Well I just got and my BD and watched the whole thing in two days and I don't really know what to say.
Other than just about perfect. They did it right. It doesn't try to be the greatest anime ever made, which is good because it isn't. When I say it is perfect it is because it is perfect for what it was intended to be -- the ongoing story for Haruhi fans. I don't want to write too much about it because I don't want to spoil it for anyone else. And I appreciate it how spoilers from people who could have written them years ago seem to have been kept under wraps. Finally, I do not give the slightest damn about what Aya Hirano does off-mike and who she does it with. All the more power to her and she is welcome in my living room any time. [EDIT: Changed your thread title since it's more so an opinion of the anime rather than any kind of technical analysis of the video quality, audio encoding, or depth of special features on the Blu-ray disc itself like I had been misled to believe. -TK] |

Oh, so it's out now? It's been over a year now since I first heard of
it. Did you notice how much the regular dvd cost? |

I thought that it was a bit drawn out in places, like the finale could have lost at least 20 minutes, but it is a solid Haruhi addition.

Note to web-based business owners -- here is a data point for you. I happened to notice the full-width banner ad that ran for two days at the top of ANN's main pages. Then the above participant that didn't. Another data point -- the ad was run by Right Stuff, but Amazon had the same package at the same time for about $2 less. Amazon has the DVD for 21.49 US. The blu-ray plus DVD is 34.99 US which is what I recommend. The background art has a lot of 3D supplement to it and is all first-rate. The character art is all carefully 2D and very consistent with what the series has been so far, but very clean and appealing. The HDTV version is definitely a better experience. In any case it is all quite impressive for a series that has been written off by many as "has been." |

Shoot, I missed the banner! I haven't been on this particular site
for a month or so, but you'd think I would seen an advertisement for it on amazon.com. Well, thanks for the information. |

I got the normal DVD at Best Buy for $19.99.
Have not spotted it at Fry's (in store). It is an excellent movie! |

I really loved the movie, I thought it was perfect and the exact next installment of the Haruhi story I was looking for. I honestly can't say anything bad about it, I just loved it.

So, where do you think the series is going from here?

There are obviously many directions the story can take, and then there is the interesting question as to IF they are going to take it anywhere. The franchise seems quite successful but that isn't always an indication that they are going to continue it. I think the forum owners prefer not to have a bunch of news-free speculation type threads so perhaps we should leave it at that. I for one have no interest in the flood of fan fiction that is no doubt lying around. If there is news it will be in the encyclopedia entry. |

Well, I finally got around to buying the movie the other day and I have
to say, I absolutely loved it. I disagree with the fans who say it should have been cut because the nearly 3 hours of running time is a feature all in itself. To tell you the truth, I'm amazed that it never got even a little boring during all that time. The animation is incredible, the characters move like real people with all sorts of well-thought out scenes that make use of that fact on an emotional level. It's nice when a two hour movie has a couple of truly memorable scenes, it's great when a 3 hour movie has at least five that I can think of. I wish all anime was made with this much love. |

If you're talking about the show in general, could've fooled me. I watched the whole first season and personally found it kinda pretentious. |

Just out of curiosity, what exactly triggers the assessment of "pretentious" for you when watching an anime? Pretentiousness is the mainstay anime attribute in my view. And it is a feature, not a bug. Not all of them have it, but many good ones do. |

It's nice to know the movie isn't the first 10 minutes, repeated 8 times, to fill it.
I'll get this... eventually. I liked the series, but am definitely no hard core fan of it. Hell, I haven't even seen the second season yet. Too busy watching it's spin-off ( |

I've seen the movie and I think it's great, specially if you liked the first season of Haruhi (although, it wouldn't be necessary to watch it to understand the film).
It's a very heart-warming tale with solid production values. And I didn't think it was that long. Sure, the start is a bit slow, but after all, most Haruhi stories have a slow beginning.
That's a pretty good one! It plays more like an extended regular episode than a film, well, I'm stating the obvious since it's an OVA |
