this is one that does. Great English VA work in the lead roles and funny alternate dialogue outtakes don't hurt.

For a more complete opinion, see here (for vol. 1) and here (for vol. 2) and here (for vol. 3).

The first time I heard about Midori Days was my friend telling me about it. Unfourtunately all she seemed to know was that 'The guy's hand wants to be his girlfriend.' and was trying to convince me that it was some sort or sick, twisted show.

Thank God I know better now, it is one of the sweetest animes I've seen to date and I'm sure that if my friend ever dares to go near it (I'm trying to get her to watch it.) that she'll agree with me.

I really liked Midori Days because it was funny, had a unique plot (well, a unique twist, anyway), and provided lots of character development. AND it's one of the instances where the sub and the dub are both done very well. It still makes me laugh to think about Seiji's friend Miyahara, working the buttons on a crane game, saying "It takes a veeeerrry steady hand!" -- yay for old Operation references! In the dub, at least. The outtakes were funny too; you gotta love hearing Midori-chan's cute voice...swearing like a sailor. Laughing Overall, though, it's a sweet and funny story.

I saw this series only just last week, & aside from the obvious lewd jokes about a boy & his right hand, I found this series to be incredibly heartwarming & hilariously funny. Seiji came across as an extremely likeable character despite his 'Mad Dog' tough guy persona, & Midori's affection for him was both funny & touching, especially when Seiji was lamenting the fact that he couldn't get a girlfriend & Midori spoiler[realising that Seiji would only ever see her as his right hand if things stayed the way they were.] The dynamic between the two characters was very well played out IMO, & made for a very enjoyable little series.
