IMHO, they're not manga. They're just American-made comics heavily inspired by Japanese art and culture.

Hell take a American comic IE SpiderMan to japan and ask a guy on the street what it is and he will answer Manga.
course same holds true with anime and taking a Disney flick to japan and asking is it anime or not. We just use manga as a term to describe were it comes from same with Anime. Guess I better get my Nomex made internet posting suit on since Im probly going to get flamed for this. |

Yes, manga is just the Japanaese word for "comics." Go to Japan, show someone X-men, and they will reply that it's "manga." :]
But I guess in our terms... I.e., how we Westerners think og manga, then no, American-made comics are not manga, they're "manga-inspired comics." |

Since most Americans use the term Manga to describe Japanese comics I guess you could say that this American Manga is not really manga, but I prefer to use the term manga as a way to describe a form of comics more then where a comic comes from because these American Manga artists have much more in common style wise with Japanese Manga ka then American writers. Most people need to broaden their definition of manga, if you ask me.

ICv2 has this article up where they talk to Tokyopop Director of Editorial Jeremy Ross and Vice President of Sales and Marketing Steve Kleckner about this very question ("What IS manga?") in light of Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga.

I'm curious how many more of these type of anthologies magazines the North American market will support.

Japanese also use the word "komikku". I think the word komikku is used more than manga in Japan.

American comics usually go by the name 'Amicomi'. Last time I was in Shibuya, I saw a relatively small comic specialty store, it was ran by either Mandarake or Manga no Mori... not sure which one. That was the only comic outlet I've seen at all.

American manga-inspired comics are just normal comics with Japanese influenced art really. So they're good, but it depends on your opinions of art and story. :/

When someone says "manga" I think japanese art styles to depict a story. So if someone in America released a comic with a japanese artistic influece, it's manga to me.
I have read one issue of AmeriManga which is released by IC Entertainment. All of it is japanese influenced, Some of it great, some bad, some OK. It ranges, just like "actual" manga. AmeriManga has several different stories by several different artists, including ONE entry of Warmth by good ol' Freddy G. |

Making a manga is no different than making a regular comic book because they are the same thing. The only difference here is where they are made. Manga are made in Japan, Manwha are made in Korea.
It all comes down to who is creating the comic book itself, not where its made that decides whether or not certain people are gonna like it. |
