Not a normal reader of The Mike Toole Show, but this was really good stuff. Your happenstance across Dunbine Vol. 12? I know at least one or two people who would rage at this story. The sheer amount of luck needed to accomplish that...
I was going to say my white whale was Figure 17, but I just saw TRSI put it in their bargain bin, all the singles, for 30 bucks, so I just found my own bit of luck it seems ![]() I guess next would be... actually, no. I don't have a white whale anymore. End of Eva, Magical Project S, 5 cm/s (ADV release), CCS... yeah, I'm doing good right now. Word to the wise, if it's a series you want, don't hesitate to buy. The market is far too volatile to let anything sit. When the last volume gets the release date, that's the deadline to buy. You do not know if the chance will ever come again. |

Thanks for the interesting article Mike, although it was kinda depressing.
I wish I had enough money to buy everything that comes out since that would save me a lot of time and frustration when I try to complete sets later on and since I'm kind of a completionist, sometimes I will rather ignore the series if I can't get the whole set. Hopefully, someone will some re-release My Youth in Arcadia and I won't have to spend almost 200 bucks in it. ![]() |

I guess I'm lucky to have all four volumes of Hellsing Ultimate. So Funi's just waiting on the materials? Why didn't they just say so instead of keeping us in the dark all this time! I've been waiting four years for the continuation of this series; needless to say, I'm very impatient!
![]() I thought I heard that they might start releasing it later on this year, but I'll believe it when I see it. If they don't release it soon, I'll be $50 richer next year. (I made a bet with my husband.) As for hard-to-find anime, I have Jin-Roh and Key the Metal Idol. I have yet to watch Key, though. Also I recently bought Descendants of Darkness at a used book/dvd/video game store. |

Not really looking for anything super-rare at the moment, but I remember my search for the last boxset for Maison Ikkoku. Hooo man was that a doozy. Make it rain is right. I eventually had to break down and drop 120 bucks on E-Bay for it.
Luckily I finished my Urusei Yatsura collection back when AnimEigo had their first big website blowout sale for it back in 2006, and I picked up KOR from their booth at Otakon in 2005. I suppose the only thing I'm actively searching for is Video Girl Ai, but thats relatively easy to find online and isn't too expensive, but the hunt through stores and cons is much more fun. EDIT: Though I wouldn't mind picking up Overman King Gainer as well. Idly, the same is happening for PS2 RPGs. Now that PS2 games are getting pulled from GameStops, it's harder to rare game hunt (Only... 9 to go before I have what I'd consider a complete collection). They're usually easy to find on E-Bay, but again, where's the fun in that? Last edited by Hunter Sopko on Sun Aug 28, 2011 2:18 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Man, is that mean the K-ON! BD-DVDs will suffer the same fate in the next year or so?

Hm. This show is fresh on my mind at the moment, so I remember searching the dealer room at every con I attended for copies of FLCL from 2006 to the day I heard Funimation was re-releasing it. So that was the one I always asked people about, periodically checked Amazon and Ebay for, etc. Could never find a disc for less than $35 at the lowest, and for two episodes, that wasn't worth it to me. Particularly when that was the FIRST disc, and the second was gonna be twice that amount. Anyway, Funi's re-release saved me any heartache there, and the same happened with Utena this year, which I had every volume of, but CPM's DVDs were nearly unwatchable in quality, like VHS rips...and hardsubbed during duels.
![]() I don't agonize over hard-to-find releases as much, because I usually limit my pocketbook to the well-known cream of the crop stuff, and prefer boxsets to singles, to the point of replacing my singles sets whenever I get the opportunity. (Saves space, harder to lose 'em.) I guess I don't have a true collector's mentality there. ![]() Right now I'm trying to find a cheap-ish copy of vol. 5 of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. It shouldn't be OOP by any means, but something weird happened in this case. Due to rights expiring on the BECK name, (yeah, that *other* musician has apparently copyrighted his name... ^^; ) the show has been pulled from shelves, so the complete box went from being everywhere to nowhere like lightning, and the singles are only available used, in limited quantity. It'll be re-released someday as "Mongolian Chop Squad" apparently, but that's gonna take a lotta re-authoring and re-packaging, so yeah, I'm glad to have that original run. EDIT: Well, if we're bragging about rare things we have...hm. What *do* I have? I have ADV's release of 5 cm per second, but the movie itself isn't rare anymore, as Bandai re-released it in April. I guess the original *dub* is rare, though. I'll have to buy Bandai's release to compare them. :3 I also have Great Teacher Onizuka boxsets, which I love dearly. (Proooobably my favorite anime comedy, although it's hard to narrow that down.) The enormous t-shirt that came with 'em works well as a pool coverup. ![]() Last edited by JacobC on Sun Aug 28, 2011 2:43 pm; edited 3 times in total |

Birdy the Mighty (OVA) volume 2. I got the first volume when it first came out on DVD, and being impatient, I went and got the second volume on VHS. After it came out on DVD, I kept saying to myself, "Oh, I'll get around to buying it eventually"...and obviously yeah, that never happened. The version in the Kawajiri pack (along with Demon City Shinjuku and A Wind Named Amnesia) was easier to find for a while, but being distracted by other things I never jumped on it.
I mean, at least I have it in SOME form, but still! It makes me so sad King Gainer has become scarce, even the once cheap brick from years ago. It always got a good reaction when I showed it off, and it's too bad I can't tell people they can just run out there and get it. |

I can definitely relate trying to find a dvd of a series at a very cheap price. I prefer thin boxsets since they save space, I only consider individual discs if the boxsets don't exist. Some of series I'm looking for are:
Zoids Chaotic Century vol 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8,11 Volume 5 is definitely the hardest to find cheap (I was lucky to find vol 7 for 99 cents at the 99 Cent Only store) Project Arms - End of the First (Vol. 9) (I refuse to pay $14 for two eps on a disc) Ronin Warriors - Complete Collection (Books 1 and 2) (no way I can afford $349.50 ) Android Kikaider - The Animation Perfect Collection Yugioh (the entire series) Paradise Kiss Baki the Grappler: Season 1 and 2 Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Two (seriously, the others are available, what is up with box two) Ranma 1/2: OVA Series Box Set Dice: Season 2 Complete Collection SD Gundam Force - Last Hope for Victory (Vol .9) Zatch Bell movie 1 ( does anybody know if it was ever released) http://www.rightstuf.com/ Sailor Moon boxsets R.O.D.: The Complete Monkey Magic Macross: Complete Collection Dragon Ball Z: Coolers Revenge / The Return of Cooler (Double Feature) (Steelbook Packaging) It's not just anime, I had this problem with manga. I remember searching high and low for vol 9 of Cyborg 009. The prices were always high on Amazon.com. I was lucky to get vol 10 for $9 at Kinokuniya. I finally acquired vol 9 for just $1.30 at Amazon.com from a seller. I had to do a wait and see game to see if a seller would put that volume at a cheap price. My waiting paid off. I just recently ran into this issue myself, having scored most the ADV singles of Pani Poni Dash cheap from TRSI's bargin bin...save for Volume 4, which apparently barely exists on the market any more. Not even the secondhand sites are all that helpful.
Edit: If we're talking about the OOP/rare stuff we have, I have the 2nd Tokyopop boxset for GTO (v. 5-10). That was a great deal - found it marked "used" but otherwise intact (shrinkwrap, T-shirt and all) at a local FYE for $20. I also recently found the Scrapped Princess brick at that same FYE for less than $30, and I didn't know that was OOP until I looked it up on here. I got the Paradise Kiss and Black Lagoon bricks at a local con this summer for basically MSRP, but now even that would be a bargin for them. I made a mistake picking up Megazone Part 1 in the 99cent Store, because now I am force to hunt down Part 2!!!
But the most trouble I have is with out of print manga, I am out searching for Skull Man, Cyborg009, along with other titles. Not only that, I was planning on buying a new copy of GOTH: A Novel Of Horror (ever since I let my friend borrow it, and returned it to me in a bad condition!!) and now the price on this light novel is stupid, all thanks to Stud Levy for pulling the plug on Tokyopop!! |

The first anime I bought, Geneon's excellent Haibane Renmei, I picked up the artbox and all four DVDs for $80. Now the four DVDs alone sell for $250. I am quite happy that I obtained all six volumes of Vampire Princess Miyu (as well as the two OVAs) for not too much money. I have all four volumes of Hellsing Ultimate already, and I have both season of Black Lagoon in the nice metal cases. I picked up the first volume of the bisexual vampire show Nightwalker, but I can't seem to find the second for any reasonable price (I'm okay with this, thought, because the first volume has the best episodes on it anyway). A few months ago I picked up ADV's Diamond Daydreams boxset for cheap, and I was quite delighted by it. And while everyone is talking about the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs being re-released, I would like to point out I bought the second-to-last copy of Samurai X boxset that Amazon had.
As for things I am searching for, the Holy Grail is the Shamanic Princess DVD. I love this freaking show beyond reason, and I have a pirated DVD rip of it, so I know it exists, but I can't find any evidence of it anywhere apart from blurbs like this. I have seen both Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran and Maze on the Ebays, but they were over $100 and I am leery of dropping that much on a site infested with bootlegs (I did pick the Maze OVA up for cheap, though). And would like the super-ecchi CLAMP yuri show Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, which has a actual, honest-to-god review on this site, but it seems to have dropped of the face of the earth as well.
What are you talking about? There was no such show called Galaxy Angel Rune. I refuse to acknowledge it's existence! Galaxy Angel X was the last and final series of that franchise! Lalala I can't hear you! |

Tell me about it. You like the Midori Days manga? Well, good freakin' luck finding Volumes 2 and 3 at a reasonable price. Same goes for Emma past Volume 4, or the full run of Challengers, or Petshop of Horrors, or the later volumes of Tokyo Babylon... I'm totally not bitter about it! 8D *eyetwitch* |

Now I'm all curious as to what becomes impossible to find when I'm not looking. (Which admittedly, is pretty often. I'm late to the party on a lot of things.)
Not sure why you'd want to, but a quick amazon search reveals you might have trouble getting Fushigi Yuugi together for instance. I faced this peril myself, eventually getting a copy for 20 bucks, but Paranoia Agent is no peach to complete. . . . Oh man, my professor still has my copies. ![]() ![]() Someone mentioned Haibane Renmei. Yeah. I got lucky there too, found a used copy at FYE by happenstance. I'ma keep an eye on this thread for stuff that's disappearing. o_o; |
