My friend's anime collection consist of burned DVDs and he said that the guy who burned him most of them said he couldn't burn the Trigun series. I said that sucked and he said it was only 3 discs...

Brings me to my point I told him he was full of crap and that there is no way all 26 episodes were on 3 discs. He claims that they were not bootleg but I still think it's crap. I didn't see the DVDs in person but now I'm doubting myself and I wonder if there is a 3 disc set with all the eps.

I know Trigun has been released on 8 DVD volumes and are available in regular and Geneon Signature edition, there is an 8 DVD box set, and currently they are releasing a limited tin collection available in two seperate volumes. Is there something I'm missing?

Fitting 26 episodes on three or four discs is pretty much par for the course for bootleggers. And considering the only Geneon releases of the series were the original eight disc run and the recent re-release via two metal boxes, odds are about 99% that a bootleg is exactly what your friend has.

I'm confident enough to say it's 100% bootleg. You should look at the "Identifying Bootlegs" thread in the retail forum.

Just want to add,
A good friend of mine who owns an Anime shop in Melbourne, Australia and sells these DVDS and i asked him befor are they bootleg. He said no they are lincesed to china where he importes them from and leagily they are fine here and has not been in trouble from AVD or Madman. But they dont have any extras and only has 1 or 2 sound tracks and 1 set of subs. They play funny on some region DVD player and are hard to play on computers or burn (which I haven't tried). But this is how i can afford to watch anime plus sevral shops in my city sells them. I see no problem...

(They are also found on ebay)

Unless your friend is importing from a *very* small selection of Chinese DVD companies (and those DVDs would typically either have a Chinese dub or subtitle track), your friend is reselling bootlegs.

For instance, here's a legit (or at least "mostly legit") Singapore company:
http://www.odex.com.sg/

They sell some VCDs, but even their VCD sets cost more (S$30, or about US$18) and have fewer episodes (12eps) than bootlegged DVD sets (CDs are the cheaper medium, BTW). Why? Because they pay royalties to the Japanese companies.

I've got the 3-disc "Trigun". I think it's from Singapore; but it has both the English & Japanese dubs. It's good quality, too. If it's a bootleg, then these people did a great job. Plus I only paid $30 instead of $200 for Geneon's bulky box set.

It's not legit...but it's a matter of personal taste. Myself, I download fansubs and burn entire series to single DVD-5s. I'm fine without the extras...but yes, it's possible for entire series to be fit onto 3 disks, though the quality often suffers...unless they're fansubs on data DVDs, like what I use.

Cookie, why do you say "mostly legit"? Has Odex put out titles they didn't license?

Of course that's bootleg. Not sure why you're proud of yourself though Rolling Eyes .

Yea, you are getting ripped off with bootlegs. A bootleg disk usually sells for under a dollar. So you bought something with an 1000% markup, and not contributing to the anime industry in Japan. Thats what we call leechers.

I can't remember if it was Odex, but I know that some R3 companies have licensed the shows but have then ripped the content from other region DVDs rather than authoring themselves (or something along those lines).

Well I think they are proud because they payed a whole lot less for the same 26 episodes, although Trigun box set is $200 MSRP but I've seen it as cheap as $80. Personally I sometimes burn DVDs too but thats only when it's a crappy series a friend lets me borrow but series that I really like, I buy them. I burned a certain Platinum collection because I was pissed that I payed more for the so called "Perfect Collection" like 4 years ago so a friend let me borrow it and I burned all 6 DVDs and I was proud I didn't spend any more money.

I think people who buy bootlegs don't get the full lexperience. For example Samurai Champloo sounds a whole lot better on a widescreen TV with 5.1 surround which is something most bootleg editions don't support unless they are burned on dual layered DVDs which I doubt bootleggers would go that extra mile.

I just did some maths there, and you will be missing out on a quality product.

From time to time, I author DVD on my home computer. With the normal DVD Media, I find that I am normally get about 5 episodes of anime onto a disk. I could put more, but the quality goes down rather noticabily.

Full TV series on 3 DVDs.
You would be missing out on Picture and Sound Quality.
Any best there you got japanese dialogue only.
Subtitles.... if they are in english, they would be very shotty. Eg. Bad spelling, Names of characters changing from episode to episode. Out of synce sound.
Out of synce sound and subtitles.

And the list goes on.

Over all, it an inferiour product.

Mind you, I am some time not happy with the Western Distribution of anime. Eg. ADVision 2 Episodes per disk with Gantz made me think "FU, I will keep my fan subs"
Thankfully the local australian release did not suffer this problem.

Over all, I have been burnt one too many times with China Town boot legs that I know don't even bother looking at them at more.

You do know what you're doing is totally illegal right? Or you just don't care because you won't get caught by ADV or other R1 companies?

Either way, it's not something to brag about... it's like a lowlife criminal bragging about how much money he stole from the bank or who he raped.

You feel like someone did a poor job and then you decide you gonna take their stuff for free because it's your right as a fan? Rolling Eyes

I didn't mind the Gantz 2 Episodes release actually made me get more into the series because I kinda have a short attention span... I feel bored when I watch more than 3 episodes of ANY series but I can watch a whole movie for some reason. Not only that I picked up each volume of Gantz for $9.99 which technically was cheaper for 2 volumes, 4 episodes, than only 1 DVD with 3 episodes. Volume 6 had 3 episodes, for only $9.99, and the new series with "more" episodes, just like you wanted, the cheapest I have seen them is $19.99. I don'tthink that extra $10 is worth one extra episode.

In the end I still believe that 3 disc set was bootleg and more than likely did suffer in quality but I don't realize why my friend said that he couldn't burn it, he has no problem burning legit releases.
