I scanned a copy of the article:

The main discussion has taken place on DarkMirage's blog (www.DarkMirage.com):

All I can say is, DIE ODEX. Lolz.

Most of us Singaporean fans will support American licensed DVDs until ODEX wakes up from its dream and faces the reality of the internet.

Are they cracking down on Fansubs or people copying Licensed DVD's onto the internet.

Fansubs are what make me buy the show.. But illegal copies of stuff that been release in certain language is bad.

I hope it's not about fansubs.

Ha. Don't be fooled, people.

Although Odex is the largest licensor and distributor of anime in Singapore

Yeah yeah. They're the only one whose products stores stock regularly, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did some arm-wrenching in the background.

the company has seen a sharp drop in sales in recent years.

Subs generally suck, dubs always suck (unless it's an American dub, in which case it varies), video quality sucks (no different from TV ripped anime), no extras. You do the math.

The company has cited internet file-sharing as a major cause of the drop in sales.

More like Singaporean fans generally wising up to what's quality and what's not, and then refusing to spend money on rubbish.

This is a "BUY MY PRODUCT OR DUN WATCH ANIME AT ALL , OR ELSE..." .
Everyone in Singapore and maybe beyond knows the quality of Odex's products, that contributes to pple defering to fansubs however that is not the main reason, the main reason is odex's marketing and publicity campaign is NON-EXISTENT. Maybe by sueing all the anime pple in Singapore they can earn back they loses.Fansubs are advertisements for japan anime, fans would still want to buy the official version, at least i would. However that is IF, and its a big IF, the official version in your region is of a decent standard. To entice fans to buy the official version extras can be bundled with the vcd/dvds like character data profiles, posters etc... Anyway this is the dark age in Singapore's anime scene. All i can say now is GOOD GAME to both anime fans and odex.

ODEX DVDs are so terrible that no one would bother putting up their version of the DVDs on the net.

I must say that's quite a bit of FUD in this matter, they purport to represent the copyright interests of a large number of anime studios in Japan:

http://avpas.com.sg/AVPAS_Member.html

However, from the letter that was scanned by dKiWi, it would appear that they are so far only going after people who have been downloading fansubs of the titles which are being distributed by ODEX in Singapore at the moment:

I do agree that Odex is creating a lot of negative impression for itself from anime fans here in Singapore, and that some people are even boycotting them for their actions.

Personally, I would buy from them if, and only if, the animes are in high-quality DVDs, but so far, all I've seen are lousy VCDs with not-so-good translations and video quality. If they can't surpass online downloads, I doubt the anime fans would actually pay for what they deem as inferior goods. In this, I'll say fans aren't to be blamed for everything.

Edit:
Oh yes, I forgot to mention that true, there's not much marketing from what I see, and I don't even have an idea of what exactly they've licensed. Their website is down too, great..

i guess it can go both ways....as long as the companies are being supported in some way (either by buying the originals, or by making available alternative versions of pre-existing series & spreading its popularity that way), no one should have as serious of an issue with it as this singapore company.

i can't cite specific examples of the following, but i know of companies, on different entertainment mediums (video, music, etc) who have embraced what the Net has made available to all of us without alienating everyone who has ever fileshared, or sees "unofficial" content. they take something like bittorrent and instead of going after people who use it, they use that same tool to promote their own anime/music offerings.

Why don't people at Odex spend their time and money on fighting against blatant pirated DVD instead of downloaders? Maybe they should open a class for Singaporean government officials on how to tell authentic and bootlegged products apart. Cool

I am surprised - most of the Anime DVDs from Singapore I have purchased have been of excellent quality, usually equal to or surpassing those I can get here in the US. I probably dont have any from this company though.

I'm not sure, but there is a big probability that the HQ DVD's you got from Singapore are bootlegs. The bootlegs in Singapore are of very high quality

isnt it ironic that the bootlegs are of superior quality to the licensed product??

reasons why ODEX has incurred the wrath of many singaporean fans...

1) Sucky subs... seriously guys, have you seen their Gundam Seed subs?? they speeled ORB as AUBE... Athrun underwent multiple name changes (like Asuran) and many of their subs were wrongly translated...

2) bad quality video... i bought Hellsing VCD's and i thought that i was the happiest man on earth... i switched on the first episode and i saw pixels as hueg as an XBOX... crap, i really wanted to kill someone that day...

3) no quality control... regards to my Hellsing boxset, one of the later episodes, there were no japanese dubs... only english.. wtf??

4) bad dubs... i want dubs the quality of American ones!! not some lame ass half cooked newb actor with no resume of acting experience...

5) vcds.... come on ODEX, its teh times of HD and BluRay... and you're only just coming to DVD boxsets??

6) price... hell, if the American companies can release their products here, it would hell be the same price as ODEX or just abit more expensive... but American ones are in DVD, have extra's, quality dubs, good boxsets etc...

7) extra's??... where are the extras ODEX?? what? people dont want extra's you say?? more like you cant afford them ODEX...

8) boxsets... what kinda lame ass company uses those kinda boxsets anyway?? oh i remember, ODEX...

9) ODEX leads the anti-fansub campaign... now they destroyed their only way of marketing... yay

10) they dont even bother to be better... Chuang Yi opened a forum to get comments from consumers... what did ODEX do?? hmm... maybe a website that was never updated??
